Sparxell’s $3.2 million announcement refers to a 2024 funding round, not its latest announced financing. The company said the round combined seed investments, grants and awards to advance product development and commercialization. In February 2026, SWEN Capital Partners announced a separate €4.2 million pre-Series A round. Sparxell makes cellulose-based structural-color materials for businesses developing products such as paints and coatings, but the available information does not establish retail availability, audited sales or production volumes.
What Sparxell’s $3.2 million announcement covered
In April 2024, Sparxell said it had completed a $3.2 million round to advance product development and commercialization. The company described the funding as a combination of seed investments, grants and awards, but did not disclose how much came from each category. The figure should therefore not be read as a fully itemized equity investment.
The company named the Circular Innovation Fund, Future Communities Capital, PDS Ventures, Katapult VC, SNØCAP VC, Granatus Ventures and Joyance Partners among the participants. L’Oréal was described as an anchor investor in the Circular Innovation Fund; it was not separately named as a direct investor in Sparxell in the announcement. Sparxell’s April 2024 announcement also said the money would support pilot-production manufacturing capacity, product-development partnerships, product trials and hiring.

What changed with the 2026 financing
On 5 February 2026, SWEN Capital Partners announced a separate €4.2 million pre-Series A round for Sparxell, led by its Blue Ocean 2 fund, with Alpha Star Capital and Cambridge Enterprise also participating. This is a later financing announcement in euros, not a revision or conversion of the 2024 $3.2 million figure. The announcement is available from SWEN Capital Partners.

How Sparxell says its structural-color pigments work
Sparxell describes a process that starts with cellulose-rich sources such as wood pulp. The company says it extracts crystalline cellulose, disperses the crystals in water, and allows them to self-assemble into an ordered cholesteric arrangement as the water dries. The resulting film reflects light to create structural color; it can then be ground or shaped into different forms. This is Sparxell’s account of its technology, not an independently audited process description. More detail is on its technology page.
Structural color is produced by a material’s arrangement and the way it reflects light, rather than relying only on conventional chemical colorants. That distinction describes the company’s stated approach; it does not, by itself, establish how a Sparxell material will perform in a particular paint, coating or other formulation.

The available announcements do not report audited sales, shipment volumes or current production output, so pilot-production plans should not be mistaken for proven commercial scale.
