The 2025 colors of the year come from several independent authorities: Pantone chose PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, while paint brands selected Cinnamon Slate, Rumors, Quietude, Encore, and other distinct shades. Sherwin-Williams issued a nine-color capsule led by Grounded instead of naming one single winner.

That means “Color of the Year” can refer to a global color-trend announcement or a manufacturer’s own paint collection. The selections share an interest in warmth, comfort, earthiness, and richness, but they are not interchangeable paint formulas.

Key takeaways
- Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year is PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, a soft, warming brown.
- Benjamin Moore selected Cinnamon Slate 2113-40, Behr selected Rumors, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams selected Quietude HGSW6212, and Valspar selected Encore 8002-45G.
- Sherwin-Williams did not name one standalone shade; its 2025 Color Capsule contains nine coordinated colors led by Grounded SW 6089.
- The shared 2025 direction is generally warm, earthy, comforting, and rich, but the major selections also include sage-like blue-green and saturated navy.
- Color names do not establish cross-brand matches, so test the exact manufacturer’s physical sample in the room before buying paint.
What are the 2025 colors of the year?
There is no single universal list of the 2025 colors of the year: Pantone chose PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, while major paint brands made separate selections, including Benjamin Moore Cinnamon Slate, Behr Rumors, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Quietude, and Valspar Encore. Sherwin-Williams selected a nine-color capsule led by Grounded rather than one shade.
The distinction matters when you are choosing house paint. Pantone’s announcement is a global color-standard and cultural-trend selection. Paint companies are naming colors from their own product systems, formulas, finishes, and distribution networks. A color name alone does not mean that two brands’ products are interchangeable.
What is Pantone’s Color of the Year 2025?
Pantone’s Color of the Year 2025 is PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, a mellow brown that Pantone presents as warm, comforting, and connected with simple pleasures. Pantone announced the selection on December 1, 2024, through the Pantone Color of the Year 2025 announcement.

Pantone Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman described the choice this way: “Underpinned by our desire for every day pleasures, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence.” Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman also connected the selection with comfort and “the indulgence of simple pleasures that we can gift and share with others.” Those statements are Pantone’s design interpretation, not independent evidence that the color improves mood or sells better than other shades.
For readers who need a physical reference, Pantone’s official product listing identifies the color as PANTONE 17-1230 TPG Mocha Mousse. Pantone’s current official plastic-chip product page describes more than 4,000 colors corresponding with its Graphics and Fashion, Home + Interiors systems; that color-reference system should not be treated as a ready-made wall-paint formula.
How do the major 2025 paint colors compare?
The major 2025 paint colors cover several hue families rather than repeating one exact brown. The table below preserves each brand’s identifier where the researched announcement provides one.

What is Benjamin Moore’s 2025 color?
Benjamin Moore’s 2025 color is Cinnamon Slate 2113-40, a heathered plum and velvety brown. Benjamin Moore announced the selection in October 2024 and describes the shade as balancing enduring style with modern sensibility in its official Cinnamon Slate announcement.
Benjamin Moore Director of Color Marketing & Design Andrea Magno called Cinnamon Slate “an inviting hue that offers enduring style and modern sensibility.” The shade sits near the warm, nuanced end of the 2025 conversation, but Cinnamon Slate is still a Benjamin Moore paint color—not proof of an exact match for Pantone Mocha Mousse or another company’s brown.
Benjamin Moore also announced a ten-hue Color Trends 2025 palette. The ten-hue figure refers to Benjamin Moore’s complete palette, not ten different winners of the Color of the Year title.
What is Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 Color of the Year?
Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 selection is a nine-color Color Capsule, not one solitary Color of the Year. Grounded SW 6089 is the lead earth-toned example, and the capsule also includes Sunbleached, White Snow, Malabar, Bosc Pear, Chartreuse, Rain Cloud, Clove, and Mauve Finery. The Sherwin-Williams 2025 announcement explains the capsule format.
Sherwin-Williams Director of Color Marketing Sue Wadden said, “We selected this palette of coordinating colors to provide plenty of range and flexibility.” That format is useful when you want a complete room-to-room scheme instead of choosing a single headline shade. Grounded can anchor a warm neutral plan, while the other capsule colors introduce lighter neutrals, green-yellow, blue-gray, plum, and additional earthy depth.

Behr Rumors is a deep ruby red selected to make a strong statement in a space. Behr’s official announcement is available in its 2025 Color of the Year release. Rumors is therefore a stronger statement color than the quieter brown and plum selections; use it where a rich focal point is welcome rather than assuming it will behave like a neutral throughout a bright open-plan home.

HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams Quietude HGSW6212 is a sage-like blue-green included in the brand’s ten-color Naturally Refined collection. The official collection announcement supports the exact name and code. Quietude broadens the year’s palette beyond brown and red with a cooler, nature-associated direction.
Valspar Encore 8002-45G is a saturated navy-blue selection. Valspar announced Encore in its official 2025 Color of the Year release. Encore can create contrast against warm whites and natural materials, but its saturation and depth make a test area especially important in rooms with limited daylight.
Rust-Oleum Warm Caramel is the lead shade in the company’s 2025 Color Watch palette, which connects trend color with DIY coating products. Rust-Oleum’s 2025 newsroom article is the relevant source. Warm Caramel belongs in a coating and refinishing conversation rather than being assumed to be a wall-paint equivalent to Mocha Mousse.

