Social media stickers are digital images or interactive overlays, but the term means different things across apps. Instagram stickers add prompts, effects, or custom cutouts to Stories and Reels; WhatsApp and Telegram stickers are images people can send and reuse in chats. You can make them with built-in tools—no physical sticker supplies are needed.
What are social media stickers?
A sticker may be a tappable or interactive element layered onto a post, or a reusable image sent in a message. These formats serve different purposes and do not automatically transfer between apps.
- Instagram Stories and Reels: stickers can add music prompts, reveal effects, or cutouts from photos and videos.
- WhatsApp and Telegram chats: stickers are image-based messages, often organized into packs that others can use.
How to use stickers on Instagram
In a May 2024 announcement, Meta introduced four Instagram Story sticker types. The announcement documents the features at that time; availability and labels can vary by app version, account, and device.

| Cutouts | Turns part of a photo or video into a sticker for a Story or Reel. You can refine the selection, and saved cutouts remain in the sticker tray. Meta also described making a sticker from an eligible photo on a public Instagram account. |
For current availability, open the Instagram app and check the Story or Reel sticker tray. Meta’s May 2024 announcement of new Instagram Story stickers describes the original feature set.
How to create and share WhatsApp stickers
WhatsApp’s built-in tools let you make a sticker from a photo, then edit it with text, emoji, or drawing. You can arrange stickers into packs, add existing stickers to a pack, and send a pack in a chat. Meta said in an April 16, 2025 WhatsApp update that users could create their own packs and share them directly in chats.

How to make Telegram stickers
Telegram’s in-app Sticker Editor can turn a photo on your device into artwork with text, drawings, or emoji, then help you create a shareable pack. Telegram also offers the @Stickers mini app for managing packs and viewing usage statistics. Artists can instead prepare artwork in another app and upload it; each sticker needs an associated emoji.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which app should you use?
| App | Sticker’s main role | Creation and sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive overlays in Stories and Reels | Use the sticker tray and tools such as Cutouts; these are not chat sticker packs. | |
| Images sent in chats | Create and edit stickers from photos, organize them into packs, and share packs in chats. | |
| Telegram | Images sent in chats | Use the in-app editor or prepare artwork externally, then create or import a pack subject to format requirements. |
Choose based on where you want the sticker to appear. An Instagram Story overlay is designed for a Story or Reel, while a WhatsApp or Telegram pack is designed for messages. A file or pack made for one app should not be assumed to work in another without a platform-specific import process.

What research says about sticker use
A 2024 study by Melo and colleagues examined stickers in public political discussion groups in Brazil—not social media users generally. In that dataset, about 30% of groups sent no stickers, and stickers were less common than text and images overall. About half of unique stickers appeared more than once, with some shared more than a thousand times.
The researchers also classified 2.3% of stickers as NSFW using a Yahoo model threshold, accounting for 33,335 messages. That is a classifier-specific finding from the study’s sample, not an estimate of sticker content across WhatsApp or other platforms. The study is available at arXiv.
Do you need a separate sticker-making app?
No. Instagram, WhatsApp, and Telegram document built-in sticker tools for their respective features. A separate drawing or design app is optional if you want to create artwork before importing it into a platform such as Telegram; it is not a requirement for making or using stickers in these apps.
