Sew a camping silverware holder by arranging your own utensils first, then drafting the pocket layout and roll dimensions around them. The Make: design uses a fabric shell, divided pockets, hook-and-loop tape and two ties; you can adjust its measurements to suit the cutlery and tools you plan to carry.
Choose a construction approach
Two tutorials offer distinct ways to make a roll-up cutlery holder. The Make: project is designed around a camping utensil set: draft the shell to fit the items, sew pocket divisions, add hook-and-loop tape and tie it closed. Deb’s Days describes a layered approach using main and lining fabric, batting and bias tape. These are separate designs, not interchangeable instructions.

Gather materials and tools
Make: lists approximately 1½–2 yards of duck fabric, matching thread and one yard of ¾-inch hook-and-loop tape. Those quantities are a starting point for that project, not a universal requirement: fabric needs vary with the number and size of the items, and tape length should be checked against the holder’s width.

- Duck fabric and matching thread
- ¾-inch hook-and-loop tape
- Sewing machine, scissors, straight pins, pencil, straight edge and a knitting needle for turning the ties
- Newspaper or similar paper for drafting the pattern
Set out every utensil before drafting, including extras such as a bottle opener or wine opener. Make: author Susie Osborn describes the goal as keeping reusable silverware together for camping: “Through the years, my husband and I always preferred taking silverware, not plasticware, on our camping trips.”
Draft a pattern to fit your utensils
- Arrange the utensils in the order and spacing you want them stored. Leave enough room between items to sew pocket divisions and to retrieve each utensil comfortably.
- On newspaper, sketch the holder with three sections: an upper flap to fold over the contents, a lower section that will become the pockets, and a center section between them. Make the lower pocket area tall enough to hold the utensils securely.
- Check the fold before cutting: fold the paper pattern over the tallest utensil and confirm the flap covers the pocket opening. Also check that the overall shape can roll up around the contents.
- Follow the Make: layout by placing the pattern’s right edge on the fabric fold. Add ½ inch for the seams specified in that project, and adjust the overall pattern to your own contents rather than assuming one set of dimensions fits every kit.
Sew the shell and finish its edges
- Cut the fabric on the fold according to the checked pattern.
- With right sides together, sew around the outside, leaving a 6-inch opening for turning, as in the Make: instructions.
- Turn the shell right side out. Use a knitting needle or another blunt tool to ease the corners into shape, then press the fabric.
- Topstitch around the edge, closing the turning opening as you sew.
Make the pockets for the layout
- Place the utensils on the lower section again and mark where each pocket division should go. Include any separate pocket needed for a larger tool such as a bottle or wine opener.
- Sew the pocket divisions from the bottom toward the top. Make: recommends this direction to help reduce fabric buckling.
- For shorter utensils, mark and sew their pocket bottoms at the appropriate height so they sit securely rather than dropping too far into the pocket.
- If you want labels, make them from non-fraying liner fabric and attach them to the relevant pockets.
Add the closure and ties
- Position hook-and-loop tape by folding the holder around its tallest utensil, then mark where the two sides meet. Sew the tape in place so the roll closes without crushing or exposing the contents.
- For the Make: ties, cut two strips measuring 2½ by 36 inches. Sew each strip, turn it right side out, press and topstitch.
- Position both ties on the back of the holder and sew them securely in place. The source’s design uses the ties to secure the roll after the top flap is folded over.
Protect knives and test the finished roll
Cover knife blades before putting them in the holder; an exposed blade can cut through the fabric. Make: suggests making a temporary sheath from cardboard and tape if a proper cover is unavailable. Before packing for a trip, place all the utensils in their pockets, fold the upper flap over them, roll the holder and tie it closed. If an item shifts or the roll does not close comfortably, adjust the pocket or closure placement before relying on it outdoors.
