Photopea is the best free online image editor for most people who want to edit a photo, work with layers, or open a Photoshop-style project without installing software. For simpler edits, try Pixlr; for social graphics and flyers, choose Adobe Express or Canva. Fotor can be useful for casual effects, but its free exports are watermarked. For background removal alone, remove.bg is the specialist option.
There is no single winner for every job: a photo editor, a design platform, and a one-click background remover solve different problems. The key is to check what “free” means for the task you need—especially whether the editor limits AI credits, requires an account, or puts a watermark on exports.
Quick comparison
| Tool | Best for | What its free option means | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photopea | Layer-based editing and Photoshop-style workflows | Core editor runs in the browser; the vendor says files stay on your device | More technical than beginner-focused tools; performance depends on your device |
| Pixlr | Quick edits, effects, and accessible AI tools | Free access is subject to product and feature limits; AI tools may use credits | Features, saves, and AI access vary by tier |
| Adobe Express | Social posts, flyers, and branded graphics | Free plan includes standard editing and limited assets; no credit card is required | Some assets and capabilities require Premium; not a full Photoshop substitute |
| Canva | Template-led layouts and graphics | Useful design tools are available, but check current plan and export details | Design-first rather than a detailed photo-manipulation workflow |
| Fotor | Casual enhancement, portraits, and effects | Basic plan is free, but listed JPG, PNG, and PDF exports are watermarked | Watermarks, limited AI credits, and storage |
| remove.bg | Removing an image background | A specialist service with free-use limits; check its current pricing and export terms | Not a general-purpose editor; images are handled by an online service |
Plan terms and interfaces can change. Check the linked official plan pages before relying on a particular export option, quota, or price.

Best overall: Photopea
Photopea is the strongest all-purpose choice when you mean image editor in the traditional sense: it has a canvas, layers, selections, masks, adjustment tools, and workflows for raster and vector graphics. Its official learning guide covers topics including layers, smart objects, selections, color spaces, and exporting. That makes it a better fit than a template platform for retouching, compositing, or continuing work on a layered project.
Photopea’s distinctive advantage is local processing. The company says the editor runs on your device, does not upload your files, and can keep working offline after the page has loaded. Treat that as Photopea’s stated behavior, not a general rule for browser editors. Local processing can be useful for sensitive images, but the browser still needs enough memory and processing power, and you should save your work rather than rely on an open tab.
Choose Photopea if you need layers or masks, want a Photoshop-like interface, or need to edit a complex image without installing a desktop program. Skip it if you only need a quick crop and find a dense interface frustrating, or if you are working on a small phone screen. Photopea itself recommends a large screen and a precise pointing device for comfortable use.

A safe basic workflow in Photopea
- Open Photopea and use its file-opening command to select your image or project file.
- For resizing, change the image dimensions rather than just the canvas dimensions. Keep the proportions locked unless you intend to stretch the image.
- Crop to the required ratio if the destination calls for one. Otherwise, avoid cropping away useful detail too early.
- Make adjustments or use a layer and mask when you want more control over what changes.
- Export a copy in the format you need. Keep the editable project if you may need to change layers later.
- Reopen the exported file and check its dimensions, appearance, and transparency.
For a transparent cutout, inspect fine edges such as hair, fur, glass, and shadows; automatic selections can leave halos or remove detail. A contrasting background makes edge problems easier to spot.
Best for quick, approachable edits: Pixlr
Pixlr offers separate Express and Editor-style experiences. Express is the more approachable route for quick corrections and effects; the more advanced editor is a better fit when you want additional manual control. Pixlr also promotes tools such as background and object removal, upscaling, and generative fill.
The catch is that “free Pixlr” does not mean every feature is unlimited. Its pricing page describes paid tiers with different AI-credit allowances and other restrictions. Before building a workflow around an AI feature, check whether it consumes credits and whether export or saving is limited on the free option. The listed subscription prices are regional and may change, so check the price shown for your country rather than assuming a price quoted elsewhere applies to you.

Choose Pixlr if you want a faster learning curve than Photopea for everyday corrections, effects, or occasional AI-assisted edits. If you need detailed layer work, compare its editor with Photopea. If you need AI actions repeatedly, check the credit terms first.
Best for social graphics: Adobe Express
Adobe Express is strongest when the finished image needs to become a social post, flyer, presentation, or marketing graphic. It combines standard photo editing with templates, fonts, and design assets, so you can move from adjusting a picture to composing a finished layout in one place.
Adobe’s plan information lists a free tier with standard photo, video, and document editing, limited assets, fonts, 5 GB of storage, and browser and mobile access; Adobe says no credit card is required for the Free plan. Premium adds more assets and storage, brand kits, one-click resizing, and expanded features. Availability and pricing are localized, so confirm what your account and region include. If a template element is marked premium, replace it or check the plan before expecting a clean free export.

