Tabaski is the common Senegalese name for Eid al-Kébir, or Eid al-Adha. In Senegal, the observance centers on prayer, sacrifice, sharing and family gathering, but communities do not necessarily celebrate on the same civil date or in identical ways.
What does Tabaski mean?
In Senegal, Tabaski is commonly used for Eid al-Kébir, also known as Eid al-Adha. At the 2026 celebration, Senegal’s Presidency described the festival through sacrifice, sharing and fellowship, and reported that President Bassirou Diomaye Faye attended public prayer at Dakar’s Great Mosque. In his message, he presented the story of Ibrahim’s sacrifice as a lesson in faith and civic responsibility. Presidency of Senegal, May 28, 2026.
That public framing does not mean every household observes in precisely the same way. The sources establish prayer, sacrifice, sharing and fellowship as central themes, not one universal household routine.

When is Tabaski in Senegal?
There is no single date to state without a year and place. In Senegal, the National Commission for the Observation of the Lunar Crescent (CONACOC) announced Thursday, May 28, 2026, as Tabaski. According to the Agence de Presse Sénégalaise (APS), the commission based its announcement on reports from 485 representatives; it said the crescent had not been sighted in any locality of the country. That date was not observed by every Senegalese Muslim community. APS reported on May 27, 2026, that a portion of the community had already celebrated, while most were expected to follow the May 28 date set by CONACOC. This is a documented example of variation in Senegal in 2026, not a rule about all Muslims or all years. APS, May 27, 2026.

How do prayer, sacrifice and family fit into the celebration?
Senegal’s Presidency’s account of the 2026 observance places public prayer and sacrifice alongside sharing and communion. The President’s message connected the sacrifice of Ibrahim with the idea of giving up something of oneself for a greater purpose. A 2025 presidential message likewise appealed to solidarity and fraternity among Senegalese in their diversity. Presidency of Senegal, June 7, 2025.
Family gathering is another important dimension. Associated Press reporting from 2024 described people returning from cities or abroad to spend the holiday with family. It also documented financial pressure on some households; those observations offer context for that report, not current price guidance or a claim that every family has the same experience. Why does Tabaski involve public livestock preparations?
In Senegal, preparing for the holiday includes the logistics of making livestock available at sale markets. A Government of Senegal interministerial report published May 8, 2026, reviewed the prior operation and recorded the following market-supply figures:

These are monitored-market supply figures reported in a 2026 planning document about the prior operation. They are not a count of animals sacrificed. The report identified sale-site capacity, feed and transport costs, and credit timing as operational challenges. Is Tabaski a public holiday in Senegal?
Yes. Senegal’s Law No. 74-52 of November 4, 1974, lists Tabaski among the country’s legal holidays observed as non-working days. This is a Senegal-specific legal status and should not be assumed to apply in other countries. Vie-Publique.sn, Law No. 74-52.
