Wool can become anything from a small pincushion to a tailored jacket, but the best project depends on the fabric’s construction and weight. For decorative work, felted wool is especially handy: it holds raw edges without raveling. For garments, choose a pattern designed for the wool’s weight, drape, and woven or knit construction.

Choose a project that fits your wool
For small crafts and appliqué
Felted wool is a practical choice when a design uses exposed edges. Felting shrinks and densifies wool until it will not ravel in the same way as untreated woven fabric, so appliqué shapes can be cut and stitched down without folding their edges under. American Patchwork & Quilting Editors describe it this way: “Felted wool is easy to handle, doesn’t fray, and is quite forgiving.” Their project collection includes needle keepers, pincushions, penny rugs, runners, wall hangings, mats, bags, and ornaments.

For garments
Check the pattern’s fabric recommendations before cutting. Match the fabric’s construction—woven or knit—as well as its weight and drape to the pattern. Coating-weight wool is intended for coats and jackets; suiting wool can work for tailored separates and dresses; lightweight wool is suggested for shirts and blouses. A garment pattern designed for one weight or construction may not behave as intended in another. A wool fabric guide outlines these broad uses, but the individual pattern and fabric specifications should guide the final choice.
For wool-on-wool quilting
Wool can also be layered and stitched as part of a quilted design. Check the pattern’s material list to see whether it calls for wool felt, felted wool, or woven wool cloth; those materials are not interchangeable in every project.

Beginner-friendly option: a wool-cloth pincushion
A small pincushion is a manageable way to use wool scraps. The University of New Hampshire Extension wrist-pincushion guide calls for two scraps of tightly woven wool that does not fray easily, wool filler, cardboard circles, elastic, a needle, and thread. Follow that project’s instructions for sizing and assembly rather than substituting felt automatically: the guide specifies woven wool cloth.

How to felt wool for appliqué
Felting deliberately changes the fabric: it shrinks and becomes denser. American Patchwork & Quilting Editors describe one method of machine washing wool in hot water, rinsing it in cool water, and drying it on a medium setting. Because shrinkage is part of the process, test a scrap first, especially before treating valued cloth, and follow the care and material requirements of the project.

Cut and attach appliqué shapes
- Trace the shape onto freezer paper.
- Press the paper’s shiny side against the wool, then cut the wool to the traced line.
- Remove the paper and position the wool shape on its fabric foundation.
- Attach it with a running stitch or a decorative hand- or machine-embroidery stitch, as suited to the design.
For penny rugs, hand blanket stitch is a traditional way to secure the layered shapes. These methods are described in American Patchwork & Quilting’s wool project guide.

- Construction: Is the wool woven or knit? Use a pattern suited to that construction.
- Weight and drape: Compare the fabric with the pattern’s recommendations; lightweight wool and coating wool serve different purposes.
- Edge treatment: Felted or boiled wool can suit designs with exposed edges. Do not assume an untreated woven wool will behave the same way.
- Exact material: Confirm whether the instructions call for wool felt, felted wool, or tightly woven wool cloth.
- Care: Check how the finished project should be cleaned before felting or washing the fabric.
Project collections are useful for ideas and technique guidance, not controlled comparisons of every wool fabric. For the cloth in hand, the pattern’s instructions and the fabric’s own care guidance are the most relevant specifications.
