Swatch introduced its 2023 Art Journey watch collection in Lisbon with an immersive, multisensory event built around themed rooms intended to bring the featured artworks to life. The collection brought ten masterpieces by artists including Roy Lichtenstein, René Magritte, Sandro Botticelli and Katsushika Hokusai onto watches, through collaborations with museums and cultural institutions.
What was the 2023 Swatch Art Journey?
Swatch presented the 2023 Art Journey as five capsule collections, released from mid-March through May, and said the watches recreated ten masterpieces. The partners named in its March 10, 2023 announcement were MoMA, Magritte, Le Gallerie degli Uffizi, Louvre Abu Dhabi and a forthcoming street-art installment. The series was part of Swatch’s longer-running effort to bring art from studios and museum walls into everyday life.

Swatch traces its connection between art and watches to its first Art Special watches in 1985. The company also pointed to collaborations with the Rijksmuseum and Thyssen-Bornemisza in 2018, the Musée du Louvre in 2019, MoMA in 2021 and Centre Pompidou in 2022. Swatch’s 2023 announcement describes the collection and its background.
Which artists and artworks appear on the watches?
Roy Lichtenstein with MoMA
The two Swatch x MoMA designs mark the centenary of Roy Lichtenstein’s birth: “Girl by Roy Lichtenstein, The Watch,” based on Girl (1963), and “Reverie by Roy Lichtenstein, The Watch,” based on Reverie (1965). Swatch highlighted the comic-book visual language and Benday dots associated with Lichtenstein’s work. In the lookbook, MoMA Director of Business Development Robin Sayetta said the collaboration celebrated an artist whose work is well represented in the museum’s collection.

René Magritte
The Swatch x Magritte pair, “La Trahison des Images” and “Le Fils de l’Homme,” marked the 125th anniversary of Magritte’s birth. The designs draw on the Belgian Surrealist’s image-play and familiar motifs, with related imagery and text carried onto straps and packaging.
Sandro Botticelli with Le Gallerie degli Uffizi
The Uffizi collaboration reinterpreted Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus and Allegory of Spring. Plant and floral details from the paintings were incorporated into the watch designs, linking their decoration to the works’ lush natural imagery.

Katsushika Hokusai with Louvre Abu Dhabi
The Louvre Abu Dhabi model combines Hokusai’s Under the Wave off Kanagawa with details inspired by an astrolabe artifact. Swatch described Prussian blue tones, with the wave extending across the dial and front strap and astrolabe details placed underneath.
The street-art installment
Swatch’s 2023 announcement described a street-art installment as forthcoming, but the named details above do not establish its artist, works or model names. The announced total of ten masterpieces refers to the collection as a whole, not just the designs described here.

What happened at the Lisbon launch?
Swatch described the Lisbon introduction as an immersive, multisensory experience. The event used themed rooms to give visitors an environment for encountering the artworks behind the watches, rather than presenting the collection only as a product display. The official Lisbon launch post does not specify the event’s date or venue, and the official materials cited here do not give an attendance or sales figure.

Launch-era availability is not the same as current stock. Swatch’s 2023 MoMA lookbook said the two Lichtenstein watches would be available from March 16, 2023 through Swatch stores, Swatch.com, MoMA Design Stores and store.moma.org. That date and those channels apply to the two MoMA models as stated in the lookbook, not necessarily to every Art Journey watch or to present-day availability. The international Art Journey lookbook contains the launch details; check Swatch or the relevant museum retailer for current listings and stock.

How the Lisbon collection differs from Swatch’s later Guggenheim chapter
The Lisbon event introduced the 2023 Art Journey collection; it should not be confused with Swatch’s later Swatch x Guggenheim chapter, announced in Portuguese-language materials on January 15, 2026. That separate collection features works by Edgar Degas, Paul Klee, Claude Monet and Jackson Pollock. Swatch’s current US catalog, observed October 4, 2026, lists examples from that later chapter, but those US catalog prices are not prices for the 2023 Lisbon collection. Swatch’s Guggenheim announcement provides the later collection’s context.
