Short answer: Choose Sherwin-Williams when coverage, washability, durability, or a premium finish matters more than the lowest upfront price. Choose Valspar when your budget, Lowe’s availability, or a capable value-tier formula is the deciding factor. Neither brand wins every project: compare an interior product with another interior product, an exterior product with another exterior product, and similar performance tiers. A premium Valspar line can be a better buy than an entry-level Sherwin-Williams line, while a premium Sherwin-Williams coating can justify its higher price in a high-traffic or demanding setting.

What is the difference between Sherwin-Williams and Valspar?
Sherwin-Williams and Valspar are separate paint brands within the Sherwin-Williams portfolio, with different retail channels and product ranges. Sherwin-Williams says its branded coatings are sold through more than 4,900 company-owned stores. Valspar is positioned as a channel-partner brand and is commonly encountered at Lowe’s. That distinction affects advice, color help, tinting support, and convenience as much as the can’s label.
Both brands sell interior, exterior, and specialty coatings. Their lines vary in pigment, binder, sheen, surface suitability, and performance claims, so “brand versus brand” is only a starting point. A fair comparison pairs products designed for the same surface and exposure—for example, an interior wall paint in eggshell against another interior wall paint in eggshell.
Which paint covers better and lasts longer?
Independent comparisons generally favor Sherwin-Williams for hide, durability, and resistance to wear, while Valspar usually wins on initial price and retail access. The result can reverse when a premium Valspar product is compared with a lower Sherwin-Williams tier, or when poor preparation forces extra coats of either brand.
Coverage and hide
Coverage is the ability to conceal the previous color and create an even film with the stated number of coats. Sherwin-Williams comparison materials evaluate coverage and hide alongside appearance and application ease across products such as Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint, and Cashmere. Those are manufacturer comparisons, not a single laboratory ranking of every gallon sold.
Valspar 4000 Interior Paint is a documented value-oriented example. Valspar states that the prepared-wall-and-ceiling formula offers good hide and coverage, with an expected spread rate of 350–450 square feet per gallon. Actual coverage changes with porosity, texture, color change, application method, and the painter’s technique. Treat the label range as a planning estimate, not a guarantee that one coat will cover every surface.
Washability, scuffs, and scratches
For hallways, children’s rooms, kitchens, and other high-contact areas, washability and film toughness often matter more than the first-gallon price. Sherwin-Williams’ comparison framework includes washability, moisture resistance, durability, and ease of application. Independent reviewers commonly describe its higher-end lines as more resistant to chipping and scratching than comparable value paints.
Bob Vila reported a professional opinion from Improovy CEO Andre Kazimierski that Sherwin-Williams’ higher-end paints remain chip- and scratch-free longer than Valspar. That is an attributed expert opinion, not an independently reproduced test, so use it as context rather than a guaranteed service-life difference.

Weather and fade resistance
Exterior siding, doors, and trim face ultraviolet light, rain, temperature swings, and repeated wetting. Sherwin-Williams comparison materials assess moisture or weather resistance and fade resistance by product. Valspar also sells exterior lines, but the relevant evidence is always the exact exterior formula and its label—not the interior performance of Valspar 4000 or another unrelated product. Check substrate approval, sheen, mildew guidance, and recoat instructions before buying.
Is Sherwin-Williams worth the extra cost?
It can be, when a better finish, fewer coats, easier cleaning, or longer wear prevents repainting and touch-up work. It is less compelling when the room has low traffic, the color change is minor, preparation is excellent, and a suitable Valspar tier meets the label requirements.
There is no reliable universal gallon price for either brand. Price changes with formula, sheen, container size, promotion, retailer, and geography. A higher shelf price also does not automatically produce a lower project cost: compare the estimated gallons, number of coats, primer needs, labor, and expected repainting interval.
Bob Vila reported that Sherwin-Williams ranked first for interior-paint customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Paint Satisfaction Study. This is a secondary report of that study; it should not be treated as a direct quotation from the J.D. Power publication without checking the primary report.

Valspar is a sensible choice when cost and Lowe’s access are important, provided you select a line rated for the surface and wear level. Its portfolio ranges from value products to more feature-rich formulas, so “Valspar” alone does not tell you how washable, stain-resistant, or durable a specific can will be.
What Valspar 4000 offers
Valspar describes 4000 Interior Paint as a zero-VOC coating for prepared interior walls and ceilings. The product page lists good hide and coverage, fast recoat time, spray/brush/roll application, 350–450 square feet per gallon coverage, and one- and five-gallon sizes. It is sold through Lowe’s and includes a color-replacement guarantee. Verify the current can and retailer terms because guarantees and availability can change.
Those are product-specific claims. Zero VOC, for example, applies to the stated formula and does not mean every Valspar product has the same composition or performance. Match the sheen and color system to the room, and follow the preparation and ventilation directions on the current label.

