Shutterstock’s Composition Aware Search was a historical visual-search experiment designed to find images by both subject and approximate layout. Users could place keywords on a canvas to indicate where subjects should appear, and could request copy space for text. The sources reviewed do not confirm whether that same canvas-based feature is accessible today.
What Shutterstock’s Composition Aware Search did
Standard image search starts with subjects or concepts. Composition Aware Search added a layout constraint: users could indicate where those subjects should appear in the image.
Shutterstock’s October 2017 announcement described entering one or more keywords, placing them on a canvas, and moving them to show the desired positions. Its example was wine and cheese arranged on opposite sides. The company said the search considered both the terms and their spatial placement. This describes the intended feature, not independently measured performance. Read Shutterstock’s feature announcement.
How the canvas search worked
- Enter one or more subjects as separate search terms.
- Place the terms on the visual canvas.
- Move each term to indicate where that subject should appear.
- Add and position copy space if the design needs room for text.
- Review the results and adjust the requested layout as needed.
- Choose and license an image after checking it in the intended design.
Shutterstock later renamed the feature Composition Search and described it as part of Shutterstock Showcase. The company’s release describes the canvas as a way to search for a specific layout of objects. Read Shutterstock’s release about Showcase and its search tools.

Why composition matters when choosing a stock image
A stock photo can show the right subject but still be difficult to use if the layout does not suit the design. For example, a headline may need open space on one side while the main subject sits on the other. Searching for layout as well as subject was intended to help address that need.
Composition and copy-space requirements can matter for website headers, advertisements, email banners, social-media designs, presentations, and covers. The selected image still needs to work with the actual text, format, and crop.
Copy space and text placement
Copy space is relatively open image area where a headline or other text can be placed. Shutterstock described the related Copy Space tool as letting users look for available text space and specify its location and amount. It was a related Showcase tool; that historical description does not establish that it is available now.

What “spatially aware” meant
In its 2017 announcement, Shutterstock said the system used computer vision, natural-language processing, and information-retrieval techniques. The company described its model as learning about both the objects in an image and where they were. These are the company’s descriptions; the sources reviewed do not provide an independent benchmark or measured productivity result.

Composition search compared with other search inputs
| Search approach | Input | Constraint expressed | Availability evidence in the reviewed sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composition Aware Search / Composition Search | Keywords placed on a spatial canvas | Subjects in requested approximate positions; copy-space needs could also be expressed | Historically documented in Shutterstock announcements; current public access is not confirmed |
| Keyword search | Text keywords | Subject or concept, without a spatial canvas in the described input | Listed in Shutterstock’s August 2025 help overview |
| Reverse image search | An uploaded reference image | A visual reference rather than a requested object layout | Listed in Shutterstock’s August 2025 help overview |
This is a comparison of documented inputs and evidence, not a ranking of search performance. Shutterstock’s current help overview describes keyword search, filters, AI-powered result ordering for active subscribers, and reverse image search, but does not list Composition Search. That omission does not prove the feature was discontinued; the reviewed sources simply do not confirm current public access.
Is Shutterstock’s original composition tool still available?
The sources reviewed do not establish that the 2017–2018 canvas-based interface remains available to consumers today. Shutterstock’s August 2025 help overview lists other search options but does not mention Composition Search. Avoid assuming either that the historical interface is still accessible or that it has been discontinued. See Shutterstock’s help material on image search.

What to do when you need a particular layout
- Describe the composition in your search. Include the subject, its desired side or area, and where you need room for text. Current search options may not interpret these instructions like the historical canvas did.
- Try layout terms. Phrases such as “copy space left,” “person on right,” or “room for text” can communicate the desired arrangement, but the sources reviewed do not establish how consistently they work.
- Check current search options. Consult Shutterstock’s help material for tools it currently documents rather than assuming the old canvas is available.
- Test the final crop. Preview the image with the intended text and format; search results alone cannot show whether the finished layout will work.
Licensing still matters
Shutterstock’s original announcement said users could license and edit images found through the tool. Search results themselves do not grant permission to use an image. Before publication, check that the license covers the intended use and confirm any applicable restrictions. The reviewed sources do not establish whether a particular current subscription plan includes Composition Search.

Composition Aware Search was designed to let users search for stock images by both subject and approximate placement. Shutterstock announced it in beta in October 2017, later called it Composition Search, and associated it with Showcase. Its historical documentation is not evidence that the same canvas remains publicly available today.
