At Subi Blooms 2025, Perth florist Lauren Barbas turned memories of Italian family life into Nonna’s Table, a floral installation centred on a matriarch figure and a Sunday table set with figs, fresh bread and olives. The Mother’s Day-weekend festival in Subiaco, Western Australia, was reported to feature 15 large-scale floral installations in its seventh year.

The festival’s Italian theme drew on Subiaco’s connection to the Italian town of Subiaco, including a sister-city relationship. Subiaco mayor David McMullen said the two Italian-inspired installations reflected the city’s Italian heritage and complemented the wider floral line-up. PerthNow’s report is the source for the event details and artist descriptions.
What was Nonna’s Table?
Nonna’s Table was created by Lauren Barbas, a florist with Cotton and Sage. Drawing on her Calabrian roots, Barbas conceived the work around food, family and homegrown traditions. Its central female statue honoured family matriarchs, while an intimate tablescape featured figs, fresh bread and olives—details that made an Italian Sunday meal the installation’s emotional centre.
#1 Best Overall
Barbas connected the idea to the traditions she hopes to build with her own family. In the PerthNow report, she said: “As a new mum myself, I cherish my Sundays with my daughter and husband and can’t wait to create traditions of our own as she grows older.”

The other Italian-inspired work highlighted in the report was Bizilla & Barilla, created by Eden Ranelli of Freakhaus. Rather than evoke a family meal through its setting, the abstract installation translated pasta into sculptural form. Red and white flowers were intended to echo lacework and reference the colours of the Italian and Maltese flags.

The two works approached heritage differently: Barbas used the imagery of a shared table and family matriarchs, while Ranelli made pasta itself the playful starting point for a floral structure.
