Find a school’s logo through that institution’s official brand, communications, or licensing office, then check its rules before reproducing it. A logo you find online is not automatically approved for reuse: artwork, permitted uses, and licensing requirements vary by school and by purpose.
What counts as a school logo?
A school’s identity system may include more than one graphic. Depending on the institution, it can include a logo, wordmark, seal, mascot, school name, colors, or other identifying marks. A seal, athletics mark, and main institutional logo may have different artwork or usage rules.

There is no universal set of official school-logo versions. Confirm which mark represents the institution, unit, or team you mean and whether it is approved for your intended use.
Where can I find my school’s official logo?
- Go to the school’s official website and look for its brand, identity, communications, or marketing section.
- Check whether that office provides downloadable artwork and usage guidance for your purpose. If the file or rules are unclear, contact the school’s brand or communications office.
- If the logo will appear on merchandise, contact the trademark-licensing office or follow the school’s merchandise licensing process before you print, order, or sell anything.
Use the institution’s supplied artwork rather than an image copied from a search result or an unofficial site. Check that the file is the correct mark and version for the school unit or team you want to represent.

Can I use a school logo on a shirt, sticker, or other product?
Do not assume you can reproduce a logo just because it is publicly visible. Schools set their own rules, and merchandise commonly requires advance permission, a licensed vendor, or both.
For example, the University of Illinois trademark guidance says prior approval is required to put its marks on products and names t-shirts, mugs, stickers, and sweatshirts as examples. The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) says its marks may be used only with permission and requires officially licensed vendors for merchandise bearing its trademarks. These are institution-specific policies, not universal terms.

Before making or ordering a school-branded product, ask the school’s licensing office whether your use needs permission, whether you must use an approved vendor, and what artwork and approval steps apply. UW–Madison’s campus guidance for merchandise and promotional items also notes that campus units should understand approvals, licensed vendors, and possible royalties.
Can I change a school logo’s colors or shape?
Use official artwork as supplied and follow the institution’s reproduction guidance. The University of South Carolina’s official logo guidance says: “Official logos should never be modified, altered, stretched or distorted in any way.” Other schools set their own rules, so check the relevant guide before changing colors, proportions, or other elements.

Do I need permission to use a logo in a post, flyer, or other communication?
Rules depend on the school and context; permission requirements are not limited to products. Rutgers says external organizations need permission to use university marks in communications and must be licensed to make products bearing them. See its brand licensing guidance for the institution’s process.
Notre Dame says use of its trademarks or identifiers, including its colors, on merchandise or in relation to goods and services requires express permission. Its guidance also explains its use of ® for federally registered marks and ™ for a recognized university mark that is not federally registered. Those symbol explanations are Notre Dame’s guidance; do not assume another institution applies the symbols the same way. Consult that school’s own policy.

How should I compare logo files or merchandise options?
For logo artwork, check the details that determine whether a file suits your purpose:
- Whether it is official and approved for the intended use.
- Which school, campus, department, or team it represents.
- Whether its color and file version match the institution’s guidance.
- Whether the seal, athletics mark, or main institutional mark has separate rules.
For a merchandise vendor, check whether it is authorized to use the school’s mark, what approval process applies, which product types are allowed, and whether school-specific fees or royalties may apply. There is no universal vendor arrangement; confirm terms with the school’s licensing office.
Where can I order approved school-logo merchandise?
Ask the school’s licensing office for its current list of licensed suppliers or its official merchandise route. Rutgers directs prospective retail merchandise licensees to its licensing agency, while Illinois provides separate internal and retail licensed-vendor routes. A licensed supplier or approval for one school does not establish permission to use another school’s marks.
