Stars: How They Form, Shine, and Die

Stars form from collapsing clouds of gas and dust, shine through core fusion, and follow different life paths according to their mass.

Stars are enormous, self-gravitating balls of hot gas, made mostly of hydrogen and helium. They form inside clouds of gas and dust, shine for most of their lives by fusing hydrogen into helium, and eventually change or die in ways that depend chiefly on their mass. The Sun is one example—not a template: stars vary widely in size, temperature, brightness, lifetime, and fate.

What are stars?

A star is a hot astronomical object held together by its own gravity. Most of its material is hydrogen and helium, with smaller amounts of other elements. Stars are not all alike: their mass influences their temperature, color, brightness, how quickly they use their fuel, and what remains when they die. NASA estimates that the Milky Way contains more than 100 billion stars; the exact figure is an estimate rather than a count of every star. NASA Science: Stars

Stars are also at different points in their lives. A red giant is an evolved star, while a white dwarf is a compact stellar remnant. Brown dwarfs, which NASA discusses alongside star types, are different from ordinary hydrogen-fusing stars: they do not sustain the same hydrogen fusion that powers main-sequence stars. How are stars born?

  1. A cold cloud gathers material. Stars begin in molecular clouds of gas and dust. Gravity draws denser pockets of material together.
  2. A clump collapses and heats up. As gravity pulls the material inward, the collapsing clump grows hotter and forms a protostar.
  3. Fusion begins in the core. When the core becomes hot and dense enough, hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium. This marks the start of the star’s hydrogen-fusing main-sequence life. NASA Science: Stars

Why do stars shine?

In a main-sequence star, nuclear fusion in the core releases energy. That energy heats the star and creates outward pressure, opposing the inward pull of gravity. The balance is called hydrostatic equilibrium. As long as the core can sustain the relevant reactions, the star remains in this relatively stable phase, which is the longest phase for many stars. NASA describes main-sequence stars as accounting for around 90% of the universe’s stellar population. NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Imagine the Universe!: Stars NASA Science: Stars

A star’s brightness is not simply a measure of how long it will live. Mass matters: lower-mass stars generally consume fuel more slowly, while massive stars burn through their fuel faster. The faster fuel use of massive stars helps explain why a greater mass does not mean a longer life. NASA Science: Stars

How is the Sun different from other stars?

The Sun is a G2 V main-sequence star: “G2” identifies its spectral type, and “V” identifies its main-sequence classification. It is about 4.6 billion years old. NASA estimates it will remain on the main sequence for about another 5 billion years before evolving into a red giant. NASA Science: Sun Facts NASA Science: Types of Stars

What happens when a star dies?

There is no single ending shared by all stars. Their later evolution depends chiefly on how much mass they have. The pathways below are broad categories: exact boundaries are approximate, and outcomes vary with the star’s circumstances.

Star’s broad pathway What happens Likely outcome
Sun-like star After its main-sequence phase, it expands into a red giant and eventually sheds its outer layers. A white dwarf remains: the exposed stellar core, which gradually cools.
More massive star Its core can collapse, triggering a supernova. A neutron star can remain; pulsars and magnetars are forms of neutron star.
Heavier massive-star progenitor Core collapse can produce a remnant too massive to remain a neutron star. A stellar-mass black hole can form.

These descriptions summarize the mass-dependent paths in NASA’s overview of star types; they should not be read as a universal mass-cutoff chart. NASA Science: Types of Stars

Why do stars have different colors and brightnesses?

A star’s color is related to its surface temperature: hotter stars appear bluer, while cooler stars appear redder. Brightness also depends on properties such as the star’s size and luminosity, and on how far away it is. A faint-looking star in the night sky may be intrinsically powerful but very distant; apparent brightness alone does not tell you its true luminosity. NASA’s star-types overview describes stars as differing in color, luminosity, and size. NASA Science: Types of Stars

For a painter, a star’s apparent color can be useful to observe, but the familiar white points and colored accents used in night-sky paintings are a visual interpretation rather than a complete portrait of the object. The astronomy behind those colors begins with temperature and the star’s stage of evolution.
