The right choice depends on whether you want encyclopedic history, modern masterpieces, American art, unusual displays, architecture, or an easy free visit. This reader-focused shortlist draws on Travel + Leisure’s March 15, 2026 selection and matches each museum to the experience it serves best.

1. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City
Choose the Met when you want the widest historical sweep in one visit. Travel + Leisure describes its holdings as spanning roughly 5,000 years, allowing a day to move from ancient objects to European paintings and American interiors. The Temple of Dendur and the American Wing’s period rooms are especially useful anchors for a first visit.

The Met suits travelers who would rather sample many cultures and eras than pursue one specialist subject.
2. Getty Center, Los Angeles
The Getty Center is the strongest pick here for visitors who want European art in a setting that is part of the experience. Its emphasis runs from the Middle Ages through the early twentieth century, while the hilltop campus adds gardens, architecture and views over Los Angeles.
#1 Best Overall
Admission is free, but Getty requires a timed-entry reservation; check the current rules at the Getty visitor page. Do not confuse the Center in Brentwood with the Getty Villa near the coast. They are separate destinations with different locations, schedules and collections: the Villa focuses on Greek and Roman antiquities.
3. National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
For a major museum that costs nothing to enter, the National Gallery of Art is the clearest choice. Admission to the West Building, East Building and Sculpture Garden is always free, according to the museum’s visitor information.

The West Building concentrates on historic art; the East Building houses modern and contemporary holdings; and the Sculpture Garden provides an outdoor counterpoint. The institution says it holds more than 160,000 works of art on its About Us page—a museum-reported total, not a directly comparable ranking statistic.
Rank #2
Current visitor information lists daily hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., recommends public transportation and notes that there is no campus parking garage, although a limited number of accessible parking spaces are available. Recheck hours, access and any temporary closures before traveling.
4. Museum of Modern Art, New York City
MoMA is the focused choice for modern and contemporary art. Travel + Leisure highlights works associated with Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet and Warhol, giving first-time visitors an efficient route through some of the most recognizable developments in modern art.
It works best when your priority is twentieth- and twenty-first-century art rather than a broad survey of world history. Allow time to look beyond the headline paintings: the value of MoMA is the conversation between painting, sculpture, photography, film, design and newer media.
Rank #3
5. Art Institute of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago combines famous individual works with unusually broad coverage. Impressionist and Post-Impressionist rooms are a major draw, including Georges Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, while Grant Wood’s American Gothic provides an instantly recognizable American counterpoint.
Ancient, Asian and modern collections make the museum a good choice when different members of a group want different periods. It offers more range than a single-movement museum without sacrificing celebrated works that justify a dedicated visit.
6. Philadelphia Museum of Art
The Philadelphia Museum of Art suits visitors who want substantial historical collections and a memorable building. Travel + Leisure points to a reconstructed Japanese teahouse and a medieval cloister as architectural and cultural highlights, alongside the museum’s broad holdings.
The front steps associated with the film Rocky are part of the visit for many travelers, but the galleries—not the photo stop—are the reason to reserve serious time. Choose this museum when built environment, decorative arts and painting matter as much as individual masterpieces.

Boston’s MFA is a strong all-rounder with particular appeal for visitors who want American paintings, ancient Egyptian objects, Asian art and European Impressionists in the same institution. Its range supports both a carefully planned specialist visit and a flexible first day in the city.
Because the collection crosses cultures and centuries, decide in advance whether you are prioritizing a region, period or a short list of galleries. That prevents the museum’s scale from turning into an exhausting sequence of rooms.

8. Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia
The Barnes Foundation is the most distinctive museum experience on this list because its paintings are arranged in “ensembles,” not primarily in chronological rooms. Paintings appear alongside African sculpture, metalwork and Pennsylvania German furniture, encouraging visual comparisons across medium and culture.
Travel + Leisure reported 181 Renoirs, 69 Cézannes, 59 Matisses and 46 Picassos in 2026. Those figures are attributed to that article and have not been independently audited here; they should not be treated as directly comparable with other museums’ published totals. Choose the Barnes if you want to study relationships among objects rather than follow a conventional timeline.
9. Detroit Institute of Arts
The Detroit Institute of Arts is especially compelling for Diego Rivera’s Detroit Industry murals, which Travel + Leisure singles out as a signature experience. Around them is a collection that spans cultures and centuries, making the museum more than a one-artist destination.
It is a good fit for travelers who want a globally varied museum but also want one installation substantial enough to organize the visit. Check current gallery information before promising that a particular work will be on view.
10. Menil Collection, Houston
Houston’s Menil Collection covers a period from prehistory to the present, with modern and Surrealist art among its strengths. The Dan Flavin installation at Richmond Hall adds a dedicated light-art experience to the visit.
The Menil is best for visitors who prefer an intimate, highly considered collection to a giant encyclopedic museum. Its chronological range is broad, but its appeal comes from the quality and character of the groupings rather than sheer scale.

How to choose among the ten
Choose by collection period
- Ancient through modern: The Met, Art Institute of Chicago, MFA Boston or Menil Collection.
- Medieval and Renaissance European art: The Met, Getty Center or National Gallery West Building.
- Modern and contemporary: MoMA, the National Gallery East Building or Menil Collection.
- American art: The Met, Art Institute of Chicago, MFA Boston or Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Choose by setting
- Architecture and gardens: Getty Center.
- Historic architectural atmosphere: Philadelphia Museum of Art or the Met.
- Outdoor sculpture: National Gallery of Art.
- A compact, unconventional presentation: Barnes Foundation.
Choose by logistics
- Washington’s National Gallery is the only museum in this list explicitly identified as always free.
- Getty Center admission is free but requires timed entry.
- The Met and Getty Villa are separate-site planning questions; neither should be added casually to the same itinerary as its companion destination.
- For every museum, confirm hours, access, gallery closures, loans and exhibition dates before naming a specific work as viewable.
Planning a museum day
- Set one primary goal. Pick a period, artist, building or installation before you arrive.
- Check the official visitor page. Verify hours, reservations, entry procedures and accessibility on the museum’s own site.
- Map separate campuses. The National Gallery’s West and East Buildings, the Met and Met Cloisters, and Getty Center and Getty Villa are not interchangeable stops.
- Build in recovery time. Large collections reward a focused route with breaks more than an attempt to see every room.
- Recheck displays shortly before departure. Loans, conservation, gallery rotations and special exhibitions can change what is visible.
