What won and how the award was decided

Seated Man was named the winner of the Cottesloe exhibition’s People’s Choice Award, styled the EY People’s Choice Prize in the organizer’s archive. The award was determined by visitor voting, rather than a jury result. Henry’s announcement said voters chose from more than 70 artworks by artists from 14 countries. Neither that announcement nor the organizer’s archive gives a vote total or margin.

The work is a 2011 sculpture. The organizer describes it as a larger-than-life painted bronze figure and lists its materials as bronze, corten steel and paint. Henry was the exhibition’s Tourism WA Invited International Artist.

Where and when Sculpture by the Sea 2024 took place

The award was part of the 20th annual Sculpture by the Sea at Cottesloe Beach, Perth, which ran from 1 to 18 March 2024. Henry’s exhibition overview lists 71 sculptures by artists from 14 countries. In a separate event notice, he said the show was expected to attract over 250,000 visitors; that was a forecast, not a confirmed final attendance figure.

Why the seated figure is open to interpretation

The organizer’s pre-event announcement said the sitter’s identity would remain anonymous and the work’s meaning ambiguous, leaving viewers room to form their own readings. Henry described that openness as part of how his work meets its audience: “Visual art has the power to communicate with us very directly. It is by nature non-verbal, and I like the way that meanings and motivations within the artwork exist very much in the mind of the viewer.”

He also explained how a sculpture can gather new narratives once it is seen beyond the studio: “Once the figures leave the studio, different people encounter the works in different ways, and that becomes a starting point for a variety of alternative narratives. Given time I like to think that the viewers stories will be as valid as mine.”

It was the Cottesloe award, not Bondi’s

Sculpture by the Sea holds separate exhibitions in Cottesloe, Perth, and Bondi, Sydney. Henry’s Seated Man won at Cottesloe in March. At the separate Bondi exhibition, held from 18 October to 4 November 2024, Drew McDonald’s Sharnana received the Allens People’s Choice Award and the Kids’ Choice Prize. Bondi’s result is unrelated to Henry’s Cottesloe win.
