A stick bomb is a woven arrangement of wooden craft sticks that releases in a rapid chain reaction when its retaining stick is removed. The sticks are bent and held under strain; when the weave comes apart, stored energy sends them moving. There is no chemical blast—the “explosion” is kinetic art in motion.
What happens when a stick bomb is released?
The interlocked sticks hold one another in a bent position. Removing the retaining stick disrupts that arrangement, and the motion travels through the linked weave as the sticks spring out of place. Purdue Engineering describes the structure as “pre-stressed.” Lucas Allegrette, a mechanical engineering undergraduate, explains: “When we remove one stick, that strain energy turns into kinetic energy, and the stick bomb explodes.” Purdue University College of Engineering

That makes a stick bomb a hands-on demonstration of stored strain energy, motion, and repeating patterns—not an explosive device or a chemical reaction. PBS Kids for Parents and the Idaho National Laboratory activity also present craft-stick chain reactions as experiments in energy and motion.
What materials do you need?
- Large wooden craft sticks, tongue-depressor-size sticks, or large Popsicle sticks
- A hard, flat work surface, such as a cleared table or floor
The instructions vary by activity: PBS Kids gives a three-line over-under weave, while UNC Morehead Planetarium begins with crossed sticks and adds more while pressure is held near the center. How to set up and release the weave safely
- Choose a flat surface and clear space around it, including the likely path of the sticks.
- Build the weave using a single activity’s instructions. Some activities may require an adult helper to hold pressure while the sticks are added.
- Keep faces and bystanders away from the structure. The sticks can fly upward when released.
- When the weave is complete, release the retaining stick from a position that keeps hands and faces out of the path.

How to turn it into a simple experiment
Change one feature at a time and observe what happens. Outcomes depend on the build and setup, so treat these as questions to investigate, not results guaranteed in advance.
- Chain length: Compare a shorter and a longer weave. Note how far the motion travels and how the release looks.
- Weave or layout: Compare arrangements only when you can construct each one consistently.
- Surface: Observe the chain on carpet and on a hard floor, keeping the setup otherwise similar.
- Bend or obstacle: Try a bend in the chain or a safely placed obstacle, then record whether and how the motion continues.
Slow-motion video can help you review the sequence of movement after the release. Science Buddies suggests using video as an observation method, and Maker Camp’s cobra-weave activity offers another layout to explore.

For a useful comparison, keep the same surface and release method while changing just one variable. Record the setup and what you observe rather than assuming one chain will always travel farther or behave in a particular way.
