To make classic fish-scale nails, paint small dots in overlapping rows so each new row partly covers the one below. Use a few complementary polish shades for a gradient, then seal the design with a top coat. If you want a more regular pattern, use a fish-scale stencil; for a softer, mottled look, dab polish on with a small piece of makeup sponge.

What you need
- Base coat and top coat
- Two or more complementary nail-polish colors if you want a gradient
- A dotting tool or the polish brush for the freehand method
- Optional: fish-scale stencil, or a makeup sponge and angled tweezers for alternate effects
Begin with clean, dry nails. Apply base coat and let it dry before adding color. A 2012 tutorial lists a base coat, two color polishes and a top coat as its materials: Creativenailart’s fish-scale print tutorial.
Method 1: Make scales with overlapping dots
- Apply a base color. Let it dry fully so the pattern sits cleanly on top.
- Place the first row of dots. Work over a manageable area of the nail, keeping the dots similar in size.
- Add the next row over the first. Offset the dots so each new one overlaps the spaces between the dots below it. The repeated overlap is what makes the marks read as scales rather than separate spots.
- Continue in rows. Keep the spacing and overlap as consistent as you can, and pause if you need to reload polish or steady your hand.
- Change colors for a gradient, if desired. A 2011 tutorial builds the rows with different shades and places darker colors toward the tips and lighter ones near the roots. Reverse that order or choose another arrangement to suit your design; the direction is a style choice, not a requirement. See Maryam Maquillage’s Fish Scales Nails.
- Let the design dry, then apply top coat. Use a light, even pass to help seal the pattern.
Choose a pattern method

Method 2: Use a fish-scale stencil
- Apply and dry a base color. This is the background visible through the pattern.
- Prepare the stencil according to its design. Some stencils have small center pieces to remove; this setup can take time.
- Position the stencil on the nail. Press it down evenly so polish is less likely to slip beneath it.
- Layer polish over the stencil. Use one color or several shades for a gradient, then lift the stencil carefully.
- Let the pattern dry and seal with top coat.
Stencil steps are based on the approach described by Life in Lacquer. Its tutorial identifies Nail Stickrs fish-scale stencils, but their current brand status and availability have not been established; search for “fish scale nail art stencils” if you want to find a suitable option.

Method 3: Add a sponge-dabbed texture
- Tear off a small, rough piece of makeup sponge. An uneven edge helps produce the irregular texture.
- Grip it with angled tweezers and dab it into polish.
- Tap color onto the nail lightly. Build the effect gradually rather than pressing down for a solid block of color.
- Let the polish dry and finish with top coat.
This technique, described by Prairie Beauty, is a textured alternative rather than a way to make precise, overlapping scales.

For a gradient, choose shades that work together and change color between rows. A dedicated flake polish is another option: Death Valley Nails lists a product called FISH SCALES, described as a jelly neon blue polish with multicolor iridescent flakes and other decorative particles. The maker recommends base coat, two to three coats of that polish, and top coat; this is product-specific guidance, not a universal coat count. Its price and stock may change. Whatever method you use, allow each layer enough time to dry before adding the next. If dots blur together, use smaller marks, work in a smaller section, or leave more space between rows. If stencil edges look uneven, check that the stencil is pressed flat before applying polish.
