Danny Huynh’s creations turn small radio-controlled vehicles into dystopian scenes in motion: figures steer, work the throttle, and sometimes lean into turns alongside the vehicle. The “Mad Max” description is an aesthetic comparison, not evidence of an official connection to the film franchise.
What makes Huynh’s RC builds different?
Many are extensively customized off-the-shelf RC cars, rather than purpose-built full-size vehicles. Their impact comes from pairing a compact vehicle with a character whose movements are coordinated with the controls. Hackaday’s 2021 feature on Huynh’s dystopian animatronics describes hand and foot movements linked to steering and throttle; on some motorcycle builds, the rider leans with the turns.
The result is more than a static miniature: the figure appears to participate in driving. The reporting also compares the work’s look to post-apocalyptic settings such as Mad Max and Fallout. Those are visual references, not confirmed franchise affiliations.

How do the figures move?
Hackaday reports that servos and mechanical linkages actuate character movement. The controls for the vehicle and figure are coordinated so that hands or feet respond to steering or throttle input. On motorcycle models, the mechanism can also make the rider lean into a turn.
Wiring and electronics are concealed beneath paint or bodywork, keeping the visible scene from reading like an exposed mechanism. The vehicles are electric; an audio module is sometimes added to simulate engine noise. The feature does not identify specific servo models, radios, batteries, sound modules, or a complete parts list, so these descriptions explain the broad approach rather than a verified recipe.

What is the Drift Queen?
One example is Drift Queen, a Humvee-based build described by Blackbird Auto Journal in its 2018 feature, “Custom Drift Machine”. The standard Humvee RC car’s body shell was replaced with a cage, with an opening jaw at the front and a seated manga-like figure whose hand is mounted on an extended throttle.
Blackbird estimates this particular model at 8 to 10 inches long. That is an estimate for Drift Queen alone, not a standard scale or a measurement applicable to Huynh’s other builds. The article also says Huynh had not disclosed the step-by-step transformation, so this example should not be treated as a published build guide.

What to consider when planning a similar project
The reporting supports a broad project outline, not an exact parts list. If you want to explore the same kind of idea, begin by thinking about how the vehicle and animated figure will fit and work together.
- Choose a platform with room to work. Compare vehicle size and available space for a seated figure, servos, linkages, wiring, and any added electronics.
- Check the drivetrain and controls. Steering and throttle need to be accessible to the mechanisms that move the character. The available features do not establish a particular drivetrain or control configuration for Huynh’s builds.
- Plan the movement. Decide which figure actions should respond to steering or throttle, then consider how servos and linkages could produce them.
- Treat engine sound as optional. An audio module is reported on some builds, but sound is not necessary to the core idea of coordinated vehicle and figure movement.
These are general design considerations inferred from the described builds, not a tested parts recommendation. The features do not name products or provide model-to-model comparisons, so they cannot establish that a particular vehicle or generic kit will recreate Huynh’s work.
