The best project depends on how many 10-inch squares you have and whether you want to keep the large prints intact. Two squares can make a soup bowl cozy; five to six can become an organizer or wall hanging; eight to 15 work well for pillows, pot holders, and table runners; and 36 or more can make a lap or throw quilt.

This guide uses 10-inch squares as the broad term. Layer Cake is Moda’s branded name for a coordinated bundle of nominal 10-by-10-inch squares. Other manufacturers sell similar precuts under names such as 10 Stackers, Ten Squares, Sundaes, Stacks, Bali Crackers, and 10 Karat. The projects below separate whole-square designs from projects that cut the squares into smaller units, so you can choose whether to preserve focal prints or prioritize patchwork design.

First, understand what you have
A 10-inch square is a nominal quilting precut. It is intended to be approximately 10 by 10 inches before sewing, but it is not necessarily an exactly measured, straight-edged square.
Layer Cake versus generic 10-inch squares
Moda uses Layer Cake as the name for its coordinated 10-inch precut. Moda commonly packages 42 squares from a collection, although a pattern may call for only 36 usable squares or may require additional fabric. A generic bundle from another manufacturer may contain a different number of squares, different fabric cuts, or a different usable measurement.
Do not assume that every package described as a Layer Cake contains 42 squares. The safest approach is to count the squares, inspect the edges, and compare the pattern’s actual square requirement with your supply.
Other brands use names including 10 Stackers, Ten Squares, Sundaes, Stacks, Bali Crackers, and 10 Karat. Those products are similar in purpose, but the names and pack contents are not interchangeable guarantees.
Pinked edges change the usable measurement
Many commercial precuts have zigzag, or pinked, edges. Depending on whether you measure from the points or the valleys, the same square can appear to be slightly larger or smaller. Moda also notes that the depth of the pinking can make the size vary slightly.
- Measure one or two squares before cutting the whole project.
- Follow the pattern’s cutting diagram and edge-reference instructions.
- If the pattern requires precise subcutting, square the pieces consistently first.
- Do not automatically trim every precut to a perfect 10 inches; trimming may remove fabric needed for the pattern.
- Use the same reference point on every pinked edge. Inconsistent alignment is more damaging than a small, consistent difference.
Moda’s precut guide and pinked-edge guidance explain why consistent handling matters.

A Layer Cake or other precut bundle is usually selected to coordinate by collection, color, or designer. Individually cut squares may be more accurate if you cut them from yardage, but they may also vary in grain direction, shrinkage, and print placement. If you combine the two, measure them together before committing to a pattern.

Projects using two squares
1. Soup bowl cozy
The free soup bowl cozy pattern uses two 10-inch cotton fabric squares and two 10-inch batting squares. It fits a bowl approximately 6 inches in diameter and is a practical way to use two favorite prints.
The construction includes quilting, darts, turning, and topstitching. The darts create the bowl shape, so this is not simply two squares sewn together. When the layers become bulky, the instructions recommend trimming seam allowances in bulky areas and using a walking foot if needed.
Important microwave qualification: make this only with 100% cotton fabric, 100% cotton batting, and 100% cotton thread. Do not use polyester, metallic materials, or embellishments that are unsuitable for microwave use. If you cannot identify every material, heat the bowl separately and place it into the cozy afterward. A decorative bowl cozy and a microwave bowl cozy are not automatically the same thing.
2. Test blocks and small quilted utilities
Two squares are also enough for a pair of half-square-triangle units, a nine-patch experiment, a small quilted panel, or a test of an unfamiliar fabric combination. These are useful when you have only leftovers or want to test seam allowance, pressing, and color contrast before cutting a full bundle.
A pouch, container, mug rug, or other small item can be an excellent adaptation, but do not assume that any pouch pattern drafted for fat quarters will fit two 10-inch squares. Treat an improvised project as a prototype: make a paper or scrap-fabric version first, check the finished dimensions, and add interfacing or lining if the item needs structure.
Projects using five to six squares
3. Love Letters Organizer
The Love Letters Organizer uses six assorted 10-inch squares and finishes at 8½ by 16 inches. It has three pockets, making it useful for letters, patterns, small tools, or bedside items.

This is a small project, but it is not a zero-material project. In addition to the precuts, plan for pocket fabric, backing fabric, binding, and foam stabilizer. The stabilizer gives the organizer body; ordinary quilt batting alone may not produce the same result.