Where can you buy each brand, and what support should you expect?
Sherwin-Williams-branded paint is primarily sold through Sherwin-Williams stores. Company-owned locations provide access to that brand’s tinting, product information, and professional-oriented support. The company identifies Purdy brushes and rollers as an applicator brand in its architectural-coatings portfolio, making them a relevant accessory option when you buy through that channel.
Valspar is widely available at Lowe’s, and Lowe’s also carries HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams products. Store inventory, bases, colors, and promotions vary by location. If you need a particular sheen or color immediately, check the local listing or call before driving; a nearby retailer may stock only selected lines or container sizes.
How do the named product lines compare?
The table below summarizes documented positioning, not a universal performance ranking. Always read the current technical data and label for the exact color and sheen.
| Product or line | Intended use or channel | Documented features or evaluation areas | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sherwin-Williams Emerald | Interior product line | Sherwin-Williams comparison materials evaluate coverage/hide, appearance, washability, moisture resistance, and application ease. | Surface approval, sheen, coat instructions, and current price. |
| Sherwin-Williams Duration Home | Interior product line | Included in the same manufacturer comparison of practical performance characteristics. | Whether its specified features fit your room and color change. |
| Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint | Interior product line | Evaluated by the manufacturer for hide, appearance, washability, moisture resistance, and application ease. | Exact interior or exterior version and substrate approval. |
| Sherwin-Williams Cashmere | Interior product line | Included in Sherwin-Williams’ interior comparison materials. | Sheen, spread-rate instructions, and number of coats. |
| Valspar 4000 Interior Paint | Prepared interior walls and ceilings; commonly sold at Lowe’s | Zero VOC; good hide and coverage; fast recoat; spray, brush, or roll; 350–450 sq. ft. per gallon; one- and five-gallon sizes; color-replacement guarantee. | Current label, sheen, color, and guarantee terms. |
| HGTV Home Infinity Interior Paint & Primer | Consumer line at Lowe’s | Catalog positioning includes scuff and scratch resistance, stain repellence, and one-coat coverage. | Whether the one-coat claim applies to your color and prepared surface. |
| HGTV Home Ovation Plus Interior Paint & Primer | Consumer line at Lowe’s | Catalog states zero VOC, even application, a lasting finish, and hiding of previous colors. | Exact sheen and current label conditions for hide and recoat. |
| HGTV Home specialty products | Lowe’s consumer range | Catalog lists Showcase, Spec Right, cabinet and furniture, door and trim, high-gloss, ceiling, and color-sample products; selected lines carry one-coat, stain, scuff, scratch, or zero-VOC claims. | That the product is intended for your substrate rather than a general wall coating. |
Which brand is best for each project?
Interior walls and ceilings
Start with the room’s traffic and the existing color. For a guest room or lightly used ceiling, a suitable Valspar line can offer good value. For a busy hallway, playroom, kitchen, or rental turnover where repeated cleaning matters, compare a washable Sherwin-Williams line with a Valspar product that makes an equivalent washability or stain claim. Use ceiling paint for ceilings when the label calls for it; a wall formula’s sheen and touch-up behavior may not be ideal overhead.
High-traffic rooms
Prioritize washability, scuff resistance, and sheen before choosing a brand. Sherwin-Williams is the safer starting point when the budget supports a premium film, but check HGTV Home Infinity’s documented scuff, scratch, and stain positioning as a Lowe’s-accessible alternative. Do not assume a one-coat claim eliminates the need for a second coat over a strong color, patchy substrate, or porous repair.
Exterior siding
Choose an exterior formula approved for the siding material and local exposure. Weather resistance and fade resistance depend on the coating, color, surface condition, and climate. Sherwin-Williams’ exterior range may justify its cost when the finish must withstand severe exposure, but a Valspar exterior line can be appropriate when its label matches the substrate and your maintenance plan.
Doors, trim, and cabinets
These surfaces need a harder, smoother film and often a different sheen than walls. Use a product specifically labeled for doors and trim, cabinets, or furniture. HGTV Home’s Lowe’s catalog includes dedicated cabinet-and-furniture and door-and-trim products. Do not substitute a general ceiling or wall paint simply because the color matches.

