After 50, the most natural-looking brows usually come from making the hairs you still have visible, then adding definition only where it is missing. Brush through pale or grey hairs, groom before plucking, choose a shade that suits your natural colouring, and use light, hair-like strokes rather than filling the whole brow heavily.
Start by revealing the brows you have
Brow hairs can become finer or wirier, and the tail may look less dense. Some hairs also turn grey or white, or become so pale that they blend into the skin. Before assuming a brow has disappeared, brush through it: tinted brow mascara can make light hairs easier to see while adding colour and definition.

Kim O’Sullivan, the brow artist quoted in Sally Foran’s Irish Examiner article published 1 October 2026, puts the order simply: “optimise first, fill second.” Groom and assess the natural shape before reaching for a pencil or removing hairs.
Choose a shape that suits your face
Face-shape suggestions can be a starting point, not a set of rules. The aim is a balanced outline that works with your features and existing brow growth.

- Round face: An angled brow may emphasize the cheekbones and jawline.
- Long face: A brow that extends past the eye can help balance the face.
- Heart-shaped face: A natural-looking shape is suggested.
For a more defined edge, concealer around the brow can sharpen its outline without requiring a heavier fill.
Pick a colour that looks harmonious
Choose a brow shade that complements your natural brow colour rather than automatically matching the darkest hairs or using a stark, dark tone. If your head hair has turned grey or salt-and-pepper while your brows remain dark, softer taupe, ash or cool-neutral shades may look more balanced. Slight tonal variation can keep the result dimensional rather than flat.

Use makeup to define, not redraw
Pencils and powders can create the impression of fullness, while tinted brow mascara can reveal pale hairs and add colour. For sparse areas, fill only the genuine gaps with fine, light strokes that follow the direction of the hairs. A three-pronged brow pen called Brow Boost is O’Sullivan’s example of a tool designed for hair-like strokes; she recommends using very light pressure.
O’Sullivan says she developed Hero Tinted Brow Mascara with the intention that it tint, tone and condition brows. That is her stated product intention, not an independent performance assessment. The article offers product examples, not comparative testing.

Groom before removing wiry or grey hairs
When density is limited, plucking a grey or wiry hair can leave a more noticeable gap. Brush and groom first, then consider toning the hair before deciding whether to remove it. Avoid treating every unruly hair as one that must be plucked.
Compare professional treatments by the result you want
Threading, tinting, lamination and microblading do different things. The Irish Examiner feature describes their intended effects but does not provide independent comparisons of safety, durability or effectiveness.