4. Stars and Leaves Appliqué wall hanging
The Stars and Leaves Appliqué project uses five 10-inch flannel squares plus yardage and finishes at 32½ inches. It uses fusible appliqué and zigzag stitching, so it is a good choice when you want to use attractive prints without piecing every square into small units.
5. Tropical Blooms wall hanging
The Tropical Blooms Wall Hanging uses five orange 10-inch squares along with other fabrics and finishes at 44½ inches square. The construction combines piecing, fusible appliqué, borders, and buttons.
These wall hangings illustrate an important distinction: a pattern may use five 10-inch squares as a specific color group rather than as the entire fabric supply. Read the complete cutting list before assuming that five squares are enough to make the project.
6. Partial-bundle panels and mini quilts
With five or six squares, you can also make a decorative panel, a small pillow front, or a mini quilt. These are best treated as design adaptations unless you are following a drafted pattern. Keep large motifs whole, add a background or sashing fabric, and measure the completed panel before cutting borders or backing.
Projects using eight to 15 squares
7. Fabrics Aplenty Pillow
The Fabrics Aplenty Pillow uses eight 10-inch squares—four light and four dark—plus four 5-inch squares. It finishes at 18 inches square and uses Log Cabin-style piecing, borders, and a separate backing.
You will also need an 18-inch pillow form. Because the design depends on light-dark organization, sort the bundle by value rather than relying only on color names. A quick grayscale photograph of the squares can reveal whether the supposed lights and darks actually separate.
8. Tweet Treat pot holders
The Tweet Treat Pot Holders source includes two useful versions:
- The hen pot holder uses 10 assorted 10-inch squares and finishes at 7½ by 10 inches. It includes fusible-web appliqué and binding.
- The striped pot holder uses 15 assorted 10-inch squares and finishes at 8 by 10 inches. It uses strip piecing and crosshatch quilting.
Use insulated or heat-resistant batting such as Insul-Bright for a functional pot holder, as specified by the pattern. Ordinary quilt batting is not a substitute for heat protection. Also distinguish a functional pot holder from a decorative quilted panel; the latter should not be used to handle hot cookware unless the materials and construction have been designed for that purpose.

The Curved Appliqué Table Runner uses 15 assorted 10-inch squares plus five fat quarters and finishes at 28½ by 40½ inches.
Despite its name, the curved shapes are applied over four-patch foundations rather than sewn together with curved seams. That makes the project more approachable than traditional curved piecing while still introducing fusible web and narrow-zigzag appliqué.
10. Nine-patches from only two squares at a time
Moda’s Layer Cake nine-patch method uses one light and one dark 10-inch square. Cut each square into four strips measuring 2½ by 10 inches, arrange the strips, and create three nine-patch blocks that finish at 6 inches.
That yield makes the technique useful for placemats, pillow fronts, table runners, wall hangings, and small scrap quilts. It also lets you work through a partial bundle pair by pair rather than designing an entire quilt at once. Because each original square is cut into strips, it is a simple-subcutting project rather than a whole-square project.

11. Small tote, placemats, and table projects
The paid Tens Have It pattern book is specifically organized around 10-inch squares and includes projects such as a tote, placemats, table runners, pillow shams, a bedscarf, and quilts. The tote finishes at 14 by 13 by 3 inches.

Bag projects generally require more than patchwork. Check for fusible interfacing, foam stabilizer, lining, handles, zippers, magnetic snaps, or other hardware before starting. A 10-inch square may provide the patchwork exterior, but it may not provide the lining or structural components.
Projects using 20 to 36 squares
12. Piece of Cake Quilt
The beginner-friendly Piece of Cake Quilt uses 36 10-inch squares in a straightforward six-by-six grid and finishes at 57½ inches square. The finished square units measure 9½ inches, reflecting the seam allowances.
This is one of the clearest options for someone who wants to preserve prints and avoid complicated cutting. You still need separate batting, backing, and binding. The instructions recommend diagonal straight-line quilting with a walking foot, a manageable finishing method for a first quilt.
13. Layer Cake Pocket Squares lap quilt
The free Layer Cake Pocket Squares pattern uses 36 individual 10-inch squares or one Layer Cake and finishes at 45½ inches square in its lap-quilt version. Unlike a simple six-by-six grid, it subcuts the squares into rectangles and pocket-like units.
This is a good choice when you want a more designed patchwork surface and do not mind cutting the precuts. It is not the best choice for preserving every large-scale motif. Fat Quarter Shop announced this pattern in March 2026; download links and instructions should still be checked before cutting.
14. Lap quilts, baby quilts, and throw-size adaptations
Twenty to 36 squares give you enough material for many lap, baby, and throw designs, but the finished size depends on the block pattern, sashing, borders, and background fabric. A pattern that uses 36 squares may produce a different size from another pattern using 36 squares because the squares may be cut into smaller units.
For a simple partial stash project, lay the squares in rows on a design wall or clean floor, add background or sashing as needed, and calculate the finished dimensions from the actual sewn units. Do not cut borders from a nominal size until the quilt center has been assembled and measured.

