The listed quantities are based on fabric with 42 inches of usable width.
| Material | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Solid white fabric | 2½ yards |
| Assorted prints | 32 fat eighths, each 9 × 21 inches |
| Assorted prints | 16 fat quarters, each 18 × 21 inches |
| Blue print for binding | ⅝ yard |
| Backing fabric | 4½ yards |
| Batting | 81-inch square |
These are the pattern’s quantities for the 16-block version. If your fabric is narrower than the stated usable width, the listed yardage may not provide the same cutting yield.

How the blocks are pieced
Each block is built from pieced units laid out in three rows. The instructions include triangle-square units and units made by sewing marked squares onto the corners of larger squares.
Triangle-square units
- Mark a diagonal on the square as directed in the pattern.
- Sew ¼ inch on both sides of the marked line.
- Cut on the marked line and press the resulting units open.
Corner-square units
Place and sew the marked squares at the corners of the larger squares, then trim the excess fabric to a ¼-inch seam allowance. Follow the pattern’s cutting and placement diagrams for unit sizes and orientation; the overall block should measure 18½ inches square before it is sewn into the quilt.

Four-block option
The pattern page also points to a four-block version intended as a wall hanging or baby quilt, with separate instructions. The main page does not give that version’s finished dimensions or material quantities, so its size and fabric needs cannot be calculated from the full-quilt list alone.
Finishing and quilting
Layer the quilt top with batting and backing, baste, then quilt as desired. The featured quilting by Sharon Elsberry uses a flower motif in each block, feathers in large areas, and arcs and back-and-forth loops in the triangle shapes. These are design examples, not required quilting instructions.

Color and layout ideas
The pattern’s descriptive copy highlights candy-colored blocks against a bright white background. For a Christmas version, staff member Nancy Wiles says she arranged blocks in rows of red, green, and gray to keep the design from feeling too busy, and cut setting squares from animal-print panels to place focal points in the middle two rows.
Pattern details and instructions are on the AllPeopleQuilt Starlet Big Block Quilt page, displayed as updated May 12, 2025.
