Sew-Easy Scallops is a nine-block Log Cabin quilt designed by Joanna Figueroa of Fig & Tree Co. Its scalloped fabric appliqués frame the blocks, which finish at 18 inches each; the completed quilt measures 64½ inches square. The method uses freezer-paper templates, starch, and machine appliqué. The instructions below follow the AllPeopleQuilt pattern, updated March 13, 2026.

What you need to know before starting

The quilt is made from nine Log Cabin-style blocks, joined with sashing. Each block is 18 inches square when finished and measures 18½ inches square while still carrying its seam allowances. The pattern’s fabric quantities assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabrics and include ¼-inch seam allowances.

The defining detail is the scallop appliqué: each curved allowance is turned over a freezer-paper template with starch and a hot, dry iron. The straight edge is left unturned so it can be caught in the seam when the appliqué strip is attached to a block.

Key cuts

  • Nine 3½-inch brown-floral center squares.
  • Eighteen solid-cream strips measuring 3½ by 12½ inches and 18 measuring 3½ by 18½ inches for the scallop appliqués.
  • Twenty-four sashing rectangles and 16 sashing squares.
  • Seven binding strips measuring 2½ by 42 inches.
  • One hundred eight scallop pieces, prepared from the pattern template.

Prepare and stitch the scallop appliqués

  1. Trace the scallop template onto freezer paper 108 times. Cut the templates on the solid lines.
  2. Iron each template, shiny side down, onto the wrong side of the chosen fabric. Cut out each shape, adding a ¼-inch seam allowance along its curved edge.
  3. Place a piece wrong side up on a protected pressing surface. Use a small brush to apply a little starch to the curved allowance.
  4. With the tip of a hot, dry iron, turn the curved allowance over the freezer-paper template. Press until the fabric is dry, then peel away the template. Do not turn under the straight edge; it will be secured in the block seam.
  5. Center three scallop pieces on each 3½-by-12½-inch cream strip. Keep the outside appliqué edges ¼ inch from the short ends, then stitch the pieces in place with a narrow blind-hem or zigzag stitch.
  6. Make 18 short strips and 18 long strips. On each 3½-by-18½-inch strip, position the outside scallops 3¼ inches from the short ends, then stitch them in place using the same narrow stitch.

Build the nine Log Cabin blocks

Work outward from a brown-floral center square, following the pattern’s numbered rounds and fabric groupings. Add the matching position-1 rectangles to opposite sides of the center, then position-2 rectangles to the two remaining sides. Continue in numerical order through the assorted-print rounds.

Sew a short scallop strip to each of two opposite block edges and a long strip to each of the other two. The completed block should measure 18½ inches square, including seam allowances. Repeat to make nine blocks.

Assemble and finish the quilt

  1. Arrange the blocks with the sashing squares and rectangles according to the pattern layout. The quilt center is assembled in seven rows.
  2. Sew the pieces in each row together, then join the rows to complete the quilt top.
  3. Layer the top with the batting and backing, baste the layers, and quilt as desired.
  4. Join the seven green-floral binding strips as needed and bind the quilt edges.

The published sample, quilted by Diana Johnson, has a feather wreath in each block, stippling in the cream background, and a feather vine in the sashing. That is one finishing treatment; the pattern allows the quilt to be quilted as desired.

Adapting scallops for a garment edge

The quilt’s freezer-paper-and-starch appliqué process is not the same construction method as finishing a scalloped garment hem. For garment edges, Susan Khalje’s Threads guide to sewing a scalloped hem recommends testing the fabric, planning scallop proportions and spacing on muslin, and using a firm template to transfer the outline. A facing is generally a clean finish for fabric that frays; fabric that does not fray may be clean-cut. Small stitches, clipping around curves and at the apex, and careful pressing help a garment edge lie flat.

Choose the approach for the project rather than treating these methods as interchangeable: consider whether the fabric frays or is stable, whether the scallop is an appliqué or an exposed garment edge, the intended finish, and the scale and spacing of the curves.
