Scott Marsh’s “The Dutt Plug” was a satirical mural depicting then Opposition Leader Peter Dutton as a sex toy. Reported in Darlinghurst, Sydney, days before Australians went to the polls in 2025, the work used mock-advertising copy to criticize what Marsh portrayed as campaign promises, political reversals and corporate influence. The reported online reaction was mixed, but the coverage does not establish how the public as a whole responded.
What “The Dutt Plug” mural depicted
PerthNow reporter Morgan de Smidt reported on 30 April 2025 that Australian street artist Scott Marsh had painted a mural on a wall in Darlinghurst, Sydney, depicting Peter Dutton as a sex toy. At the time, Dutton was Opposition Leader. The mural’s title, “The Dutt Plug,” combined his surname with a sexual pun.

The accompanying text borrowed the language of a mock advertisement. PerthNow reproduced Marsh’s lines: “Bend over backwards… just like your campaign promises,” “Worn out from all the flip-flopping without any real stimulation?” and “Then meet your new favorite backdoor deal: The Dutt Plug.” These are the artist’s satirical claims and framing, not independently established findings about Dutton. PerthNow’s report does not establish that the depicted object was a real product, or that authorized merchandise was made available.
Where and when it appeared
The reported location was a wall in Darlinghurst, an inner-city suburb of Sydney. PerthNow said the mural appeared days before Australians went to the polls, but did not give a more exact installation date. The report establishes when the work was covered—not whether it remains on the wall today.

How Marsh framed the political satire
The mural’s mock sales pitch turned criticism of political promises and alleged “flip-flopping” into a deliberately crude sexual joke. Its reference to a “backdoor deal” also pointed to corporate influence, as framed by Marsh’s text reproduced in PerthNow. Those are the artist’s accusations and political interpretation; the report does not substantiate them as factual conclusions.
The provocation fits a pattern in Marsh’s earlier political murals, though those works had different subjects and outcomes. In 2020, ABC News reported that a coal-themed mural in Port Adelaide was altered after complaints. Marsh explained that work as a “confronting kind of statement” about the Federal Government’s addiction to coal. In 2019, SBS News reported that a mural depicting George Pell was painted over after complaints; Marsh said it was “holding a mirror up to the hypocrisy of the church.” These examples offer context for his use of confrontational imagery, but do not show what happened to “The Dutt Plug.”

Greenpeace Australia Pacific’s account documents another 2020 Marsh mural in Chippendale addressing media, coal and government. Because Greenpeace is a campaigning organization, its account is best understood in that campaign context, including its presentation of the artist’s statement.

PerthNow described a mixed response online: some commenters were amused, while others were appalled. The article also reported praise from activist Grace Tame, whom it identified as the 2021 Australian of the Year. These are selected reactions reported by one outlet, not a poll or a representative measure of public opinion. No named statistic about the mural’s reception was established in the coverage.
