Stable Assistant began as a limited beta featuring Stable Diffusion 3, then expanded into a broader creative application. Stability AI says it sunset the application on October 1, 2026; the SD3 model and Developer Platform API have separate lifecycles, and the SD 3.0 API endpoints were deprecated in 2025 and rerouted to SD3.5 equivalents.
This distinction matters if you are looking for the old app, checking a subscription, or building with Stability AI models: the app’s sunset does not mean the models or API were also discontinued.
What happened to Stable Assistant?
Stability AI’s support notice says Stable Assistant was sunset on October 1, 2026. Its still-live product page describes features, but the later support notice is the relevant source for availability. Do not assume the application remains usable based on that marketing page.

The notice does not specify how long former users’ files remain available or whether the login endpoint continues working after sunset. Contact Stability AI support with account or file-access questions; do not assume access or deletion timing.

How the model, API, and app differ
These are three separate things: Stable Diffusion 3 is a model family; the Developer Platform API is a service for developers; and Stable Assistant was a web application for people who wanted a ready-made creative interface. The API’s model routing and the app’s sunset are separate product events.

What launched in April 2024?
On April 17, 2024, Stability AI announced SD3 and SD3 Turbo for its Developer Platform API, alongside a limited Stable Assistant beta featuring SD3. The hosted API let developers request image generation through the service; it was not the same thing as downloading model weights for self-hosting.

Stability AI described SD3’s Multimodal Diffusion Transformer architecture as using separate sets of weights for image and language representations, and said this improved text understanding and spelling compared with prior Stable Diffusion versions. These are the company’s technical and performance claims, not independent benchmark findings. The April announcement also attributed 99.9% service availability to its enterprise-grade API solution delivered with Fireworks AI; treat that as a historical vendor claim, not a current service-level guarantee.
Stable Assistant later grew into a broader creative application. Its product page described image generation and editing, audio, 3D, and chat. Those details describe the app’s historical scope, not its availability after the sunset date.
What should API users do now?
Stability AI’s API documentation says SD 3.0 endpoints were deprecated on April 17, 2025, and calls were rerouted to SD3.5 equivalents at no extra cost. The current documentation presents SD3.5 as the active base-model family. Check the live API reference for the endpoint, model identifier, request parameters, pricing, and availability before building or updating an integration.

- Check the current API reference. Do not copy an endpoint or model ID from a 2024 launch announcement.
- Confirm the model and request behavior. Verify supported parameters and the documented migration or routing behavior.
- Review current costs and terms. The researched sources do not establish a current price comparison; check live pricing and the applicable agreement.
- Test your workflow. Evaluate results for your own prompts and use case rather than relying on historical vendor claims.
Model availability and licensing
Stability AI’s May 2026 Core Models page listed SD3 Medium alongside SD3.5 models under Community or Enterprise agreements. A model’s listing does not mean Stable Assistant remains available, nor does it establish that a particular use is permitted. Stability AI’s July 2024 license announcement described free covered commercial use below USD $1 million in yearly revenue, but that historical announcement is not a substitute for the current agreement.

Is Stable Assistant shutting down?
Stability AI says the application was sunset on October 1, 2026. That date has passed. Its marketing page may still describe features, but the support notice is the relevant source for availability.
