Art Fight is a month-long online art game held every July. Participants are randomly divided into two themed teams, then “attack” opposing-team members by creating artwork of their original characters. Each accepted attack earns points for the artist’s team; the recipient may answer with a revenge drawing or pass the gift along by attacking someone else.

How Art Fight works

Art Fight combines character illustration, gift-giving and team competition. You create reference pages for your own original characters, browse other participants’ characters and make a new artwork featuring one of them. You upload that piece as an attack, crediting the character’s owner. The recipient gets the artwork as a gift, while your team receives points.

The official About page describes Art Fight as an annual art game lasting one month and beginning every July. The 2026 launch announcement likewise presents gifting—not winning—as the event’s central purpose.

The annual schedule

The current FAQ says the event starts every July 1 at 6:00 p.m. UTC unless Art Fight announces a change. The active season runs for about one month, ending around August 1. The rest of the year is the off-season, when you can prepare characters, improve references and explore the site without the live team campaign.

Teams and themes

Participants are placed on one of two themed teams. The FAQ describes random sorting, with additional randomized attempts and optional preregistration before the event. Team themes identify the sides, but your characters and attacks do not have to match a theme.

What counts as an attack?

An attack is a newly made artwork depicting an original character owned by another Art Fight participant. The normal target is someone on the opposing team. After you submit the piece, the recipient can respond with a revenge drawing of one of your characters, but revenge is optional; they can also attack a different participant.

Mass attacks

A mass attack includes multiple characters, often from several users, in one artwork. Art Fight’s rating guidance covers mass attacks as well as individual drawings, so check the current submission requirements before uploading a large group piece.

Friendly fire

Drawing a character owned by someone on your own team is called friendly fire. Under the Attack Rating FAQ’s June 2025 update, friendly-fire attacks receive 75% of the points they would otherwise earn. If maximizing team score matters to you, verify the target’s current team before submitting.

How to start Art Fight

  1. Create an account. You must be at least 13 years old. Artists of every skill level can participate.
  2. Build character reference pages. Upload clear, creator-made references for the original characters you want others to draw. Include useful details such as appearance, colors, clothing, personality and content boundaries.
  3. Preregister or join during the event. Follow the site’s current team-registration instructions and note your team after sorting.
  4. Browse opposing-team characters. Choose a character whose references give you enough information to make a thoughtful piece. Respect any owner notes about preferred content or subjects.
  5. Create a new artwork. Digital and traditional media are both accepted. Art Fight also provides guidance for 3D models, crafts, animation and mass attacks.
  6. Submit the attack. Select the character and owner correctly, upload the finished piece and provide the required credit. The site assigns the resulting points to your team.
  7. Keep participating. You can make multiple attacks, respond to gifts with revenge art or simply continue gifting without expecting a return.

Who can participate, and what can they make?

  • Age: participants must be 13 or older.
  • Skill: beginners and experienced artists are welcome; scoring is not a judgment of your artistic worth.
  • Media: traditional drawings and paintings can participate alongside digital art. The event also publishes rating guidance for 3D work, crafts, animation and mass attacks.
  • Tools: there is no required physical product or official supply kit. Use the materials and software appropriate to your medium.

Rules that can affect your submission

Use original or authorized material

Characters and uploaded art must be your own work or used with explicit permission and credit. Do not submit another person’s character, reference image or artwork as if you created or owned it.

Generative AI is prohibited

Art Fight’s General FAQ, last edited July 2, 2026, states that the event explicitly disallows all forms of generative AI, including generated imagery and writing. Plan to make the artwork and any accompanying creative content yourself.

Event art is generally noncommercial

The Spirit of Art Fight rules prohibit using art received or made during the event for profit, including character sales, trades and auctions, except for limited uses allowed with the relevant permission. Treat an attack as a gift, not as a commission or an asset for resale, and review the current exceptions before making any commercial use.

Check content and credit requirements

Use the site’s content filters and owner instructions when choosing a target. Accurate character attribution helps the recipient find your submission and ensures the points go to the intended account.

Is Art Fight an art trade?

Not exactly. An ordinary art trade is a negotiated exchange: two people agree that each will make something for the other. Art Fight is an open-ended gifting game. You may receive revenge art, but the recipient has no obligation to draw for you, and you can attack someone you have never met.

Feature Art Fight Ordinary art trade Prompt challenge
Basic exchange Voluntary gifts, with optional revenge Reciprocal exchange agreed in advance Artists respond to a shared prompt
Subject Another participant’s original character Whatever the partners agree Prompt-defined subject or concept
Competition Two teams and point scoring Usually none May be competitive, but no Art Fight team system
Timing One-month July season Set by the trading partners Set by the challenge organizer
Media Digital, traditional and other supported visual forms Agreed by the partners Defined by the challenge
Commercial limits Event work is generally noncommercial under the Spirit rules Set by the participants Set by the organizer or platform

How to make a good first attack

  • Choose a character with an understandable reference sheet rather than guessing at hidden details.
  • Read the owner’s notes before drawing sensitive subjects, alternate outfits or major redesigns.
  • Credit the character owner exactly as the submission form requests.
  • Match your medium to the time available: a finished sketch, painting, craft or animation can all be meaningful gifts when they follow the rules.
  • Save your source files and proof of permission when using anything that is not entirely your own.

Can I draw traditionally?

Yes. Traditional artwork is accepted alongside digital work, provided it is photographed or scanned clearly enough for submission.

Must every attack be a revenge?

No. Revenge is an optional response to receiving an attack. You may give art to another participant without having received anything first.

Can I sell my Art Fight artwork?

Generally no. The Spirit rules prohibit profit-making uses of art made or received during the event, including sales, trades and auctions, subject to limited permission-based exceptions.
