The Shoo Fly quilt block is a nine-patch: four half-square triangles (HSTs) in the corners, four plain squares at the sides and one square in the center. Turn the accent triangles inward toward the center. For a 12-inch finished block, one documented cutting plan uses 4½-inch plain squares and 4⅞-inch squares for the HSTs, which are trimmed to 4½ inches before assembly.

How the Shoo Fly block is arranged

Think of the block as a three-by-three grid. Its four corner units are HSTs; the other five units are plain squares. In each corner HST, orient the contrasting or accent fabric so its triangular section points toward the center square. That inward-facing arrangement gives the block its familiar pinwheel-like movement.

Four corners Half-square triangles Turn the accent triangles toward the center.
Four side positions Plain squares Use the background fabric or another planned color.

Two fabrics with clear contrast make the geometry easy to see, but a scrappy version can use multiple fabrics. Choose fabrics for the contrast and overall effect you want; the design does not require a particular color palette.

Choose a finished size and use its complete cutting plan

Shoo Fly blocks are made in multiple sizes. Scrapish lists finished sizes of 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 inches, while other tutorials give their own cutting instructions. Treat each size and method as a complete plan: do not combine measurements from different tutorials.

  • The block size is 12 1/2" x 12 1/2".

Documented 12-inch finished example

American Patchwork & Quilting’s 12-inch finished block instructions use a quarter-inch seam allowance. Cut plain squares at 4½ inches. For the corner HSTs, pair 4⅞-inch squares, then trim each completed triangle-square unit to 4½ inches square. These cut and unit measurements include seam allowances; once the nine units are sewn together, the block measures 12½ inches unfinished and finishes at 12 inches when joined into a quilt. See the Shoo Fly Quilt Block instructions from American Patchwork & Quilting.

Make and assemble the block

  1. Prepare the fabric. Cut the plain squares and HST starting squares according to one selected size plan. A rotary cutter, cutting mat and ruler help make consistent cuts; use a marking tool if your HST method calls for marking.
  2. Make four HSTs. Pair the designated squares and sew them using the chosen plan’s method and seam allowance. The American Patchwork & Quilting 12-inch example uses a quarter-inch seam allowance.
  3. Trim the HSTs. Square each unit to the measurement specified by the plan. For the 12-inch example above, trim to 4½ inches. A quilting ruler can help you check the unit’s edges and keep the finished block square.
  4. Lay out the nine units. Put one HST in each corner, with the accent triangles pointing inward. Place plain squares in the four side positions and the center.
  5. Sew three rows. Join the three units in each row, keeping the arrangement intact. Press the seams using the method that suits your fabric and helps the seams lie flat at intersections.
  6. Join the rows. Sew the three rows together, aligning the seams where the units meet. Check the block’s unfinished size against the selected plan before joining it to other blocks.

Other tutorials may use different cutting dimensions or construction methods, so follow their measurements as a set. Create Whimsy lists a sewing machine and iron among the basic supplies; the exact pressing sequence can vary by pattern.

Choose fabrics and layout for the quilt

A two-fabric block gives a crisp distinction between the background and the inward-facing triangles. A scrappy block offers more variation, but plan the placement before sewing so the corner shapes remain legible. When combining multiple Shoo Fly blocks, you can join them directly or separate them with sashing; choose based on the visual spacing you want, while keeping block sizes consistent.

What is known about the block’s name and history?

Accounts differ on the name’s origin, and the available tutorials do not establish a definitive etymology. Create Whimsy reports that historians place the block’s origin in the 1800s while noting competing explanations for its name. Quilt Street gives a specific story connecting it to molasses cake and says it became popular in Pennsylvania Dutch and Amish communities in the 1880s. These are attributed historical accounts, not a settled origin established by primary documentation.
