The best AI filter app depends on what you want your photo to become. For painterly effects, start with Prisma; for a polished selfie or generated portrait, compare Lensa and FaceApp; for an old, blurry portrait, try Remini. Picsart is the broadest creative toolkit, Lightroom suits controlled photo editing, and Canva makes more sense when the finished image needs a layout, text, or branded design.
“AI filter” covers very different operations: painting-like style transfer, face retouching, generated avatars, image restoration, background replacement, and AI-assisted adjustments. A result can look more polished without being more faithful to the original. Choose by task, keep the unedited file, and check the export and subscription terms before committing.
Quick picks: which AI photo app should you choose?
| App | Best for | Choose it when | Not ideal when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prisma | Artistic filters | You want a photograph turned into a painterly or illustrative image. | You need natural retouching, archival accuracy, or a conventional photo workflow. |
| Lensa | Portrait polish and AI avatars | You want selfie retouching, filters, cleanup, and generated portrait styles in one app. | You need guaranteed identity preservation or a photographer’s RAW and catalog workflow. |
| FaceApp | Face, hair, makeup, and age transformations | You want to preview appearance changes or make a portrait-focused edit. | You mainly edit landscapes, product shots, or designed graphics. |
| Remini | Enhancing old or blurry portraits | You want a quick, sharper-looking version of a low-resolution image. | Historical or documentary accuracy matters more than visual polish. |
| Picsart | All-purpose creative editing | You need filters alongside removal, replacement, templates, stickers, or social graphics. | You only want one focused portrait or art filter. |
| Adobe Lightroom | Controlled, repeatable photo editing | You want manual refinement and a broader editing and organization workflow. | You want instant novelty effects without learning an editing tool. |
| Canva | Photo-plus-design projects | The result needs text, templates, layouts, or branded content. | You want a specialist face editor or restoration tool. |
These are use-case recommendations based on the products’ stated feature sets, not a lab ranking or a claim that one app produces the most realistic image. Filter availability, export quality, and paid features can vary between app versions and platforms.

What counts as an AI filter app?
The label can refer to anything from a visual effect to a tool that generates or reconstructs image content. A basic color preset or overlay is not necessarily AI just because it appears in an app marketed around AI.
- Style transfer changes the image’s visual language, for example toward painting, watercolor, illustration, or comics. It may repaint fine textures rather than preserve them.
- Portrait retouching changes skin, facial features, makeup, hair, or lighting. A subtle polish and a major appearance transformation are different kinds of edits.
- Avatar generation creates new portrait interpretations from supplied selfies. Treat these as generated images, not faithful photographs.
- Enhancement and restoration sharpens, denoises, enlarges, repairs, or colorizes an image. Missing facial information may be reconstructed rather than recovered.
- Generative editing removes or replaces objects and backgrounds, or extends an image. New content can introduce mismatched lighting, shadows, edges, or text.
- AI-assisted traditional editing can identify subjects, create masks, or help adjust an image while leaving room for manual control.
For a painting-oriented result, style transfer is the relevant category. It is useful when transformation is the point, but it can simplify a face, blur small textures, or distort lettering, glasses, jewelry, hands, and repeating patterns. Compare the output with the source instead of assuming that an artistic filter preserves every detail.
Prisma: best for painterly and illustrative filters
Prisma is the most direct pick when you want a photo to read as an artwork rather than a naturally edited photograph. Its U.S. App Store listing presents it as a photo editor with filters and shows premium and one-time access entries. Several price entries appear at once, so check the in-app purchase screen for the offer and billing terms available to your account.
What it is good at
Use a style-transfer app such as Prisma for a deliberate change of visual character: a portrait that feels illustrated, a landscape with a painterly treatment, or an image intended as expressive social content. This is a better fit than a beauty editor when you want the whole photograph to look transformed.

Trade-offs and poor fit
A filter may reinterpret rather than simply recolor the image. Small faces in group shots, printed words, fine architecture, and intricate background patterns can lose definition or become inconsistent. Prisma is not the natural choice for subtle skin retouching, photo restoration, or organizing a photographer’s collection.
The listing does not establish a single universal price or comparable export limits. Check current availability and purchase terms in the U.S. App Store listing, and do not assume the same offer applies on another platform or in another region.

Lensa: best for portrait polish plus avatar-style edits
Lensa combines portrait retouching and color effects with unwanted-object removal and Magic Avatars, according to its U.S. App Store listing. It is a reasonable choice if you want both conventional selfie edits and more stylized portrait outputs rather than a dedicated painting filter alone.
What it is good at
Consider Lensa for a polished portrait, a changed color treatment, a cleanup edit, or an avatar-style image. Its wider set of portrait functions makes it more versatile for selfies than a specialist art-filter app. An avatar can be attractive while still changing details that make the person recognizable; use it as a creative interpretation, not a documentary likeness.

