Nuremberg’s fountains and monuments trace a walk through the city’s art and history: medieval imperial symbolism at the Beautiful Fountain, Renaissance bronze at the Gooseherd Fountain, a modern sculpture shaped by Hans Sachs at the Ehekarussell, and a Baroque fountain with a remarkable history of removal and return. The city’s self-guided cultural route also connects the Way of Human Rights and Germanisches Nationalmuseum with the Ehekarussell and the castle district.
Which fountains and monuments should you see in Nuremberg?
For a compact introduction, start with the Beautiful Fountain on Hauptmarkt, then look for the Gooseherd Fountain by the Old Town Hall. The Ehekarussell adds a very different, modern interpretation of marriage near the White Tower. Neptune Fountain is farther from the historic centre, in Stadtpark, and stands out for its Baroque design and the story of its original and copy.

Beautiful Fountain: medieval figures at Hauptmarkt
The Schöner Brunnen is the natural starting point for a fountain walk through the historic centre. The Nuremberg tourism authority dates its construction to 1385–1396 and associates it with Heinrich Beheim. Its stone structure rises 19 metres above an octagonal basin, tapering like a pyramid. Four rows of figures give the fountain its dense sculptural programme: the city’s visitor brochure describes 40 figures representing the medieval world-view of the Holy Roman Empire. What stands at Hauptmarkt today is a copy made of shell limestone, installed at the beginning of the 20th century. Fragments of the original are held by the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. The tourism authority reports that the fountain was renovated in 2016 and has flowed since that restoration. Its railing is a separate detail worth noticing: the turning brass ring was made in 1587 and has been replaced several times, according to the city’s 2025–2026 visitor brochure. Local lore says turning it brings good luck or grants a wish; the city presents this as a legend, not a promise.

Gooseherd Fountain: a Renaissance bronze near the Old Town Hall
At Rathausplatz, opposite the Old Town Hall, the Gänsemännchenbrunnen depicts a peasant holding a goose beneath each arm. The city tourism authority describes it as one of the best-known examples of German Renaissance bronze sculpture. Its small, direct subject makes a useful contrast with the more elaborate architectural and figurative programmes of the other fountains. Nuremberg tourism authority: Gooseherd Fountain.
Ehekarussell: six scenes of married life
By the White Tower on Ludwigsplatz, Jürgen Weber’s Ehekarussell turns the fountain into a modern, figurative reading of marriage. Erected in 1984, it arranges six scenes around Hans Sachs, the Nuremberg Meistersinger, moving from early infatuation toward death. The work takes its model from Sachs’s poem Das bittersüße eheliche Leben (“Bitter-Sweet Married Life”), written for his wife. The tourism authority notes that the poem can be read on the heart outside the fountain. Nuremberg tourism authority: Ehekarussell.

Neptune Fountain: a Baroque original and a displaced copy
The Neptune Fountain now in Stadtpark is a restored copy, not the original. The Nuremberg tourism authority says Georg Schweigger and Christoph Ritter designed the original from 1660, and Wolfgang Hieronymus Herold cast it in 1668. Conceived after the Thirty Years’ War as a symbol of peace, it was sold by indebted Nuremberg to Tsar Paul I in 1797 before it had ever been put into operation in the city. The original is now in Peterhof, near St. Petersburg. Nuremberg tourism authority: Neptune Fountain.
Casts were made in the late 19th century with the Tsar’s permission, and a copy stood on Hauptmarkt from 1902. The Nazi regime removed it in 1934, citing its obstruction of party rallies. The original was back in Nuremberg from 1942 to 1947 after seizure by the German armed forces; the restored copy eventually found its present home in Stadtpark. The story is unusual because the original and the copy followed separate paths: the fountain visible in Nuremberg today is not the work that was sold to Russia.

Plan a walk through Nuremberg’s public art
The city’s official “Art, Culture and Master Traders” self-guided route offers a way to connect central cultural sites. It begins at the Neues Museum, passes the Way of Human Rights and Germanisches Nationalmuseum, reaches the Ehekarussell via Kornmarkt and Dr.-Kurt-Schumacher-Straße, then continues along the city wall and over the Kettensteg toward the castle district. It is a broader art-and-culture walk, not a fountain-only itinerary. Nuremberg tourism authority: Art, Culture and Master Traders route.
The route can be followed online; a printed guidebook is optional. The tourism authority also lists the Albrecht Dürer Monument and Virtue Fountain among the city’s monuments and fountains.
