To organize sewing supplies, keep the tools you use every session within reach, store each in-progress project together in its own bag, and put bulk or occasional supplies in labeled containers. A shoebox, zippered bag, divided box, drawer tray, or portable caddy can all work—the right choice depends on what you own and where you sew.

Start by sorting supplies by how you use them
Gather the tools and supplies you reach for during an ordinary sewing session. Separate them from project-specific materials and from the rest of your stash. This gives each category a clear home:

- Active-project materials: Keep everything for the current project together so it is ready when you return.
- Bulk and occasional supplies: Store these elsewhere in labeled boxes, bags, or drawers.
As a practical starting point for basic tools and notions, Utah State University Extension suggests containers such as a shoebox, zippered bag, pencil box, or compartment box. You do not need a sewing-branded organizer; choose a container that fits the contents and is easy to put away.

Choose storage that fits your sewing space
Consider whether supplies need to stay at a fixed station or travel with you, whether you want to see them or protect them from dust, and what space you have available. The best setup is one you can reach while sewing and reset without hassle.

Set up a reachable home for everyday tools
Keep frequently used notions in the drawer or container closest to your work area. A small divided tray or a few containers inside a drawer can stop loose tools from disappearing beneath fabric or other supplies. Keep small scissors by the machine for clipping thread.
If you do not have a permanent sewing station, use a portable caddy or a project bag that you can carry to your work surface and put away afterward. If a door or wall is available, an over-door organizer or pegboard can make use of vertical space instead of taking up a tabletop.

Keep each active project together
Put a project’s fabric, pattern, thread, interfacing, and notions in the same bag or container. That way, the pieces stay together between sessions instead of getting mixed into your general supplies. Label project bags or boxes if you have more than one underway.
New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension’s Designing a Sewing Center (Guide C-412, reprinted June 2001) notes: “Plastic zipper-top bags make excellent storage containers for sewing supplies.” The guide is older, but the basic idea remains useful: a simple bag can keep related supplies together.

Make thread easy to see and less likely to tangle
Store thread where you can see the colors when choosing what to use. Arrange spools by color if that makes selection easier in your setup. Secure each loose end in a spool notch or otherwise fasten it so it does not unwind and tangle with nearby thread.

Label storage boxes and bags so you can tell what is inside without opening each one. To keep a cutting mat in good condition, store it flat or in an organizer rather than rolling it. Utah State University Extension also cautions that extreme heat and cold can damage cutting mats.

Reset the organizer after sewing
Return everyday tools to their assigned container, secure thread ends, and put the active project back in its bag. If a container keeps becoming cluttered, adjust its contents or location to match what you actually reach for; the system should make it easier to find and put away supplies.
