Sherwin-Williams has a substantial company-operated store network that could make buying paint and getting job support convenient for professional painters. But its store count and reported sales growth do not, by themselves, prove that the network locks in contractors, outperforms rival channels, or makes SHW stock undervalued. The distribution moat is plausible; calling it underappreciated requires evidence about customer behavior, network economics and the expectations already reflected in the share price.
How many Sherwin-Williams stores are there?
Sherwin-Williams said it operated more than 5,400 stores and branches in its January 29, 2026 full-year results release. Its year-end 2025 segment table gives the more specific counts: 4,853 Paint Stores Group stores and 317 Performance Coatings Group branches. Those two figures total 5,170; the company also reports a separate Consumer Brands Group store count, so the two segment figures should not be mistaken for the entire network.
The distinction matters. The 4,853 Paint Stores Group locations are the most relevant count for assessing the specialty retail channel that serves professional painters. The larger “more than 5,400” figure includes stores and branches across the company, not just paint stores serving contractors.

How does Sherwin-Williams sell paint to contractors?
The company says Sherwin-Williams-branded products are sold exclusively through its company-operated stores and branches. Its other brands use a broader set of channels, including mass merchandisers, home centers, independent paint dealers, hardware stores, automotive retailers and industrial distributors. This is a distinct channel strategy: the flagship Sherwin-Williams brand is tied to an owned network, while other brands can reach customers through third parties.
For a painter, an owned specialty store could offer more than a place to buy a can of paint. A nearby location may make it easier to get paint and supplies between jobs, discuss product selection, arrange color matching and seek product support. A dense local network could also help build familiarity and recurring relationships with sales staff. These are reasonable ways a network might create value, but the company’s financial disclosures do not establish how often those outcomes occur or whether they are better than what rival suppliers provide.

What did the Paint Stores Group contribute in 2025?
Paint Stores Group was Sherwin-Williams’ largest business segment by sales in 2025. The company reported the following full-year figures in its January 29, 2026 results release:

Paint Stores Group net sales were $13.188 billion in 2024 and $13.606 billion in 2025; segment profit was $2.903 billion and $3.062 billion, respectively. The group’s full-year same-store sales growth was 1.7%. Same-store sales growth describes sales at the company’s comparable store base; it is not, on its own, a measure of market-share gains or proof that the distribution network caused the increase.

Is Sherwin-Williams gaining share?
The reported figures show growth, not market-share change. Sherwin-Williams’ consolidated net sales increased 2.1% in 2025. Diluted earnings per share fell 2.7% to $10.26, while adjusted diluted EPS increased 0.9% to $11.43. Management said Paint Stores Group growth was led by protective and marine, residential repaint and commercial. Those are management’s descriptions of the drivers; the disclosures do not isolate how much growth came from store availability, pricing, volume, product mix or other factors.
The latest quarterly figure in the available company results is from the second quarter of 2026, released July 28, 2026: Paint Stores Group same-store sales increased 4.2% in that quarter. That is a useful update on the group’s sales trend, but it does not establish that Sherwin-Williams took share from competitors or that its stores caused the increase.

In the full-year release, CEO Heidi G. described the company’s “Success by Design” approach as having resulted in record consolidated net sales and record adjusted diluted net income per share. That is management’s characterization of the company’s results, not an independent assessment of its competitive position.

A large network is an asset only if it helps Sherwin-Williams win and retain business on attractive terms. To test whether the stores create a durable advantage with professional painters, investors would need evidence connecting the network to customer behavior and returns—not just a location count.

- Contractor retention and spending: Does Sherwin-Williams keep professional customers over time, and does it capture a larger share of their paint and supply spending?
- Service and availability: Can painters obtain the right products, color support and technical help more reliably or quickly than through competing stores, dealers or delivery channels?
- Local competitive density: Does Sherwin-Williams have meaningfully better coverage in the markets that matter, compared with the combined reach of rival suppliers and independent dealers?
- Network economics: Do the stores generate returns that justify their labor, real estate, inventory and other operating costs, including in weaker local markets?
The official company figures cited here do not provide competitor-by-competitor store density, contractor retention, delivery comparisons, share of wallet or branch-level returns. Without that evidence, the network’s size is clear, but the degree to which it creates customer lock-in or superior economics is not.
Is the moat underappreciated—and is the stock undervalued?
“Underappreciated” is an investment claim, not a synonym for “large” or “high quality.” A distribution network could be strategically valuable yet already reflected in the stock price; alternatively, investors could underestimate its contribution if it generates durable customer relationships and strong returns that are not apparent in headline growth. Deciding between those possibilities requires both evidence about the network’s incremental economics and a comparison with market expectations.
The company’s 2026 investor overview lists $14.3 billion of five-year net operating cash, 5.6% average same-store sales growth over five years and 47 consecutive years of dividend increases, all as of December 31, 2025. These are issuer-presented company metrics, not independent proof that the pro-painter channel is a moat. The figures cited here also do not establish current valuation multiples or what performance the share price already assumes, so they cannot support a conclusion that SHW is undervalued.
The evidence therefore supports a measured verdict: Sherwin-Williams operates a very large owned channel, and Paint Stores Group is a substantial, growing business. Its network could help professional painters through availability, expertise and convenience, but demonstrating a durable advantage—and that the advantage is underappreciated—requires comparative customer, service and return data alongside a current valuation analysis.
