A speech bubble—also called a speech balloon—frames words spoken aloud by a character and visually connects that dialogue to its speaker. Its shape, lettering and tail can help readers interpret the words, but these cues are conventions rather than a universal code.
How speech bubbles differ from thought bubbles and captions
These containers tell readers how to interpret text in relation to the image. The distinction is useful, though individual artists and traditions may vary.
- Speech bubble: dialogue presented as spoken aloud, usually associated with a character by a tail or another clear visual cue.
- Thought bubble: words or thoughts presented as unspoken. A cloud-like outline or small linking circles may signal thought, but the style is not fixed.
- Caption box: narration or other text that is not presented as a character speaking aloud. It may supply time, place, context or a narrator’s voice.
MoMA’s guide to comics describes speech bubbles and caption boxes as common ways words are framed alongside images; neither is required in every comic. MoMA’s guide to the elements of comics was published September 16, 2021.

What a bubble’s shape and lettering can communicate
Outline, lettering and placement can reinforce tone, volume or delivery. A wavy outline, for example, can suggest distress; a double outline can signal emphasis. These are examples from an EU-funded educational guide, not fixed meanings readers will interpret identically in every work. Establish a cue, then use it consistently so it remains readable rather than decorative noise. The EdComix guide also recommends allowing enough space for the text and avoiding collisions with other bubbles or the panel edge.
Lettering has a graphic presence of its own: scale, weight and style affect how words sit within the art. MoMA recommends considering bubble form and lettering in relation to the image, rather than treating the container as an afterthought. Its ideas and activities guide suggests experimenting with shape, size, color and outline. Bubbles can clarify or extend what an image conveys, and let a creator leave out details that would not make compelling pictures.

How to place and letter a speech bubble clearly
- Decide what the text is. If the words are spoken aloud, use a speech bubble; if they are unspoken thought or narration, choose a form that distinguishes that function.
- Make the speaker association clear. Aim the tail toward the speaker without obscuring faces, important action or other text. If several characters are talking, keep each tail and bubble association unambiguous.
- Set a reading order. Arrange bubbles in the order a reader should encounter the dialogue. Reading direction conventions vary by language and tradition, so do not assume every page is read left to right.
- Fit the words comfortably. Leave enough room that the text is legible and not crowded against the outline. Edit or resize the bubble rather than shrinking lettering until it is hard to read.
- Check the panel as a whole. Keep bubbles from colliding with one another or the frame, and make sure they do not hide visual information the reader needs.
- Use visual cues consistently. If a particular outline or lettering treatment signals a vocal quality in one place, repeat it with the same intent elsewhere unless the change is meaningful.
Do all comics need speech bubbles?
No. Comics can tell stories without bubbles or captions; images, pacing and panel sequence can carry meaning on their own. The containers are tools for managing the relationship between words and pictures, not requirements. MoMA’s activity guide notes that words can clarify or expand meanings already established visually, while also allowing an artist to omit details that would not make interesting pictures.
In scholarly discussion, the speech balloon is sometimes treated as central to comics’ combination of words and images. Digital Humanities Quarterly reproduces comics scholar David Carrier’s description of it as a defining element because it establishes a “word/image unity.” That is a scholarly framing, not a definition that every comic or reader must accept. For a broader discussion of comics as a form, the same article identifies Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics as a frequently cited work; it is not necessary for learning the basics of bubbles. Digital Humanities Quarterly’s introduction to Comic Book Markup Language provides that scholarly context.