Use Express when layout, branding, and speed matter more than precise pixel-level retouching. It is not the closest match for a layered Photoshop-style workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best design-first alternative: Canva
Canva is a good choice for thumbnails, invitations, presentations, social posts, and other template-led designs. It can handle photo-related tasks within a broader design workflow, but it should not be confused with a full layer-based editor when you need precise selections, complex compositing, or detailed retouching.
Before choosing a template or finishing a design, check whether its elements and the export options you need are included in your current plan. Canva’s pricing page and photo-editor page are the right places to confirm current terms; plan limits and feature availability can change.
Best Value
- SUPERIOR 4K IMAGE QUALITY: The CUNPU 4K monitor boasts a 27-inch display with four times the pixel density of Full HD (8 million pixels), providing an enhanced visual experience. With 100% DCI-P3 color coverage, it offers a rich and vibrant color spectrum. The monitor displays up to 1.07 billion colors, with a brightness of 300 nits, a 1200:1 static contrast ratio, and a pixel pitch of 163 PPI. This ensures sharp and detailed images
- More Tasks, Zero Clutter : Picture-by-Picture (PBP) lets you run two full-resolution inputs side-by-side—perfect for comparing drafts, coding while referencing docs, or gaming while chatting. Picture-in-Picture (PiP) shrinks the second source to a corner, so you can monitor streams or dashboards while you work. One monitor, double the productivity.
- SEE MORE CONTENT FROM EVERY ANGLE: This monitor has a 3-sided ultra-thin bezel and features an IPS panel with crystal clear color quality. The wide 178° viewing angle ensures that every user gets a great viewing experience from any angle, making it easy to share work or content.

Best for casual enhancement, with a watermark warning: Fotor
Fotor focuses on accessible enhancement, portrait effects, templates, collages, and AI-assisted tools. Its Basic plan is listed as free, with basic editing, limited effects and AI credits, 512 MB of cloud storage, and 30-day creation storage. The important drawback is explicit: Fotor says Basic exports in JPG, PNG, and PDF are watermarked.
That makes Fotor a reasonable place to experiment or make a casual edit, but a poor default for a client-ready image or any output that must be watermark-free. Check the current plan details before investing time in a project you need to export cleanly.
Best specialist tool for background removal: remove.bg
remove.bg is built around removing image backgrounds; it is not a substitute for an editor with layers, color adjustments, and layout tools. It can make sense when a cutout is the whole job or when a business needs an integration or API workflow. For ordinary editing after the cutout, use a full editor such as Photopea.
Because remove.bg processes images through an online service, it is not the same privacy model as Photopea’s stated local processing. Before uploading confidential or client images, review the service’s terms and settings, including its image-improvement-program choice, and decide whether the workflow is appropriate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose by the job, not by the feature list
- Need layers, masks, or a Photoshop-style project? Start with Photopea.
- Need a quick crop, correction, or effect? Try Pixlr Express; use Photopea if you need more manual control.
- Making a social post, flyer, or branded asset? Use Adobe Express or Canva, then check for premium elements before export.
- Want AI enhancement or object removal? Compare Pixlr and Fotor, but check credits, export restrictions, and image-upload practices first.
- Need a background removed and little else? Use a dedicated service such as remove.bg for convenience, or try a general editor if privacy or manual refinement matters more.
- Editing a sensitive image? Prefer an explicitly local workflow such as Photopea’s documented one, and avoid uploading the original to a cloud service unless its terms suit your situation.
- Need a clean free export? Verify the final download itself. Fotor Basic, for example, lists watermarked exports despite being free.
How to edit an image online without losing the original
- Keep a copy of the original. Work on a duplicate so you can restart or compare results.
- Match the editor to the deliverable. Use a photo editor for image manipulation and a design platform for layouts.
- Open or import the file. Check whether the service processes it locally or uploads it, especially if the image is confidential.
- Crop and resize deliberately. Use the destination’s aspect ratio and pixel requirements. Resizing changes image dimensions; changing canvas size changes the surrounding work area.
- Make corrections before adding decoration. Adjust exposure, color, and sharpness while checking that skin tones, product colors, or other important details still look right.
- Use layers or masks for selective edits. They make it easier to revise a change without permanently altering the whole image.
- Inspect at 100% zoom. Look for halos, artifacts, softness, and unwanted changes, particularly around cutouts and AI edits.
- Export for the intended use. JPG is usually suitable for photographs; PNG is useful for transparency or graphics with crisp text. Keep a layered project separately if you need future edits.
- Check the exported file. Reopen it to confirm the dimensions, transparency, quality, and watermark status are what you expected.
When a browser editor is not enough
Browser tools are convenient, but they are not automatically the best choice for every workflow. Large images and complicated layered files can strain browser memory; older devices may lag or reload a tab. A phone can be adequate for a simple crop, but is awkward for precise selections and multi-layer work. Cloud editors also need a reliable connection, while local editors still need enough device resources.
Consider desktop software instead when you need to process a large photo library, manage RAW files, automate repetitive work, do color-managed print production, or work reliably offline. For a single crop, resize, correction, cutout, or social graphic, an online editor is usually the more convenient starting point.