At the time of the U.S. App Store listing referenced here, listed in-app purchase examples included $2.99 for one week of unlimited access, $29.99 for unlimited access, and a $35.99 membership. These are storefront examples, not a guaranteed current price or a complete statement of billing terms. Prices and offers can vary by account, platform, and region; check the purchase screen and renewal terms before subscribing. The U.S. iOS listing requires iOS 18 or later. Android is available through Google Play, but features and requirements may differ.
Privacy note and poor fit
Apple’s listing says the developer may process user content for customer support and identifies categories including identifiers, purchases, usage data, and diagnostics. Lensa’s privacy policy is dated May 6, 2026: read the policy. These are developer disclosures, not an independent audit. Avoid uploading a sensitive portrait unless you are comfortable with the applicable handling terms. Lensa is a poor fit if your priority is RAW editing, cataloging, or a guarantee that a generated portrait will preserve identity.
FaceApp: best for face, hair, makeup, and age changes
FaceApp is positioned around photorealistic portrait edits. Its U.S. App Store listing describes more than 60 filters and features including facial retouching, hair color and hairstyle changes, makeup, facial-feature adjustments, lighting controls, and before-and-after comparison. That makes it a more focused option than a general design editor when the edit concerns a person’s appearance.
What it is good at
Use it to experiment with hair or makeup, preview an age effect, or apply portrait polish. Its focus is direct face transformation rather than turning a full scene into a painting. A photorealistic look does not guarantee that the result is faithful to the original person: facial-feature and age edits can change identity as well as presentation.

Price, platform, and privacy
The U.S. App Store listing requires iOS 17 or later and shows FaceApp PRO purchase entries from $10 to $100, but the listing does not clearly identify every billing interval. Do not infer a monthly or annual price from those entries; check the live purchase screen. An Android listing is also available, with platform-specific features and requirements to verify. Apple’s privacy label lists identifiers, usage data, purchases, and diagnostics as data that may be collected but not linked to the user; consult the FaceApp privacy policy for the company’s fuller explanation. This app is a poor fit for landscapes, product photos, broad layout work, or users who do not want appearance-altering edits.
Remini: best for enhancing old or blurry portraits
Remini is centered on enhancing and restoring old, blurry, damaged, and low-resolution images. It is useful when the immediate goal is a clearer-looking face for viewing or sharing, but “sharper” should not be confused with “more historically accurate.”
What it can and cannot restore
Enhancement systems may construct plausible eyes, teeth, skin, hair, glasses, jewelry, or other details that were too blurred or absent to recover from the original. A face can look newly crisp while the rest of the picture remains soft or inconsistent. For family history, journalism, legal records, or other documentary purposes, preserve the original scan and identify the edited copy as AI-enhanced from the original. Do not treat generated detail as evidence of what the source image truly showed.
Price, compatibility, and privacy
Visible U.S. App Store examples included Remini Pro Weekly at $9.99, Remini Lite Weekly at $7.99, and a $9.99 one-month option; prices can change and differ by offer or platform. The listing offers weekly, monthly, and yearly subscription options, so confirm the specific billing period and auto-renewal terms before starting. Its current iOS compatibility requirement should also be checked in the listing. Apple’s privacy label lists photos or videos under app functionality, identifiers used for tracking, and contact information linked to the user. Review the developer privacy policy before uploading personal or family images. Remini is a poor choice when a visually plausible reconstruction would be less useful than a faithful, imperfect original.
Picsart: best for broad AI editing and social content
Picsart combines AI filters and style transfer with face retouching, background and object removal, AI Replace, templates, stickers, text, design tools, and batch editing. That breadth makes it useful when the job extends beyond applying one effect—for example, preparing a social post or thumbnail as well as editing its photo.
Plans and feature trade-offs
The pricing page lists AI filters, image generation, face retouching, removal and replacement tools, style transfer, and batch editing. Its Pro plan includes batch editing of up to 50 images and 100 GB of cloud storage, with access across mobile and web platforms. On the plan page as observed August 18, 2026, Pro displayed $10.50 per month billed yearly and Ultra $37.50 per month billed yearly. These are plan-page signals, not necessarily the final mobile-store price. The page also says monthly subscription credits expire at the end of the billing cycle, so check credit allowances and expiry conditions for the plan you are considering.

