Smiley Faces: What They Mean, How Emoji Differ, and Where They Came From

“Smiley face” can mean a typed emoticon, a Unicode emoji, or a branded graphic. Their meaning depends on context, and survey faces are not automatically interpreted alike.

A “smiley face” can mean a typed expression such as :-), a Unicode emoji such as 🙂, or a designed graphic associated with a brand. They look related, but they are different kinds of things—and none has one guaranteed meaning in every message or survey.

  • An emoticon: a face or gesture made from text characters, such as ;-), which is read using punctuation and symbols.
  • An emoji: a pictograph used inline in text. Unicode defines emoji as “A colorful pictograph that can be used inline in text.” It may be represented by an image, an encoded character, or a sequence of encoded characters.
  • A graphic icon: a drawn or branded smiley image. A company’s particular artwork may be proprietary even when the general idea of a smiling face is not the same thing as that design.

Unicode Technical Standard #51, Version 18.0, dated 2026-08-28, defines emoji and emoticons and describes how emoji characters and sequences are encoded and presented. In a broader sense, “emoticon” can also be used for emoji showing facial expressions or gestures, but distinguishing typed emoticons from pictographic emoji is useful in ordinary discussion. What do smiley faces communicate in messages?

A smiley can add a cue about facial expression, mood, or tone to a short written message. Unicode puts the role this way: “In social media, emoji make up for the lack of gestures, facial expressions, and intonation that are found in speech.” But it also cautions: “Emoji do not have the grammar or vocabulary to substitute for written language.” A smiley can supplement words; it cannot reliably do the work of a full explanation.

Meaning depends on the surrounding words, the relationship between writer and reader, and the situation. Unicode notes that emoji can introduce ambiguity by allowing a writer to convey several possible concepts at once. A smiley therefore should not be treated as a symbol with one universally fixed interpretation.

Why can the same emoji look different on different devices?

Emoji may be rendered as images by different platforms, and designs can vary between implementations. Unicode specifies encoded characters and sequences, including default text or emoji presentation, modifiers, and design guidance intended to improve interoperability. Its guidance does not mean that every device draws an identical picture. The standard is versioned, and its recommendations and character data can change as characters are added or common practice evolves. The cited standard is Version 18.0, dated 2026-08-28. For a reader, the practical distinction is between the underlying encoded character or sequence and the particular image a platform displays. When precision matters, especially in instructions or a survey, do not assume that everyone sees exactly the same design or reads it the same way.

When did smiley faces and emoji become popular?

There is no single start date for all smiley faces: typed emoticons, branded graphics, Japanese mobile-phone emoji, and Unicode encoding have different histories.

Japanese carrier emoji and Unicode

Unicode’s history of emoji notes that emoji were available on Japanese mobile phones in 1999. Japanese carriers had partly overlapping sets and incompatible text encodings, creating problems when messages moved between systems. Emoji characters explicitly intended as emoji entered Unicode 5.2 in 2009; 608 remaining characters from the carrier set were added in 2010, with Unicode 6.0. Earlier emoji use also drew on characters that already existed. These are milestones in mobile emoji and standardization, not the birth dates of every smiley face. Unicode Technical Standard #51

The Smiley Company’s account

The Smiley Company presents a separate, company-authored history of its branded graphics. It says Nicolas Loufrani, its CEO and Creative Director, created three-dimensional Smiley® icons in 1997 and describes a mobile-phone licensing partnership with Alcatel in 1996. In a company interview, Loufrani argues that the familiar account of one person in Japan inventing emojis in 1999 is an oversimplification. That is his and the company’s position, not a conclusion established by Unicode’s technical history. The company says its Smiley® images and designs are proprietary. The Smiley Company

These accounts address different things: Unicode documents the development of Japanese carrier emoji and their later encoding, while the company describes its own branded graphic-emoticon lineage. Neither timeline should be used to claim that all smileys or all emoji originated in one place or year.

Do people interpret smiley faces the same way?

They should not be assumed to. A 2020 chapter by Aaron Sedley, Yongwei Yang, and Joseph M. Paxton, “Scaling the smileys: A multicountry investigation,” studied smiley-scale properties and construct meaning in six countries. Its accessible abstract describes collecting open-ended descriptions and assessing the numeric meaning of five faces on a 0–100 range. The faces were shown individually and in a series, with and without endpoint text labels. The publication record establishes the study’s scope and method; its accessible abstract does not provide enough results to conclude that people across countries interpret smileys uniformly or that one scale design is best. Google Research publication record

What do smiley faces mean in a survey?

In a survey, a smiley can be a response marker, but its meaning depends on the question. A face might be intended to represent satisfaction, mood, or another construct; the image alone does not establish which one respondents are rating. The 2020 multicountry study examined face-only versus endpoint-labeled presentations and individual faces versus a displayed series, so these are meaningful design dimensions—not proof that one arrangement is universally superior.

When interpreting a smiley scale, check what the question asks respondents to evaluate, what the endpoints say, whether the faces appear alone or as a set, and how the response options are presented. Do not infer cross-cultural equivalence from the presence of familiar-looking faces. The accessible abstract for the study does not report enough findings to establish that equivalence or recommend a single best format. Google Research publication record