The 2025 announcements collectively lean toward grounded, emotionally reassuring color: browns, plums, warm neutrals, rich reds, and earthy shades appear repeatedly. Pantone emphasizes comfort and simple pleasures, Benjamin Moore emphasizes an approachable and nuanced plum-brown, and Sherwin-Williams emphasizes coordination and flexibility.
The pattern is a synthesis of separate brand announcements, not evidence that the paint industry made one coordinated decision. Quietude contributes sage-like blue-green, and Encore contributes saturated navy, so the 2025 story is broader than brown. A practical description is “warmth, nature, richness, and versatility,” with different brands expressing those ideas through different colors and formats.
Which 2025 color is best for a living room?
The best 2025 color for a living room depends on the room’s light, furnishings, size, and the mood you want; no researched source establishes one universally best or most popular choice. Mocha Mousse, Cinnamon Slate, and Grounded are sensible starting points for a grounded, enveloping room, while Quietude offers a softer blue-green direction and Encore or Rumors creates a more dramatic focal wall.

| If you want the room to feel | Start by testing | Why | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm and comforting | Mocha Mousse or Grounded | Both point toward earthy brown-based schemes | Dark flooring and low light can make warm shades feel heavier |
| Nuanced and intimate | Cinnamon Slate | Its plum-brown character adds depth without being a plain neutral | Nearby upholstery and flooring can emphasize its purple or brown side |
| Serene and nature-inspired | Quietude | The sage-like blue-green shifts the palette cooler | Artificial light can change how green or blue the color appears |
| Bold and dramatic | Rumors or Encore | Ruby red and saturated navy create strong focal points | Large areas may need more daylight or balancing light neutrals |
Are Mocha Mousse and Cinnamon Slate the same color?
No. Mocha Mousse and Cinnamon Slate are separate selections from separate systems, and their names do not establish an exact match. Mocha Mousse is Pantone’s PANTONE 17-1230 reference, while Cinnamon Slate is Benjamin Moore 2113-40; paint formula, sheen, substrate, lighting, and surrounding colors can make the two appear even more different in a room.

A Pantone reference, a Benjamin Moore formula, and a Sherwin-Williams formula are not automatically interchangeable. If a design requires a cross-brand approximation, compare physical samples and identify the specific product and finish rather than relying on the shared impression of “warm” or “earthy.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare 2025 paint colors from different brands?
Compare the exact products in the room where they will be used. Digital previews and printed cards are useful for narrowing choices, but they are approximations; finish, sheen, primer, substrate, lighting, surrounding colors, and camera processing can materially change the appearance.
- Choose the brand first. Decide whether you are buying Benjamin Moore, Behr, Sherwin-Williams, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, Valspar, Rust-Oleum, or a Pantone reference product. Do not begin with a color name alone.
- Record the full identifier. Keep the exact code—such as Cinnamon Slate 2113-40, Quietude HGSW6212, Encore 8002-45G, Grounded SW 6089, or PANTONE 17-1230—along with the intended finish.
- Obtain physical samples. Use Pantone’s physical Mocha Mousse reference for color-standard comparison and the selected paint brand’s own sample card or paint sample for a wall-paint decision. Useful paint color sample swatches and paint sample cards let you compare the actual reference instead of trusting a browser display, but one brand’s swatch does not match every manufacturer’s formula.
- Test in more than one location. Place a large sample near trim, flooring, furniture, and the main light source. Check it in morning, afternoon, and artificial light.
- Live with the sample. Strong colors such as Rumors and Encore can dominate a large wall, while dark brown or plum shades can absorb light. View the sample from across the room before committing.
- Buy the final quantity only after approval. Confirm the product, sheen, substrate preparation, and coverage with the paint retailer or manufacturer before purchasing gallons.
What should painters do before starting a 2025 color project?
For a wall, cabinet, furniture, exterior, or specialty coating project, match the sample to the actual surface and product category. A wall-paint sample is not a substitute for a cabinet coating, and a Rust-Oleum coating color should not be assumed to perform like an interior architectural paint. Prepare the substrate, confirm primer compatibility, and use the manufacturer’s instructions for the chosen product.
Keep the project practical: painter’s tape, a small brush or roller, a drop cloth, and a sample board can make testing cleaner and more portable. The important purchase is the brand-specific sample, not a collection of products chosen before the color and surface have been verified.
What should you remember about the 2025 colors of the year?
The 2025 colors of the year are a group of independent selections, not one universal paint standard. Pantone’s Mocha Mousse is the most globally recognizable headline choice, but Benjamin Moore, Behr, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, Valspar, Sherwin-Williams, and Rust-Oleum each offer a different shade or palette. Select the manufacturer, test its exact sample in the real space, and then decide whether the color works with the room’s light and materials.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Mocha Mousse and Cinnamon Slate the same color?
No. Pantone’s Mocha Mousse is a color-standard reference, while Cinnamon Slate is Benjamin Moore’s own paint color with its own formula and code. The names and warm appearance do not establish an exact match.
What is Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 Color of the Year?
Sherwin-Williams selected a nine-color 2025 Color Capsule led by Grounded SW 6089 rather than naming one standalone Color of the Year. The capsule also includes Sunbleached, White Snow, Malabar, Bosc Pear, Chartreuse, Rain Cloud, Clove, and Mauve Finery.
Which 2025 color is best for a living room?
There is no universally best 2025 living-room color. Test Mocha Mousse, Cinnamon Slate, or Grounded for a warm grounded room; Quietude for a sage-like blue-green atmosphere; or Rumors and Encore for a stronger statement.

How do I compare paint colors from different brands?
Test the exact brand-specific sample in the intended room, near the trim, flooring, furnishings, and primary light source. Check the sample at different times of day because screen displays and printed cards are only approximations.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year is Mocha Mousse, but the best paint choice depends on the brand, formula, room, lighting, and finish. Treat the named colors as separate references, not automatic matches, and test a physical sample before buying the full amount.
