Lola Beagley’s Reflections of Light, Life and Love remembers her great-grandfather, Melvin Bristow, by placing a painted portrait alongside photographs from his life. The work was included in The West Australian Pulse 2025, a now-concluded exhibition of Year 12 visual arts graduates at the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA).
Who is Lola Beagley?
Beagley was an 18-year-old from Gidgegannup and a Swan Christian College student when she exhibited the work. She made it as part of a school project themed around “perspectives and personal identity,” choosing to express the importance of family. “Our theme was perspectives and personal identity, so I wanted to portray my value of family,” she said, as reported by PerthNow.

Beagley described feeling “super privileged and proud” to have the work included. She also said it was “definitely staying in the family.”
What is Reflections of Light, Life and Love about?
The work is a memorial to Beagley’s great-grandfather, Melvin Bristow. Its starting point was a photograph of Bristow looking at a slideshow of pictures from his life in the Wheatbelt. Beagley recalled having a close relationship with her great-grandparents: “I was really lucky to have a good relationship with my great-grandparents,” she said.

The family images carried details of a life rooted in the region: Bristow’s childhood athletics and running, Jack Russell terriers, horses, old farm equipment and family snapshots. Beagley’s title suggests a tribute shaped not only by loss, but also by affection and the memories shared across generations.
How did Beagley combine portraiture and family photographs?
Beagley painted a portrait based on the photograph of Bristow watching the slideshow, then used an acetone tissue-transfer technique to place some images onto the painting. In the exhibition installation, the portrait faced a wall onto which photographs were projected. The result brought the remembered image, transferred fragments and projected family photographs into one encounter.

- VIBRANT CULTURAL DESIGN: Bring a burst of rich color and global inspiration into your home! This captivating canvas print features a stylized family of five kangaroos—including a sweet joey tucked inside its mother's pouch—decorated with intricate, colorful patterns inspired by traditional Australian Aboriginal dot paintings.
- FAUX TEXTURE FLAT PRINT: Enjoy the stunning, dimensional look of heavy acrylic paint and raised dots without the delicate upkeep. Please note that this is a high-quality, completely smooth flat canvas print. The highly detailed graphic design cleverly mimics thick brushstrokes, and a textured ochre background, but the canvas surface itself is completely flat to the touch.
- PREMIUM GALLERY WRAPPED CANVAS: Built for long-lasting display. The smooth printed canvas is professionally stretched and tightly gallery-wrapped over a sturdy solid wooden inner frame. This ensures your vibrant wildlife wall art remains taut, warp-free, and looks beautiful from every angle without needing an expensive outer frame.
- READY TO HANG IMMEDIATELY: Skip the hassle of complicated installations. This lightweight, contemporary artwork arrives fully assembled with hanging hardware already attached to the back of the wooden frame, allowing you to instantly upgrade your blank walls and add a lively pop of color in just minutes.
- PERFECT FOR ECLECTIC SPACES: Whether you want to add a playful and educational focal point to a child's nursery, bring boho-chic energy to your living room, or decorate a travel-themed home office, this striking red, blue, and golden-yellow animal landscape fits perfectly into eclectic, modern, and worldly decors.
The reporting does not identify the kind of paint or projection equipment, so those materials cannot be specified. What is clear is the relationship between the elements: the portrait anchors the work in Bristow’s likeness, while photographs extend it into the scenes and people of his life.
Who was Melvin Bristow?
Bristow was a wheat farmer from Narembeen. He grew up on the family farm and later took it over from his father. He died in 2023, aged 98.