Who should skip it
A large creative toolkit can be more platform than you need for a single portrait filter. Prisma is more focused on artistic effects, FaceApp on appearance changes, and Remini on restoration. Generated background or object replacements can also create continuity errors—such as a shadow or reflection that no longer matches—so inspect the whole composition before publishing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Lightroom: best for photographers who want control
Adobe Lightroom is better understood as a photo-editing and organization workflow with AI-assisted tools than as a novelty-filter specialist. Adobe offers it across desktop, web, and mobile; its plans and pricing are handled through Creative Cloud.
Choose Lightroom when you want to refine an edit manually, build a consistent color treatment across a set, organize images, or move between phone and desktop work. That control makes it more suitable for repeatable photographic results than an avatar generator or a one-tap face transformation. It is less suitable if you want a fast painting effect with no editing decisions or a simple filter-only purchase. Verify current plan details with Adobe; the cited pages do not establish one filter-specific price.
Canva: best when the edited photo is part of a design
Canva is a credible choice for a poster, thumbnail, invitation, branded social post, or other image where layout and text matter as much as the photo effect. It is a design platform with photo AI rather than a dedicated portrait or restoration app.
Canva’s pricing page redirected to a localized regional edition when referenced, so no U.S. price is quoted here. Confirm your region’s current plan and feature availability before subscribing. If the task is only face retouching, painterly style transfer, or old-photo enhancement, a specialist app is likely a better fit.
Choose an app by the photo you are editing
| Photo or project | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Selfie or solo portrait | FaceApp or Lensa | FaceApp focuses on appearance changes; Lensa combines retouching with filters and generated portrait styles. |
| Group portrait | Lightroom for restrained edits; Prisma for an intentional art treatment | Small faces may lose detail in strong effects, so inspect each person after processing. |
| Landscape | Prisma for a painterly result; Lightroom for controlled color and refinement | Choose between transformation and a more conventional editing workflow. |
| Old family portrait | Remini, with the original retained | It is designed for enhancement, but reconstructed facial details are not proof of original detail. |
| Product photo | Lightroom for controlled editing; Picsart for removal or compositing | Inspect edges, shadows, and reflections after any generative replacement. |
| Social graphic or thumbnail | Picsart or Canva | Both suit projects that combine an image with design elements; Canva emphasizes layouts and text. |
| Professional headshot | Lightroom for restrained refinement | It leaves room for manual control; avoid face changes that no longer represent the subject accurately. |
| Pet portrait | Prisma for stylization; Lightroom for conventional edits | Use the artistic option when a transformed look is the goal, rather than expecting face-focused tools to suit every subject. |
Privacy, identity, and subscription risks to check
Uploading personal photos
Before sending an image to an app, check its privacy policy and app-store privacy disclosures for photo or video handling, identifiers, tracking, retention, deletion, and model-training terms. Those disclosures are supplied by developers and are not independent audits. The information available for the apps above does not establish a universal local/offline mode or a single retention rule across their platforms. Do not assume a photo is deleted immediately unless the applicable policy explicitly says so. Children’s images, identity documents, private portraits, and family archives deserve extra care.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIdentity and authenticity
- Beauty edits can smooth skin or change facial proportions; decide whether you want retouching or an altered appearance.
- Avatars are generated interpretations rather than photographic records.
- Restoration can invent plausible detail, especially in eyes, teeth, hair, accessories, and small text.
- Art filters can distort lettering, hands, jewelry, glasses, repeating patterns, and faces in the background.
- Generative removal and replacement may leave incorrect edges, shadows, lighting, reflections, or repeated objects.
Free downloads, trials, and renewals
Free to download does not necessarily mean that the features or exports you want are free. Check whether a filter, generation, higher-resolution export, or watermark-free file requires payment. Before starting a trial or subscription, confirm its duration, price, billing interval, renewal date, and cancellation route in the store or account that will bill you. App-store, Google Play, and web prices can differ, as can regional taxes and introductory offers. Do not assume a price shown for one plan or platform applies to another.
Quick Recap
A safer workflow for better-looking results
- Duplicate the original. Keep a separate copy before editing, especially for family archives, work images, and camera originals.
- Start with a clear source. Portrait tools generally have more to work with when the face is visible, reasonably large, and not heavily obscured.
- Try the least destructive edit first. Adjust crop, exposure, color, or filter intensity before changing facial features or generating a new scene.
- Use a lighter effect when naturalism matters. Reduce the strength from the default preview and compare the result with the source.
- Inspect the image at full size. Look closely at eyes, teeth, glasses, earrings, hairlines, fingers, lettering, and background edges.
- Compare before and after. Use the app’s comparison control if available, or open the saved original alongside the edit.
- Check the export before relying on it. Confirm resolution, watermark, file format, and whether the edited file saves locally or through the app’s cloud workflow.
- Label documentary restorations. For an archival copy, a note such as “AI-enhanced from original scan” helps distinguish visual enhancement from recovered fact.
