The Syrian Revolution flag is a horizontal green, white and black tricolor with three red five-pointed stars across the white stripe. Syria’s Ministry of Culture calls it both the Flag of Independence and the Flag of the Syrian Revolution. The design is also described as Syria’s national flag following the revolution’s success, in a country still undergoing political transition as of September 2026.
What does the Syrian Revolution flag look like?
Its three equal horizontal bands run green at the top, white in the middle and black at the bottom. Three red five-pointed stars sit in a row at the center of the white band. The Ministry of Culture’s English-language “About Syria’s Flag” page uses the names “Flag of Independence” and “Flag of the Syrian Revolution” for this design.

When comparing it with a different Syrian flag design, the clearest visual distinction is the stripe order and the stars: this flag has green-white-black bands and three red stars, rather than a red-white-black design with two green stars. That comparison identifies the designs, not every variant used throughout Syrian history.
When has this flag been used?
The Ministry of Culture’s account gives this timeline: the flag was first adopted in 1932 during the First Syrian Republic, remained in official use until 1958, and was readopted by the Syrian opposition in 2011 at the start of the revolution. The ministry says it was reinstated as the national flag following the revolution’s success. This is the ministry’s summary; the available sources here do not establish the complete legal history between those periods.

In a report published September 26, 2026, SANA said Ahmad al-Sharaa had been announced president for the transitional period on January 29, 2025. Political arrangements can change, so present-day descriptions of the flag’s status should be read in that dated context.

What do the colors and stars mean?
The Ministry of Culture offers symbolic interpretations for each part of the design. These are the meanings attributed by that source, rather than a single universally established explanation:
- Green: hope, growth and the Islamic heritage of the Rashidun Caliphate.
- White: peace and the Umayyad period, when Damascus was its capital.
- Black: historical oppression and struggle, as well as the Abbasid Caliphate.
- Three red stars: Damascus, Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor, or, alternatively, freedom, dignity and justice. The ministry also says the red honors martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Syria’s freedom.
Because the ministry gives alternative readings for the stars, it is more accurate to describe both than to present one as definitive.

How is the flag different from Syria’s other flag design?
For quick identification, compare the colors from top to bottom and count the stars. The Revolution flag is green-white-black with three red stars in the central stripe. A red-white-black design with two green stars is visually distinct. The Ministry of Culture’s page supports identification of the Revolution flag, but the sources cited here do not provide a complete catalog of historic Syrian flag variants.