Low-odor or VOC-sensitive projects
Look for the zero-VOC statement on the exact product. Valspar 4000 and HGTV Home Ovation Plus are documented examples with zero-VOC claims, but neither claim automatically extends to every sheen, tint base, or product in the portfolio. Follow ventilation and curing instructions, especially in bedrooms, nurseries, and occupied homes.
How should you compare two cans fairly?
Use this process at the store or while comparing technical data sheets. It prevents a premium interior product from being judged against a bargain ceiling paint or an exterior coating.
- Define the surface. Record whether it is drywall, previously painted plaster, wood, metal, masonry, siding, a cabinet, or a ceiling. Confirm that both products are approved for it.
- Match exposure. Compare interior with interior and exterior with exterior. Note sunlight, rain, humidity, condensation, kitchen grease, children, pets, and cleaning frequency.
- Match sheen. Flat, matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and high-gloss reflect light differently and clean differently. Compare the same sheen whenever possible.
- Read the performance claims. Put hide, spread rate, washability, scuff or scratch resistance, stain repellence, moisture resistance, fade resistance, and recoat time in a written list. Mark which claims are manufacturer statements rather than independent test results.
- Calculate project cost. Estimate the surface area, divide by the label’s coverage range, account for the stated number of coats, and add primer or specialty products. Use the same container size and local price date for both calculations.
- Check preparation requirements. Look for cleaning, sanding, caulking, patching, mildew treatment, and drying instructions. Preparation often determines whether the advertised hide and durability are achievable.
- Confirm availability. Make sure the store has enough of the same base and, when possible, the same batch. A replacement can may vary slightly in color or sheen.
- Save the label information. Photograph the can, sheen, color formula, batch information, and recoat instructions. This makes future touch-ups and warranty questions easier.
How much does the better value really cost?
Think in total project cost rather than price per gallon. A less expensive paint can lose its advantage if it requires an additional coat, covers fewer square feet on a porous wall, or needs an earlier repaint. Conversely, paying for a premium coating in a low-use room may add expense without a meaningful benefit.
| Cost question | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|
| How many gallons are needed? | Coverage varies by product and surface; Valspar 4000’s stated range is 350–450 sq. ft. per gallon, but texture and porosity can reduce it. |
| How many coats are realistic? | Strong color changes, repairs, and uneven absorption can require more coats than a marketing claim suggests. |
| Is primer required? | Bare drywall, stains, glossy areas, and repairs may need a compatible primer even when a can is labeled paint and primer. |
| What is the cost of downtime? | Fast recoat time can shorten a project, but only when temperature, humidity, and application thickness meet the label conditions. |
| What is the maintenance burden? | A washable, durable film can reduce touch-ups in busy spaces; this benefit matters less in rooms that are rarely used. |
What preparation and application mistakes cause disappointing results?
Painting over contamination
Dust, grease, soap residue, chalking, and mildew interfere with adhesion and create uneven sheen. Clean the surface using the method specified for the substrate, let it dry fully, and remove loose or failing paint before coating.
Ignoring porosity and repairs
New drywall, joint compound, bare wood, and patched spots absorb paint differently from surrounding paint. Spot-priming or priming the full surface can prevent flashing, where repairs remain visible after the finish dries.
Using the wrong applicator
Roller nap, brush type, and spray settings affect texture and coverage. Follow the product’s spray, brush, or roll instructions; Valspar 4000, for example, lists all three application methods. Quality applicators, including Purdy brushes and rollers identified in Sherwin-Williams’ portfolio, can make edge work and a consistent film easier, but they cannot correct an unsuitable product or unprepared surface.

Applying a second coat too soon
“Fast recoat” is conditional. Temperature, humidity, ventilation, film thickness, and color can change drying time. Recoating before the first film has hardened can cause lifting, drag marks, or uneven sheen. Use the current label’s minimum recoat time and extend it when conditions are cool or damp.

Assuming every claim is universal
One-coat, zero-VOC, stain, scuff, and scratch statements apply to named products and stated conditions. They do not automatically transfer to another sheen, color base, or brand. Keep the can and technical information until the project is complete.
What is the practical verdict?
Choose Sherwin-Williams when premium coverage, cleanability, durability, or a demanding exterior finish can repay the higher purchase price. Compare the appropriate Emerald, Duration Home, SuperPaint, Cashmere, or exterior line for the substrate rather than selecting by brand name alone.
Choose Valspar when the lower initial cost, Lowe’s access, or a specific value formula fits your project. Valspar 4000 is a documented zero-VOC interior option with stated coverage and application details; other Valspar lines should be judged by their own labels. If you want Sherwin-Williams-associated consumer products at Lowe’s, evaluate the specific HGTV Home line and its feature claims.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Sherwin-Williams own Valspar?
They are distinct brands in the Sherwin-Williams portfolio. Their retail channels and product catalogs remain different, so a Valspar can at Lowe’s should not be assumed to have the same formula or service support as a Sherwin-Williams-branded coating sold in a company store.
Are zero-VOC paints completely odor-free?
No. A zero-VOC label describes the product’s stated volatile-organic-compound claim; odor can still come from other ingredients, colorants, or the curing process. Ventilate the room and follow the current label even when a formula is marketed as zero VOC.
Can one coat really cover a different dark color?
Sometimes, but the result depends on the color change, surface uniformity, porosity, application thickness, and the exact product claim. Plan for a second coat if the test area shows variation rather than relying on the headline claim.