15. A full Layer Cake quilt
A typical 42-square Moda Layer Cake gives you enough variety for a full coordinated quilt, but it does not automatically complete any particular pattern. You may need background fabric, borders, binding, batting, backing, a charm pack, or additional yardage. Conversely, some patterns use only 36 squares and leave six squares available for another project.
With a full bundle, consider three strategies:
- Preserve the prints: arrange whole squares in a grid, with background fabric, sashing, or borders to enlarge the quilt.
- Use controlled scrappiness: sort the squares into light, medium, dark, and accent groups, then repeat a block design while controlling value.
- Split the bundle: reserve the strongest focal prints for a main quilt and use the remaining squares for pillows, pockets, pot holders, binding accents, or appliqué.
The current American Patchwork & Quilting roundup, updated May 14, 2026, shows the range possible with this precut format: quilts, runners, pillows, organizers, bowl cozies, pot holders, and wall hangings. Its usefulness is greatest when you compare the individual pattern requirements rather than treating all 10-inch-square projects as equivalent.
Decide whether to keep the squares whole
| Project type | What happens to the square | Best fabric choices | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole-square quilt or pillow | Little or no subcutting | Large florals, directional prints, panels, novelty designs | Simple construction, but the layout and contrast must do more visual work |
| Simple subcutting | Strips, rectangles, four-patches, or smaller squares | Small to medium prints and non-directional designs | More design possibilities, but some motif loss and fabric waste |
| Half-square triangles | Each pair becomes eight smaller units | Prints with clear contrast and manageable direction | Efficient yield, but bias edges require trimming and accuracy |
| Quarter-square triangles | Two squares become two larger multi-triangle blocks | High-contrast fabrics and carefully oriented prints | Useful for stars and hourglass blocks, but multiple bias edges stretch |
| Appliqué | Squares may become backgrounds or appliqué shapes | Focal prints that can be framed or cut intentionally | Less piecing, but requires fusible web and controlled stitching |
| Structured bag or organizer | Squares become exterior panels or pockets | Coordinated prints that can tolerate seams | Needs stabilizer, lining, and sometimes hardware |
Reserve large florals, conversational prints, directional motifs, novelty fabrics, metallic prints, and digitally printed designs for whole-square layouts, pillow fronts, organizer pockets, appliqué backgrounds, or other areas where the design will remain visible. A pattern that cuts every square into 2½-, 3½-, or 4½-inch pieces may erase the feature you bought the bundle to enjoy.
Technique toolbox for 10-inch squares
Eight-at-a-time half-square triangles
Moda’s eight-at-a-time HST tutorial confirms that two 10-inch squares produce eight half-square triangles. The units trim to 4½ inches and finish at 4 inches in a quilt. The trim measurement is not the finished measurement.

- Place two 10-inch squares right sides together.
- Mark both diagonals on the top square.
- Sew a scant ¼-inch seam on both sides of each marked diagonal.
- Cut along both diagonals.
- Cut horizontally and vertically through the center, using the 5-inch marks.
- Press the units, then trim each HST to 4½ inches.
HSTs are efficient for stars, pinwheels, flying-geese-inspired layouts, and many scrap quilts. Their bias edges can stretch, so handle them gently, press without dragging the iron, and trim before joining them into larger blocks.
Quarter-square triangles
For a more advanced option, Moda’s quarter-square triangle guidance shows that two 10-inch squares yield two quarter-square-triangle blocks. They trim to 9 inches and finish at 8½ inches.

Four-patches and strip piecing
Four-patches are a practical middle ground between whole-square sewing and intricate triangle work. The curved appliqué table runner uses four-patch foundations, and the striped pot holder uses strip piecing. These approaches make a coordinated bundle look more complex without requiring curved seams.

