“Scrappy Triangles” can refer to more than one quilt project. The exact-title pattern from AllPeopleQuilt is a small, traditionally pieced quilt by Mari Martin for Connecting Threads; other projects with the same or similar name use foundation paper piecing or leftover strips. Check the designer and construction method before following a set of instructions.

Which Scrappy Triangles pattern do you mean?
| Pattern or source | Construction | Project scale | Materials or format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mari Martin for Connecting Threads, via AllPeopleQuilt | Traditional triangle-square piecing: sew two triangles together along a long edge | Finished quilt: 32 × 38 3/4 inches | Specified fabric yardage; no foundation paper |
| Leila Gardunia | Foundation paper piecing (FPP) | 6-inch foundations, with the tutorial also applicable to her 3-inch blocks | Printed foundations guide sewing; paper is removed afterward |
| The Polka Dot Chair, pattern contributed by Traci of Quilted Imperfection | Search-result description says it uses leftover 2 1/2-inch strips or a jelly-roll-style bundle | Not stated in the available page description | Free pattern; the full page was inaccessible, so further instructions and requirements are not established |
These are separate projects, not interchangeable versions of one set of instructions. If you want the exact-title quilt with full materials and construction details, the AllPeopleQuilt pattern is the clearest match.

Finished size and materials
American Patchwork & Quilting / AllPeopleQuilt lists a finished size of 32 × 38 3/4 inches. Its yardage assumes fabric that is 42 inches wide and usable; measurements include 1/4-inch seam allowances. The pattern page was updated May 13, 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- 1 yard tan print
- 1 1/2 yards total assorted prints in red, yellow, green, blue, and orange
- 1/2 yard gold stripe for binding
- 1 1/4 yards backing
- Batting measuring 38 × 45 inches
Cut and sew 238 units
- Cut 119 tan-print squares and 119 assorted-print squares, each 3 1/8 inches.
- Cut each square diagonally once to make triangles.
- Pair one tan triangle with one assorted-print triangle, right sides together, along the long edge. Sew the edge and press the seam away from the tan print.
- Check that each completed triangle-square measures 2 3/4 inches, including seam allowance. Make 238 units total.
Assemble and finish the quilt
- Arrange the units in 17 horizontal rows, following the pattern’s layout.
- Sew the units in each row together, then join the rows to make the quilt top.
- Layer the top, batting, and backing; baste and quilt as desired.
- Bind the quilt with 2 1/2-inch-wide bias strips cut from the gold stripe. The pattern specifies a total of 170 inches of binding strips.
How the foundation-paper-pieced Scrappy Triangles differ
Leila Gardunia’s Scrappy Triangles are foundation-paper-pieced half-square triangle blocks, not the cut-and-sew units in the AllPeopleQuilt quilt. In FPP, a printed block outline on paper acts as a sewing guide: fabric pieces are stitched onto the foundation, then the paper is removed. Gardunia’s tutorial is for her 6-inch foundations and says the method also applies to her 3-inch blocks and other FPP blocks.
Supplies and printing checks
The tutorial lists foundations (preprinted or printed at home), a sewing machine, thread, seam ripper, cutting mat, ruler, and either flat-head pins or a glue stick. An Add-a-quarter ruler and seam roller are optional. Gardunia recommends shorter stitches to make the foundation paper easier to remove; this is her instruction, not an independently tested result.

- Orders are despatched from our UK warehouse next working day.
- When printing a home foundation, set scaling to 100% and turn off “Fit to Size.”
- Measure the printed 1-inch check box before sewing, so you can confirm the pattern printed at the intended scale.
Gardunia’s shop also lists a 1-inch Scrappy Triangle PDF with 50 designs, intended for projects such as a pincushion or accents on bags and zipper pouches. The shop page links to 3-inch and 6-inch preprinted foundation pads as well. These are listings from the designer’s shop; availability and prices may change.
