Stippling is a way to make an image by accumulating dots or very short repeated touches. Change their spacing and density to suggest light, shadow, texture, or form—whether you are drawing with a pen, painting, or making a print. It is a technique, not a synonym for Pointillism: that name belongs to a historically specific artistic context.

What is stippling in art?

The National Portrait Gallery defines stippling as “a popular method of drawing, engraving or painting” that uses “dots or repeated short strokes to create an image.” The marks may be visible individually, or merge at viewing distance into a broader shape or tonal passage. The medium and historical setting determine whether a work is more specifically a pen drawing, a painting, or an engraved print. National Portrait Gallery: Stipple

How do you use stippling for shading?

Density is the main control: marks placed farther apart tend to leave more of the paper or ground visible, while marks clustered more closely create a darker-looking passage. There is no universal dot count or fixed spacing; adjust what you make to the image, the size of the marks, and the surface.

  1. Choose a simple form. A sphere or an uncomplicated object is useful for seeing how light turns into shadow.
  2. Plan the value areas. Identify the light, middle, and dark regions before adding marks. A small thumbnail or light pencil guide can help keep the plan clear.
  3. Begin with separated marks. Place dots or short touches in the lighter areas, leaving more space between them.
  4. Build the darker passages gradually. Bring marks closer together as the form turns away from the light. Add in small increments so you can judge the developing tone.
  5. Keep the first exercise consistent. Use a similar mark size and pressure at first; once density is doing the tonal work, vary size or direction deliberately to describe texture.

This is a practical exercise based on the density principle, not a fixed prescription. With ink, marks are difficult to erase, so test the pen and paper on scrap first. The National Portrait Gallery discusses building shading through marks rather than blending and recommends practice with drawing materials. What pen is best for stippling?

For a first pen-and-ink exercise, use a fine-tip drawing pen and paper that tolerates its ink. There is no single best pen established for every artist or project. A fine tip gives you a direct way to place small marks, but the resulting dot size and feel depend on the tool and paper. Try a few marks before committing to a finished drawing.

When comparing pens, consider tip width and dot size, whether the pen is disposable, refillable, or dip-fed, ink compatibility and water resistance, grip comfort during repeated marks, and cost per usable refill. Choose ink appropriate to the pen rather than assuming every ink behaves the same way. Light pencil planning or a separate thumbnail can help, but it cannot make permanent ink marks erasable.

Ink and paper

A basic setup is a fine-tip pen, compatible ink, and paper suited to that ink. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s ink overview, published 1 May 2020, describes drawing inks as water-based media made with plant and mineral colorants; it also notes that ink may be diluted for lighter washes and applied by pen or brush. This is material context, not a guarantee about every commercial ink’s formulation or performance. The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Ink

How stippling differs across drawing, painting, and printmaking

Drawing

In pen drawing, the artist places dots or short strokes directly on paper. Their accumulation can create both tonal shifts and surface texture. Because ink is difficult to erase, a trial on scrap paper is useful for checking flow and how the marks sit on the chosen surface.

Painting

Paint can also be applied as dots or repeated touches. That is stippling as a mark-making operation; the paint and brush are part of the medium, not a reason to call every dotted painting Pointillism. The National Portrait Gallery includes painting in its definition of stippling. National Portrait Gallery: Stipple

Engraving and printed stipple

In stipple engraving, dots are cut into a printing surface that takes ink. Differences in the density of those marks help produce tonal variation in the print. The National Portrait Gallery attributes the invention of engraving stipple to Giulio Campagnola at about 1510. That historical attribution concerns engraving stipple specifically; it should not be treated as the origin date for every form of dot-based art. National Portrait Gallery: Stipple

Stippling versus Pointillism

Stippling is the broad technique: dots or repeated short strokes build an image. Pointillism is a historically specific movement or practice, so the terms are not interchangeable. A drawing made with dots is not automatically Pointillist, and dots alone do not establish a work’s movement or art-historical context.
