How to Estimate Yardage for an Unlabeled Yarn Skein

Weigh a measured length of the same yarn to estimate an unlabeled skein’s yardage. WPI helps identify thickness, but not how many yards are left.

To estimate how much yarn is left, weigh a measured length of the same yarn, then use its yards-per-gram ratio to calculate the skein’s yardage. This gives a practical estimate, not a manufacturer-certified total. A wraps-per-inch (WPI) check can help identify thickness, but it cannot tell you how many yards are in the skein.

Estimate yardage by weighing a sample

You’ll need a digital scale that reads grams and a way to measure yarn length. The sample must come from the skein you’re estimating: a yards-per-gram ratio from another yarn is not a reliable substitute. The Knitting Guild Association describes using a sample from 1 to 10 yards, depending on the desired accuracy. For irregular thick-and-thin yarn, measure a longer length so the sample is more representative.

  1. Measure and cut a known length of yarn in yards.
  2. Weigh that sample in grams and record its weight.
  3. Calculate the ratio: sample length in yards ÷ sample weight in grams = yards per gram.
  4. Weigh the full skein, or the remaining yarn, in grams.
  5. Calculate the estimate: skein weight in grams × yards per gram = estimated yards.

For example, if a 10-yard sample weighs 5 grams, the ratio is 2 yards per gram. If the remaining skein weighs 88 grams, the estimate is 176 yards. These figures illustrate the calculation; use measurements from your own yarn rather than borrowing a ratio from a different yarn. The Knitting Guild Association’s “How To Be a Yarn Detective” gives other examples, including Cascade 220 at 220 yards per 100 grams. That is a specific yarn example, not a universal conversion.

Use WPI to assess thickness, not yardage

Wraps per inch can help you estimate a yarn’s thickness category when its label is missing. It does not measure the skein’s length. To check WPI, wrap the yarn snugly around a pencil or similar object, placing the turns side by side without overlap or large gaps. Count the wraps across one inch, repeat in several places, and avoid pulling the yarn tight.

The Craft Yarn Council’s 2018 standards list these reference ranges:

Yarn category WPI range
Lace 30–40+
Super fine 14–30
Fine 12–18
Light 11–15
Medium 9–12
Bulky 6–9
Super bulky 5–6
Jumbo 1–4

These ranges overlap, and the Council notes that WPI is subjective because wrapping tension affects the result. Fluffy yarn can compress, making a WPI check especially unreliable if you press or pull too hard. Treat the category as a starting point, then make a gauge swatch before choosing needles or hooks for a project. See the Council’s Standards & Guidelines for Knitting and Crochet for its measuring guidance and category ranges.

UPTTHOW Knitting WPI Multifunctional Combo Ruler for Spinners Yarn
  • WPI Gauge: Quickly determine WPI rating by counting yarn wraps per inch or laying the yarn along the black strip until you find a match. Use the chart provided to compare your WPI number to the weight category to determine the weight of your yarn
  • Needle Gauge: The knitting needle adopts US 0-15 and metric 2-10mm. If the needle size marking is worn, the hole can help you quickly confirm the needle size
  • Twist angle gauge: Align the yarn with the vertical line, then slide it over the gauge to find the degree line that best matches the twist angle, helping you measure the twist angle and reminding you which direction is S and which direction is Z
  • Convenience: The camber notches can hold the yarn on the spinning wheel and prevent the yarn from unraveling when you are resting in the spinning. The square notch can be paired with a gift chain and lobster clasp for easy carrying or hanging wherever you want
  • Multifunctional: It is made of high-quality acrylic material, clearly marked and multi-functional, which can quickly determine needle size, WPI, yarn weight, and measure twist angle. Is a perfect multifunctional tool in everyday life

Check whether the estimate is enough for your project

Compare the estimated yards with the pattern’s total yardage requirement. If the yarn is a replacement for the pattern’s suggested yarn, compare yardage rather than skein weight: two skeins can weigh different amounts and contain different lengths. Use the project’s required total and the replacement yarn’s stated yards per skein to work out how many skeins you need. Lion Brand’s yardage guidance explains why the length listed for a skein matters when substituting yarn.

A measured estimate can help with the length question, while WPI and a swatch help assess thickness and fabric behavior. Neither replaces the other: WPI cannot establish yardage, and a yardage estimate alone does not show whether the yarn will produce the fabric your pattern needs.
