Sherwin-Williams still offers a credible long-term investment case, but the latest results show why investors must look past headline sales growth. The company is gaining share through its store network, professional relationships and coatings portfolio, while pricing and the Suvinil acquisition are doing much of the near-term lifting. In the third quarter of 2026, sales rose 7.9% to $6.86 billion, yet diluted earnings per share increased only 0.9% to $3.38. That gap makes volume growth, margins, cash generation and leverage more important than revenue alone.

What is the long-term investment thesis for Sherwin-Williams?
The core thesis is that Sherwin-Williams can compound earnings by combining distribution, customer relationships and specialized coatings. Its Paint Stores Group serves professional contractors through company-operated stores; Consumer Brands Group reaches retail and consumer channels; and Performance Coatings Group supplies construction, industrial, packaging and transportation customers in more than 120 countries.
This model can support share gains even when overall paint demand is muted. Company-operated stores provide local availability and technical support, while established relationships with contractors can make Sherwin-Williams a recurring supplier rather than a one-time purchase. The industrial and engineered-coatings exposure also diversifies the business beyond residential repainting.

Chief executive Heidi G. Petz described the third-quarter performance as evidence of “the resilience of our Company and the strength of our strategy in a challenging demand environment.” That statement is management’s assessment, not a guarantee that demand or margins will improve.
Are Sherwin-Williams’ recent sales gains coming from real demand?
Reported growth is positive, but investors need to separate price, mix, acquisitions and underlying volume. In the third quarter of 2026, all three operating segments increased sales:

| Segment | Q3 2026 sales growth | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Paint Stores Group | 4.7% | Continued growth in the professional distribution channel |
| Consumer Brands Group | 21.7% | Large contribution from the Suvinil business and related consolidation effects |
| Performance Coatings Group | 8.8% | Demand across industrial, packaging, transportation and construction markets |
Management said selling-price increases contributed a mid-single-digit percentage to sales growth. That means a substantial portion of the reported increase did not necessarily represent more gallons sold or more customer projects. The key confirmation for a durable growth story is sustained low-single-digit volume growth, new-account wins and higher share of wallet after pricing comparisons normalize.

Suvinil is an important example of why sales and earnings must be read together. Consumer Brands sales rose 21.7%, but reported segment profit declined 7.1%; adjusted segment profit fell 4.4%. Suvinil is adding revenue while diluting margins and increasing selling, general and administrative expenses and debt-related costs. Investors should therefore evaluate the acquisition on eventual margin recovery and cash generation, not sales growth alone.
How are margins and earnings holding up?
Earnings are growing more slowly than revenue. Consolidated diluted EPS rose 0.9% to $3.38 in Q3 2026, despite the 7.9% sales increase. Gross margin faced pressure from raw-material and supply-chain costs, product mix and Suvinil dilution. Valspar amortization and restructuring charges also affect comparability, so reported EPS and adjusted EPS should not be treated as interchangeable measures.
For 2026, management’s guidance calls for sales growth in the mid-to-high single digits and adjusted EPS of $11.85 to $12.15. Guidance is a target range, not a certainty, and management has indicated that muted demand could continue into 2027. A stronger long-term setup would require cost actions to offset inflation while volume and productivity improve without relying on additional price increases.

Is Sherwin-Williams’ dividend safe?
The dividend has a substantial record of increases and is supported by significant operating cash flow. Investor-relations materials report 47 consecutive years of dividend increases and a 6.9% five-year adjusted EPS compound annual growth rate, measured through December 31, 2025.
Cash returns were large in 2026: during the first nine months, Sherwin-Williams generated $2.59 billion of operating cash and returned $2.98 billion through dividends and share repurchases. For 2025, the company reported $23.57 billion in net sales and $3.45 billion in net operating cash.
Those figures support the payout, but they also show that capital returns exceeded operating cash generation in the first nine months of 2026. Investors should monitor free cash flow after capital spending, debt reduction and acquisition costs rather than relying on the dividend-increase streak by itself.

What are the main risks to SHW stock?
The most important risks are linked to costs, demand, acquisitions and financial exposure:

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Input-cost inflation: Raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging can compress gross margin before price increases catch up.
- Weak end markets: Residential, commercial, industrial, packaging and transportation demand can soften at different points in the cycle.
- Suvinil integration: The acquisition may continue to dilute margins, raise SG&A and increase debt-related costs if synergies take longer than expected.
- Interest rates and leverage: Higher interest expense can reduce earnings and restrict flexibility for repurchases or acquisitions.
- Foreign exchange and trade policy: International operations expose results to currency movements, tariffs and changing trade rules.
- Legal and operational exposure: Environmental and lead-paint litigation, regulation, cybersecurity incidents and supply-chain disruptions can create unexpected costs.
- Credit-market pressure: A weaker financing environment could make refinancing or new investment more expensive.
These risks are why management’s forward-looking statements caution that actual results may differ materially from expectations.

Sherwin-Williams remains a quality compounder candidate when distribution advantages translate into volume, margins recover and cash returns remain covered. The current evidence supports resilience, but investors should demand proof that acquisition-related revenue and price increases are converting into durable earnings and cash flow.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much of Sherwin-Williams’ 2026 growth came from acquisitions?
The disclosed third-quarter figures identify Suvinil as a significant contributor to Consumer Brands growth, but they do not provide a single consolidated percentage separating acquisition growth from organic growth. Investors should use segment commentary and organic-volume disclosures in subsequent filings rather than assume all reported growth is acquisition-driven.
Why can Sherwin-Williams sales rise while profit falls in a segment?
A segment can sell more products but earn less if raw materials, freight, labor and selling expenses rise faster than prices, or if a newly acquired business carries lower margins. That pattern occurred in Consumer Brands during Q3 2026, when sales increased 21.7% while reported segment profit declined 7.1%.
What is the difference between Sherwin-Williams reported EPS and adjusted EPS?
Reported EPS follows accounting rules and includes items such as Valspar amortization and restructuring charges. Adjusted EPS excludes specified items to improve period-to-period comparability, but it is a non-GAAP measure and should be reconciled with the company’s reported results.
Does a 47-year dividend-growth streak eliminate dividend risk?
No. The streak demonstrates a long history of increases, but future payments still depend on operating cash flow, debt obligations, capital spending and board decisions. A period of weak demand or elevated integration costs could limit repurchases or slow the pace of increases even if the dividend is maintained.