Appliqué lets you use five or 10-inch squares as colorful shapes, backgrounds, or framed motifs. The Stars and Leaves, Tropical Blooms, and Curved Appliqué projects use fusible web and zigzag or narrow-zigzag stitching. Follow the pattern’s fabric placement and pressing instructions; fusible web is not a substitute for stabilizer when making a structured bag.
Quilt As You Go
If conventional quilt finishing is the part you want to avoid, Fat Quarter Shop’s Quilt As You Go template guidance identifies Layer Cakes as compatible with its templates. The smaller templates use 10-inch batting squares, while the larger templates use 14-inch batting squares.
Quilt As You Go integrates piecing, batting, and quilting in manageable sections. The template projects are presented as avoiding separate backing, binding, and long-arm quilting, although you should follow the specific pattern’s construction and finishing instructions. It is particularly useful for a maker who has enough squares for a quilt but does not want to handle one large quilt sandwich.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare the fabric before cutting
Prewash only with a deliberate plan
Prewashing precuts is a workflow choice, not a universal rule. Moda provides a method using mesh bags, a gentle cycle, limited spin, and color catchers when needed, followed by pressing. It also warns that washing can cause shrinkage and fraying. See Moda’s precut-washing guidance.
By contrast, Quilting Daily’s fabric-preparation advice cautions against prewashing a precut kit because washing can distort the pieces.
For a pattern designed around precuts, the practical default is to follow the designer’s instructions and consider leaving the squares unwashed so their cut dimensions remain stable. If you always prewash, test-wash two squares first, separate darks and lights, use mesh bags, and expect to repress and possibly square the pieces. Do not mix washed and unwashed squares casually in a precision project.
Sort by value, print scale, and direction
- Value: separate light, medium, dark, low-volume, and accent squares.
- Scale: reserve large motifs for whole-square areas; use smaller prints for subcutting.
- Direction: decide whether directional prints must all face the same way before cutting.
- Contrast: photograph the squares in grayscale if a pattern depends on light-dark separation.
Colorful prints can look different enough in normal light but merge together when converted to grayscale. Patterns with stars, HSTs, or secondary designs need especially deliberate contrast. Moda’s Square Dance guidance notes that a Layer Cake with insufficient contrast may need an additional charm pack.
Use the pattern’s seam allowance
Many quilting patterns in this group use a ¼-inch seam allowance, including the Piece of Cake Quilt and Love Letters Organizer. That does not mean every bag, organizer, or general sewing pattern uses the same allowance. Check the instructions, test the seam on scraps, and keep the seam allowance consistent from the first unit to the last.

