The Metropolitan Museum of Art launched Art Links on January 23, 2025, as its first Web3-based experience. Developed with art and technology platform TRLab, it was a mobile-first browser game that asked players to connect works in the museum’s collection. Players could try the puzzles without a crypto wallet; a wallet was needed only to claim NFT badges and achievements. The related rewards giveaway has ended, and the sources available do not establish whether the game itself is still playable.
What was Art Links?
Art Links turned looking across The Met’s collection into a connection puzzle. The museum described it as a short-session, mobile-first browser game, built with TRLab and featuring more than 140 artworks. Its launch announcement promised new weekly challenges for 12 weeks. The Met’s January 23, 2025 announcement called it the museum’s first Web3-based experience.
Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and Chief Executive Officer, called it “This groundbreaking online game is an exciting first for The Met and a singular experience in the museum field at large,”

How did the puzzles work?
Each chain asked players to link seven artworks through six connections. The game offered three rounds of increasing difficulty, with four attempts to complete a chain. The Met said players did not need prior art-history knowledge: learning material was built into the digital representation of each artwork and could be opened through an icon.
Connections across art and ideas
The selection was led by Destinee Filmore, Assistant Curator in The Met’s Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, with a cross-disciplinary museum team. Every chain included at least one work from the museum’s 20th- and 21st-century collection. Connection categories included Highlights, Material, and Emojis, as well as Web3 concepts such as randomization, security, and ledgers.

It was browser-based and mobile-first, rather than a game that required a crypto wallet just to start playing.
Did Art Links require a crypto wallet?
No wallet was needed to play. According to the official Art Links page, players had to sign in and connect or create a wallet only to claim NFT badges and achievements. The distinction matters: the puzzle experience was open without a wallet, while the collectible features used blockchain infrastructure on Base.
