“The most realistic AI image generator I’ve tried” was Tom’s Guide writer Ryan Morrison’s personal verdict after a hands-on test of Freepik Mystic in 2024—not a controlled ranking. In 2026, the available evidence still does not establish an independent winner for realism between Mystic and Midjourney, whose current default is V8.2.
Mystic is worth evaluating for your own image-making needs, but compare the specific model choices and settings you would use. Photographic plausibility, prompt fidelity, style, editing controls, workflow, and cost are separate questions.

Morrison’s Tom’s Guide review tested Mystic with a small set of varied prompts, including:
- A cat playing a piano
- A person with a floating head
- A city on a giant turtle
- A woman with hair made of fire
- A robot painting a starry sky
- A floating island with a waterfall
The reviewer praised elements such as lighting and interpretation in some results. But repeated attempts did not produce the requested floating-head effect. That is useful qualitative evidence: an image can look convincing while missing a central instruction.

The review was a hands-on demonstration, not a controlled comparison with Midjourney. It did not establish a universal ranking or a reproducible head-to-head result. Its headline’s phrase “the most realistic AI image generator I’ve tried” is explicitly a personal impression.

What Mystic is—and what the name means now
Mystic is an image-generation option within the platform formerly known as Freepik, now branded Magnific. The current platform offers multiple models and tools; Mystic is not one single, fixed configuration. Freepik’s API documentation describes choices including realism, super_real, editorial_portraits, fluid, zen, and flexible, as well as controls for resolution, aspect ratio, references, and engine settings.

These are documented options and vendor descriptions, not independent proof of superiority over Midjourney. A meaningful comparison should name the Mystic choice and settings used, rather than treating all Mystic outputs as interchangeable.

“Realistic” is not one capability
Photographic plausibility and prompt fidelity are different qualities. A model may create convincing materials and lighting while omitting a requested object or getting the relationships between objects wrong.
When comparing outputs, assess these dimensions separately:
- Photographic plausibility: skin, materials, lighting, shadows, perspective, and scene coherence.
- Prompt fidelity: whether the specified objects, relationships, and unusual details appear.
- Style and aesthetic control: whether you can reach the intended look consistently.
- Editing and iteration: whether references, variations, and other controls help correct defects.
- Output and workflow: image dimensions, export, upscaling, and surrounding platform tools.
- Cost for your use: plan price, credit use, included models, limits, and commercial terms.
The floating-head failure described in the 2024 review is a reminder not to confuse surface realism with accurate instruction-following.

- Use the same prompt text in both services where possible.
- Record each service’s model or version, settings, output dimensions, and test date.
- Use several prompt categories, such as a portrait, a product or material, architecture, a complex scene, and an unusual instruction.
- Generate multiple samples per prompt rather than relying on one result.
- Compare outputs blind where practical, and score photographic plausibility and prompt fidelity separately.
- Record failures and editing or iteration needed, not just the strongest result.
- Check current plan details and compare the cost of the workflow you actually need.
Do not present the results as a general ranking unless the test supports that conclusion; model versions and settings can change what each service produces.
Freepik Mystic versus Midjourney in 2026
Midjourney’s official documentation says V8.2 became the default version on July 24, 2026, and describes its focus as aesthetics, image quality, and personalization. The documentation does not compare V8.2 with Mystic. A 2024 hands-on impression therefore cannot establish which service performs better today.