Before choosing a project, check whether you need:
- Background, sashing, border, or additional yardage.
- Batting, backing, and binding for a quilt or wall hanging.
- 100% cotton batting and thread for a properly specified microwave cozy.
- Insulated batting for a functional pot holder.
- Foam stabilizer, fusible fleece, or interfacing for an organizer or bag.
- Fusible web and appliqué thread or stitching supplies.
- A pillow form, such as the 18-inch form required for the Fabrics Aplenty Pillow.
- A walking foot for straight-line quilting or bulky layered construction.
- Zippers, handles, lining, snaps, or other hardware for a tote or pouch.
- A large enough cutting ruler to square the precuts and subcut accurately.
A pattern’s phrase “one Layer Cake” may mean one retail bundle, 36 usable squares from that bundle, or a specified number of squares plus background fabric. Always translate the package name into an actual cutting list before beginning.
Common problems and how to recover
The squares are not exactly 10 inches
Likely causes: pinked edges, shrinkage, handling, or differences between manufacturers.
Recovery: measure several squares, select a consistent edge reference, and trim only if the pattern allows enough fabric. If the pattern relies on an untrimmed 10-inch precut to yield a particular subcut size, a smaller square may not produce the stated units.
Best Value
- 84-Piece 5-Inch Fabric Squares Set: This collection includes 84 precut cotton squares, each measuring 5×5 inches (12.7×12.7 cm), featuring 21 distinct purple-themed patterns with 4 repeats per design. The generous quantity and uniform sizing support diverse sewing projects while eliminating fabric preparation time.
- Premium Cotton Material: Crafted from soft, breathable cotton that maintains colorfastness after washing and resists fading. The tightly woven fabric ensures clean edges without fraying during handling, making it ideal for quilting, apparel decoration, and long-lasting craft creations.
- Spring-Themed Purple Patterns: Features a cohesive purple color palette with floral motifs, roses, polka dots, stripes, gingham checks, and retro-inspired prints. The coordinated designs allow effortless pattern mixing for visually harmonious quilts, clothing accents, or decorative projects.
- Versatile Creative Applications: Suitable for patchwork quilts, doll clothing, scrapbooking, gift wrapping, home décor accents, and fashion accessories. The manageable size facilitates precise cutting for intricate shapes while remaining large enough for standalone appliqué or embroidery bases.
- User-Friendly Crafting Features: Precut dimensions reduce material waste and simplify project planning. The lightweight fabric responds well to sewing, gluing, or ironing techniques, while the stackable format enables compact storage and organized pattern selection during creative sessions.
The blocks do not line up
Inconsistent pinked-edge alignment, inconsistent ¼-inch seams, untrimmed HSTs or QSTs, pressing distortion, mixed fabric preparation, and mixed manufacturers are common causes.
- Stop before assembling every row.
- Measure several blocks and compare their width and height.
- Determine whether the error began during cutting, sewing, trimming, or pressing.
- Standardize the remaining units rather than forcing rows together.
- Measure the completed quilt center before cutting borders.
Adding a border will not correct a quilt center that was cut to the wrong size; calculate the border from the assembled center.
The large motifs disappear
If a floral or novelty print vanishes after cutting into triangles or narrow strips, the project has used the fabric appropriately for its construction but not for its visual purpose. Save remaining focal prints for whole squares, borders, pockets, appliqué, or a pillow front. Use less directional prints for HSTs and strip piecing.
The project is too bulky
Multiple batting layers, foam stabilizer combined with batting, insulated batting, or heavily quilted layers can make turning and sewing difficult. Follow the pattern’s specified materials and seam-trimming instructions. For the soup bowl cozy, the source pattern recommends trimming bulky seam allowances to ⅛ inch in the relevant areas and using a walking foot if the machine struggles.
The project calls for one Layer Cake but needs more fabric
This wording is shorthand for the precut portion, not a promise that the bundle supplies every material. A pattern can require one Layer Cake plus background squares, a charm pack, borders, binding, batting, backing, or yardage. Check the complete supply list before cutting the bundle.
A free pattern link no longer works
Free-pattern availability can change. Search by the exact project title on the original publisher’s site, and preserve the pattern name and source link when saving your project notes. Do not assume that a third-party repost is the canonical version or that a free pattern may be reproduced or sold commercially; check the designer’s terms.
Which project should you choose?
- You want a fast, small finish: choose the soup bowl cozy, a pot holder, or a test block. Use a tested pattern for anything involving heat.
- You have six leftover squares: choose the Love Letters Organizer or a small appliqué wall hanging, remembering that both require additional fabric and stabilizing materials.
- You want to display large-scale prints: choose a whole-square quilt, pillow, organizer pocket, or wall hanging.
- You want to learn patchwork: start with the six-by-six Piece of Cake Quilt, a four-patch runner, or the Layer Cake nine-patch method.
- You want to learn triangles: use the eight-at-a-time HST method, but plan to trim every unit and choose fabrics with clear value contrast.
- You want a more substantial home project: choose the Fabrics Aplenty Pillow, the Curved Appliqué Table Runner, or a structured tote.
- You have 36 squares: compare the whole-square Piece of Cake Quilt with the more heavily subcut Layer Cake Pocket Squares pattern.
- You have a full bundle: make a quilt, or divide the squares between a main quilt and several coordinated gifts.
- You dislike traditional quilt finishing: investigate Quilt As You Go templates that accept 10-inch squares.
The most reliable rule is simple: count the squares, inspect the actual dimensions, decide how much cutting your prints can tolerate, and then buy the pattern materials that the project really requires.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Layer Cake always 42 10-inch squares?
No. Moda commonly describes a Layer Cake as 42 nominal 10-by-10-inch squares, but pack counts and usable dimensions can vary by collection or manufacturer. Read the pattern’s square count rather than assuming that every retail bundle contains 42 usable pieces.
Should I prewash Layer Cake squares?
There is no universal answer. For a precut-specific pattern, follow the designer’s instructions and consider leaving the squares unwashed to preserve their dimensions. If you prewash, test a couple of squares first, use mesh bags and a gentle cycle, separate darks and lights, and expect shrinkage, fraying, pressing, or squaring afterward.

No. A microwave bowl cozy must follow a pattern that specifies suitable materials. The cited soup bowl cozy requires 100% cotton fabric, 100% cotton batting, and 100% cotton thread, with no polyester or metallic materials. If you cannot verify the materials, heat the bowl separately and place it in the cozy afterward.
What is the easiest quilt from a Layer Cake?
The Piece of Cake Quilt is a straightforward beginner option: it uses 36 10-inch squares in a six-by-six grid and finishes at 57½ inches square. It still requires separate batting, backing, binding, and quilting.
The Bottom Line
Ten-inch squares are useful far beyond standard Layer Cake quilts. Two can make a bowl cozy, six can make an organizer or wall hanging, eight to 15 can become pillows, pot holders, or runners, and 36 can make a complete lap or throw project. Measure the actual precuts, distinguish whole-square designs from subcutting patterns, and treat heat-related projects as material-specific rather than automatically safe.
