In the makeover reported by TheCoolist and Homedit, brown wood cabinetry was painted a continuous navy blue across the upper cabinets, lower cabinets, sink area and pass-through. Small round knobs were replaced with long gold pulls. The counters, appliances, flooring, lighting, doors and cabinet boxes stayed in place, but the unified color and higher-contrast hardware changed the kitchen’s entire visual hierarchy.

What changed in the brown kitchen?
The starting room had brown wood cabinets, brown granite and matching cabinetry around the sink and pass-through. The makeover changed only the finish and hardware: navy paint covered every visible cabinet run, while gold pulls replaced the original round knobs.
That continuity is what makes the result read as built-in rather than piecemeal. A single dark color visually joins separate cabinet sections, and the solid finish makes the raised-panel borders easier to see. Gold hardware then creates a deliberate line of contrast against the navy, while the existing granite becomes a separate countertop band instead of competing with orange-brown cabinetry.
Homedit identifies the paint descriptively as “Sherwin-Williams Navy Blue” in Gallery Series 10 sheen. No Sherwin-Williams color number was published, so it should not be identified as Naval SW 6244 or In the Navy SW 9178 without confirmation.

Why does navy paint make the cabinets look more expensive?
Navy supplies the visual consistency that stained brown wood often lacks. When adjacent cabinet runs have the same deep color, the eye reads them as one designed composition. The darker surface also outlines rails, stiles and panel edges more clearly than a busy wood grain.
The effect depends on contrast, not navy alone. Gold pulls stand out against the dark doors and drawers, and the existing granite remains visible rather than being forced to match the cabinetry. This is a finish-focused renovation: it changes color, reflectivity and touch points without the cost or disruption of replacing cabinets.
How do I paint stained wood cabinets so the finish holds up?
Successful cabinet repainting is mostly preparation. Sherwin-Williams’ guidance calls for degreasing, an adhesion test, primer, fine sanding and controlled drying before hardware goes back on.

- Remove doors and hardware. Take off doors, drawer fronts, hinges and knobs or pulls. Painting them separately prevents buildup on moving parts, screw holes and edges.
- Degrease every surface. Clean cabinet frames, doors and drawer fronts with a suitable degreaser. Mask counters, backsplashes and cabinet interiors, or cover them with protective material.
- Test adhesion. Apply Extreme Bond Primer to a hidden spot first. If it adheres properly after drying, prime the remaining surfaces. If not, stop and improve cleaning or surface preparation before proceeding.
- Repair defects. Fill dents, chips and unwanted holes with suitable filler or putty. Let repairs dry, then sand them level.
- Prime and wait. Apply the primer evenly and allow at least 24 hours of drying time before sanding. Cabinet paint needs a stable, dust-free base.
- Sand and remove dust. Use very fine sandpaper, then wipe with a damp cloth so loose sanding residue does not become texture in the finish.
- Apply the topcoat in sequence. Brush recessed panels and detailed areas first. Follow with a mini roller on broad, flat sections to reduce visible brush marks. Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is offered in satin, semi-gloss and gloss; choose one sheen for all cabinet parts.
- Allow the finish to cure between stages. Sherwin-Williams specifies about 24–48 hours before a second coat and another 24–48 hours before reinstalling hardware.
Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel is designed for a smooth cabinet finish that resists yellowing and stains and can be wiped clean. Duration Home Interior Acrylic Latex is another cabinet-capable option listed by Sherwin-Williams, but the makeover coverage names the Navy Blue finish rather than a specific product formula.

Which hardware works with navy cabinets?
Long gold pulls reproduce the makeover’s strongest styling move: they provide a repeated horizontal accent on both doors and drawers. Before ordering, measure the distance between the centers of existing screw holes; that measurement determines whether new pulls can use the current holes or require filling and redrilling.
| Hardware choice | Visual effect | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Gold or brass pulls | High contrast and a warm, tailored accent | Best match for the documented makeover; verify hole spacing |
| Polished nickel | Brighter, cooler contrast | Works when appliances or plumbing already use a silvery finish |
| Aged brass | More muted and traditional | Softens the contrast while retaining warmth |
| Oil-rubbed bronze | Low-key, darker contrast | Blends more than gold and can make the navy feel moodier |
Sherwin-Williams presents knobs, pulls or a combination as finishing options. Keeping one repeated finish across the room usually produces the most custom-looking result.

Should I use one navy color or a two-tone scheme?
One navy color is the closest route to the reported makeover because it visually connects upper, lower and pass-through cabinetry. A two-tone plan can make a small kitchen feel lighter, but it introduces a new transition that must coordinate with the counters, backsplash and wall color.
- Choose one navy color when the goal is a continuous, furniture-like installation.
- Choose two tones when upper cabinets feel visually heavy or when you want the island or lowers to carry the stronger color.
- Sample first on a door or hidden section; the same navy can look substantially different under daylight, warm bulbs and evening lighting.
What sheen should I choose for kitchen cabinets?
Satin, semi-gloss and gloss are all listed by Sherwin-Williams for Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. Satin hides minor surface irregularities and gives a quieter look; semi-gloss adds easier visual definition and is a common compromise for cabinets; gloss reflects the most light and shows preparation flaws most readily. Whatever sheen you select, use it consistently on doors, drawer fronts and frames.
What safety precautions matter before sanding?
Old painted or previously refinished cabinets may contain lead-based coatings. Sanding or scraping can release hazardous dust or fumes. Sherwin-Williams advises appropriate containment, cleanup and a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator where lead is possible. Follow local rules for testing and disposal, and do not dry-sand an unknown old coating in an occupied kitchen.

Will painted cabinets stay perfect for years?
The makeover reports are visual editorial coverage, not a controlled durability test, so no service-life promise can be made. Daily contact, moisture, grease, cleaning chemicals and repeated impact at drawer edges will determine how the finish ages. Careful cleaning, complete drying and gentle use during the early curing period give the coating its best chance, but the long-term result remains dependent on preparation and household wear.
What does this makeover prove about cabinet replacement?
It demonstrates that a structural replacement is not the only way to create a more deliberate kitchen. If cabinet boxes and doors are sound, a coordinated paint color plus correctly sized hardware can change the room’s style while preserving the existing counters, appliances, floor and lighting. The trade-off is labor-intensive preparation and an outcome that depends heavily on adhesion, leveling and cure time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I paint cabinets that have a glossy clear coat?
Yes, but clean them thoroughly, test an adhesion primer in a hidden area and sand only as needed to create a suitable surface. Do not assume a new topcoat will bond to a slick finish without that preparation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How can I avoid visible brush marks on cabinet doors?
Use a quality brush for recessed details and a mini roller for flat areas, applying thin, even coats. Work in manageable sections and follow the product’s recoat interval rather than trying to build coverage in one heavy coat.
Can I reinstall cabinet doors the next day?
The Sherwin-Williams process guidance allows roughly 24–48 hours after the final coat before reinstalling hardware. That interval is different from full long-term curing, so protect freshly painted edges from hard contact during the early use period.
What if my new pulls do not match the old knob holes?
Fill the old holes with compatible filler, sand them flush after drying and drill new holes using a template. If you want to avoid patching, select pulls whose center-to-center measurement matches the existing holes.
