Leonardo.Ai announced a $31 million funding round on December 6, 2023, saying the capital would support engineering, sales and marketing as it expanded from a consumer image-generation service into a broader enterprise creative platform. The Sydney-based company said it had surpassed 7 million users and 700 million generated images.
What happened
Leonardo.Ai announced the funding on December 6, 2023. The company described the round as worth $31 million USD, or approximately $47 million AUD. The retrieved coverage identifies investors including Blackbird, Side Stage Ventures, Smash Capital, TIRTA Ventures, Gaorong Capital and Samsung Next. A contemporaneous investor list from Leonardo co-founder J.J. Fiasson also named Piton Capital, Serena and Riverwood Capital.

Because the investor lists differ between sources, it is more accurate to say the round included these firms than to treat any one list as exhaustive. The available coverage also does not establish a formal Series A, Series B or other round classification, nor does it identify a lead investor. TechCrunch reported the announcement.
The company did not disclose a valuation in the cited material. The funding amount therefore shows the scale of the investment, but not the price investors paid or Leonardo’s implied value.

What Leonardo.Ai did in 2023
Leonardo.Ai was positioned as a visual-content production platform rather than simply a text-to-image novelty. It allowed users to generate, edit and reuse visual assets for applications including:
- Game assets and character concepts
- Advertising and campaign imagery
- Fashion concepts
- Architecture and design visualisation
- Storyboards and video pre-production
The company originally focused on game-asset creation, then broadened its product for other creative industries. That shift mattered commercially: games, advertising, design and media businesses need repeatable visual systems, not just isolated images.
The enterprise push
Leonardo said it intended to use the new capital to expand its engineering, sales and marketing teams, with particular emphasis on its enterprise business.
The enterprise offering described at the time included collaboration tools, private-cloud hosting and API access. Its production API was intended to let customers build Leonardo-based generation into their own products and workflows rather than relying solely on the public web application.
This made the raise a capital-allocation story as much as an image-generation story. Leonardo was attempting to convert consumer adoption into business infrastructure through private deployments, team workflows, custom models and production integrations.
Control was Leonardo’s competitive thesis
Leonardo’s historical pitch against tools such as Midjourney and Adobe Firefly focused on control, consistency and repeatability. The company said users could save, edit and reuse assets in a consistent style, train their own image-generation models and guide composition more directly.

One example was Live Canvas, which combined a text prompt with a rough sketch. As the user drew, the system generated an evolving image. In practical terms, that approach was intended to address a limitation of prompt-only workflows: a prompt may describe a desired scene, but it does not always provide precise control over layout, pose, silhouette or composition.
Custom-model training and reusable assets were similarly aimed at production work. A game studio, agency or design team may need characters, objects or campaign elements to remain visually related across many outputs. Leonardo presented its tools as a way to build that consistency into the workflow.
These were Leonardo’s differentiation claims, not independently established proof that it produced better results than Midjourney or Firefly in every use case.
What the traction figures show—and what they do not
Leonardo’s founders said that, since December of the preceding year, the platform had reached:

Those are company-reported figures, not independently audited user or image counts. Dividing 700 million by 7 million produces a rough lower-bound arithmetic relationship of 100 images per user, but that does not establish average engagement: both figures are stated as “more than,” and activity may be concentrated among a small number of highly active users.
The numbers also do not reveal paid conversion, retention, revenue, enterprise contract value, gross margin, inference cost or customer concentration. They demonstrate claimed reach and generation volume, but not by themselves the quality or durability of the business.

Training-data claims require precision
In the 2023 description, Leonardo said its system was built using open-source technologies, synthetic data and data from Creative Commons. That statement should not be expanded into a claim that every Leonardo model or current product uses only those sources.
“Creative Commons” covers multiple licences with different conditions, including possible attribution or share-alike requirements. The cited reporting does not provide a complete audit of the provenance or licensing status of every training example.

The funding announcement describes Leonardo’s 2023 position. Its current product pages show a broader platform covering image generation, video, design, team collaboration and APIs. Current prices and features can change, so the following figures are dated to August 18, 2026.
Web application
Leonardo’s official pricing page listed a free tier alongside individual plans of:
- Free: $0 per month, with 150 fast tokens per day and a 150-token bank shown on the pricing page.
- Essential: $12 per month.
- Premium: $30 per month.
- Ultimate: $60 per month.
The listed prices exclude tax. The free tier is useful for exploration, but the pricing page indicates quota limits and public creations. Paid tiers add larger allocations and privacy-related features, with plan-specific differences in concurrency and generation capacity. See the official Leonardo pricing page for current terms.
Team plans
The official team-plans page listed Starter at $72 per month and Growth at $144 per month, alongside displayed per-seat pricing and custom options. Team features include shared tokens, private team generations, workspace and collection management, collaboration and team-level model training.

These plans are aimed at agencies, studios and design teams rather than occasional individual users. They also cost substantially more than individual subscriptions, so buyers should assess seat requirements, generation volume, privacy needs and whether their existing asset-management tools already cover collaboration.

API access is separate
Leonardo’s current API model is primarily pay-as-you-go. The API page listed a $5 starting credit, automatic top-ups and up to 10 concurrent generations on the self-serve entry option, with custom plans for higher volume, concurrency and discounts.
API access is separate from the web-app subscriptions. Paying for an individual or team web plan should not be assumed to include API usage. Leonardo’s documentation also says the API is transitioning from subscription plans to pay-as-you-go. Developers should check the API page and the API pricing FAQ before budgeting a production application.

Leonardo’s API page says generated images may be used commercially, subject to its Terms of Service, and says API inputs and generated images are not used for training and can be controlled as private. Platform permission is not the same as guaranteed copyright protection, exclusivity or clearance from claims involving trademarks, people, source images or other third-party rights.

Midjourney may be a stronger fit for creators who prioritise aesthetic exploration and its established creator community. Leonardo’s historical positioning emphasised greater control, custom models and reusable production assets.

Adobe Firefly is relevant for users already working inside Adobe’s creative ecosystem. Leonardo’s 2023 pitch instead focused on its standalone workflow, direct composition control and customisation.
Self-hosted or open-source image-generation stacks may suit organisations that need maximum infrastructure control, data-residency options or custom deployment. The trade-off is greater responsibility for hardware, inference, maintenance, security, model licensing and safety controls.

None of these options is universally superior. The right choice depends on whether the buyer values visual exploration, Adobe integration, workflow control, privacy, predictable costs or deployment ownership.
Why the round mattered
Leonardo’s raise represented a bet that generative imagery would become a controllable production workflow for businesses, not merely a consumer novelty.
- It funded an infrastructure-heavy category. Image generation requires ongoing investment in models, inference capacity, product engineering and reliability.
- It supported an enterprise transition. Private-cloud deployments, collaboration and APIs are designed to turn a consumer-facing tool into something organisations can integrate into production.
- It made workflow control central. Custom models, reusable assets and sketch-guided generation address the consistency problems that can limit prompt-only tools.
- It increased the visibility of an Australian AI startup. A Sydney-based company was raising substantial capital in a global market dominated by better-known US and European generative-AI firms, although the funding alone does not establish that Leonardo was Australia’s largest or most important AI company.
