Robby Cuthbert’s tensegrity furniture uses wooden members and tensioned steel cable to make structure part of the visual design. His portfolio includes tables and chairs alongside lamps and sculptural works; each piece has its own listed materials and form. The Tense Coffee Table offers the clearest documented example of how he shaped and assembled the wood-and-cable structure.
What makes Cuthbert’s furniture tensegrity-inspired?
Cuthbert describes his work through the relationship between wood and wire, with opposing forces creating the finished arrangement. In the Tense Coffee Table, steel cables run between curved wooden components: some cable lines pull the pieces together while others pull them apart. Cuthbert says the result is stable, but that is his account of the design principle—not an independent engineering certification or a published load rating. That push-and-pull relationship also shapes the work’s appearance. The cable is not simply hidden hardware: it is visible as part of the composition, while the separated wood members suggest a structure held in balance. Cuthbert has described his recent work as exploring tension and the storing and release of energy, often through architectural or organic forms with a fantastical or whimsical quality. His biography gives that account of his practice.
What furniture forms and materials appear in the portfolio?
Cuthbert’s gallery documents a varied body of work rather than one standardized furniture line. It lists chairs and several coffee tables, as well as lamps and sculptural pieces. Materials named across the portfolio include bamboo, poplar, birch plywood, cedar, steel cable, rice paper and glass. Those are portfolio descriptions; they do not establish that every work uses the same construction or is currently for sale.

How did Cuthbert build the Tense Coffee Table?
In a build account dated October 31, 2012, Cuthbert describes developing a functional coffee table from a small prototype. The method combined laminated poplar curves, steel cable and copper sleeves, with a glass top completing the table. His project account describes the sequence:

- Form the wooden curves. He cut thin poplar strips, glued and stacked them, bent the stacks into curves, then clamped them while the glue set. To make four matching curves, he designed a mold on a computer and had it cut with a CNC machine.
- Prepare the pieces. He sanded the curves, drilled passages for the cable and applied polyurethane.
- Route and secure the cable. He threaded steel cable between the curves so some lines pulled the pieces together and others pulled them apart. Crimped copper sleeves secured the cable, and he assembled the stand in a jig.
- Finish the assembly. He added a glass top. Cuthbert notes that the stand can be flipped to make the cable crimps less visible.
Cuthbert writes that the four wooden components do not touch one another and that each contacts the ground at one point. This is a description of this specific table, not a general specification for all the furniture in his gallery.
What does the design process reveal about the work?
Cuthbert says he studied Studio Art and Psychology at Williams College and that his practice brings together interests in architecture and sculpture. He describes a process that starts with sketching and proceeds through planning, calculation and construction. “Process is central to my work,” he says in his biography.

The Tense Coffee Table account makes that process tangible: the repeated poplar curves required a designed mold, while the cable layout and assembly depended on planning and a jig. The result is both a usable table form and a sculptural arrangement in which the visible construction contributes to the object’s identity.

A Williams College profile recounts that 175,000 people saw Cuthbert’s Reddit photo album within 12 hours, that he received 30 orders on the day it reached the top spot, and that the total exceeded 50 orders by the end of that week. The profile’s page does not state its publication year; those figures are historical context, not evidence of current demand or availability. The profile places the events around October 2013.
