There is no single best graphic-design application. Adobe Photoshop is the strongest default for professional raster editing, Illustrator for vector artwork, Affinity by Canva for a free desktop suite, Figma for collaborative UI and product design, CorelDRAW for print and signage, Canva for fast marketing graphics, and Krita or Adobe Fresco for digital painting.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The right choice depends on what you are making: a retouched photograph, scalable logo, four-page brochure, app interface, social campaign, or painted illustration. Comparing Photoshop and Canva as if they were direct substitutes produces a misleading buying guide. This one separates the tools by workflow, file requirements, collaboration needs, platform, print production, and subscription tolerance.

For professional designers, the most practical answer is often a stack rather than one application: Illustrator plus Photoshop plus InDesign, Figma plus Photoshop, Affinity plus Figma, or CorelDRAW plus PHOTO-PAINT. A template tool can then handle high-volume social variations without becoming the place where the original artwork is built.

What graphic-design software actually means

The phrase covers several different types of application:

  • Raster editors work with pixels. They are best for photographs, retouching, compositing, texture, painting, and image-based effects. Photoshop, GIMP, and the pixel side of Affinity belong here.
  • Vector editors use mathematically defined paths. They are best for logos, icons, diagrams, lettering, packaging artwork, and illustrations that must scale from a small label to a billboard. Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape, and Affinity’s vector tools are examples.
  • Page-layout applications arrange text and images across multiple pages. They are designed for brochures, books, reports, magazines, and other long documents. InDesign, Affinity’s layout tools, and CorelDRAW can serve this role.
  • UI and product-design tools use components, constraints, auto layout, variables, prototypes, libraries, comments, and developer handoff. Figma is strongest here; Sketch also belongs in this category.
  • Template-led marketing tools prioritize speed. Canva and Adobe Express provide templates, stock assets, brand kits, resizing, and publishing features rather than unlimited low-level control.

That distinction explains why a painter, packaging designer, social-media manager, and UX designer can all ask for the “best graphic-design software” and need completely different answers.

The best software by workflow

Adobe Photoshop: best for raster editing and compositing

Choose Photoshop when the work is primarily pixel-based: photo retouching, compositing, masking, color correction, texture, object removal, or layered campaign artwork. It remains the safest recommendation when clients, agencies, or vendors specifically expect PSD files and when the job depends on mature layer, mask, adjustment, and selection workflows.

Adobe’s current Photoshop feature set includes Generative Fill, Generative Expand, Generate Background, Harmonize, Generative Upscale, Generate Similar, and selectable AI models. Adobe describes Generative Fill as creating a generative layer, which is important because the useful question is not simply whether an editor has AI, but whether the result remains part of a workable editing structure. See Adobe’s current generative-AI feature overview.

The individual plan is listed at US$22.99 per month when billed annually. Adobe’s generative features are subject to plan-level generative-credit rules, so frequent AI use should be priced separately from the application itself.

Do not choose Photoshop as your only tool if you make logos that must scale indefinitely, multi-page publications, responsive product interfaces, or work on Linux. Photoshop can contain vector paths and text, but that does not make it a dedicated vector or layout application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best companion: Illustrator for vector artwork, InDesign for long documents, or Figma for UI and collaboration.

Adobe Illustrator: best for professional vector illustration

Illustrator is the strongest default for logos, icons, packaging, typography-led artwork, technical illustrations, vector brushes, tracing, and print assets that need precise path control. It is also a sensible choice when a client or printer expects editable AI files or when the rest of the project already lives in Creative Cloud.

Adobe highlights typography, tracing, vector illustration, AI-assisted features, Creative Cloud integration, and desktop, iPad, and web access on its Illustrator product page. The individual plan is listed at US$22.99/month, annual billed monthly on Adobe’s plans page.

Illustrator is a poor value for an occasional user who only makes simple social posts. It also does not replace Photoshop’s image-editing depth or InDesign’s long-document specialization. Its real advantage is the combination of path precision, typography, ecosystem familiarity, and client compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best companion: Photoshop for raster effects and image editing; InDesign for multi-page publication; Figma for collaborative digital product work.

Affinity by Canva: best free desktop all-in-one suite

The new Affinity is the most important current development for designers who want to leave a subscription-centered workflow. Canva announced the all-new Affinity on October 29, 2025, as one application combining photo editing, vector design, and page layout, with the core application made free. The announcement says it was available for Mac and Windows at launch, with iPad planned for later; verify the current iPad status before buying a tablet specifically for it.

This is not the same product as the older Affinity V2 applications: Affinity Designer 2, Affinity Photo 2, and Affinity Publisher 2. Articles that describe only those three paid applications may be out of date. Canva also remains a separate template and marketing platform.

Affinity is especially attractive to freelancers, students, hobbyists, small studios, and painters who need a serious local desktop workspace without Adobe’s mandatory single-app subscription. Its combined vector, pixel, and layout approach can cover a surprisingly broad range of posters, illustrations, page designs, photo composites, and brand assets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Canva says the application supports formats including PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML. That is useful, but format support is not the same as feature fidelity. A file may open while live effects, fonts, masks, symbols, meshes, variable data, or editable text change or flatten. Test a representative client file before switching a production pipeline.

Choose Affinity when: avoiding subscriptions and keeping local files matter more than Adobe ecosystem integration, cloud libraries, plug-ins, or established agency compatibility.

Do not treat it as a universal Adobe replacement until you have checked the exact Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign features your projects depend on. Canva’s own announcement establishes the product’s scope, not parity with every Adobe workflow.

Figma: best for UI, product design, and collaboration

Figma is the right first choice for websites, mobile apps, design systems, prototypes, and team-based digital product work. Its differentiators are not traditional brush or prepress tools but real-time co-editing, shared files, components, libraries, auto layout, variables, prototypes, comments, and developer handoff.

Figma’s documentation describes auto layout as responding dynamically when content changes. Its Dev Mode documentation covers inspection, code-related handoff, version comparison, annotations, and asset export. Those features make Figma much more than a drawing canvas when designers, developers, product managers, and clients must work from the same source.

The Starter plan is free. Figma’s current pricing page lists a Professional Full seat at US$16/month when billed annually, with separate Dev and Collab seat categories. Check the current pricing and plan feature matrix because collaboration, permissions, and handoff limits matter as much as the canvas.

Figma should not automatically become the primary application for complex illustration, CMYK prepress, high-end photo retouching, or long documents. It can export assets for digital delivery, but digital export is not proof of print-production reliability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Figma Draw expands its illustration capabilities with brushes, dynamic strokes, progressive blur, texture and noise effects, text on a path, and finer vector controls. It makes Figma more useful for digital-first illustration and social graphics, but it does not by itself turn Figma into an Illustrator replacement for every print workflow. See Figma’s announcement.

Best companion: Photoshop or Affinity for image editing and illustration; Illustrator for complex vector source artwork.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite: best for print, signage, and production-oriented vector work

CorelDRAW is a strong choice for signage, apparel, engraving, packaging, traditional print production, and shops whose vendors already use CDR files. It combines vector illustration, page layout, typography, and photo editing through PHOTO-PAINT, making it particularly practical for mixed production environments.

The 2026 edition adds AI Generate, AI-powered background removal, AI object selection, clip masking in PHOTO-PAINT, an updated interface, and performance improvements. Corel’s official update page identifies a July 2026 update as version 27.1. Current features are documented on the Graphics Suite product page and updates page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Corel’s licensing needs closer inspection than a single sticker price suggests. Subscription, maintenance, and one-time purchase editions do not necessarily include the same cloud features, updates, content, or AI allowances. Corel lists a 2026 one-time-purchase edition; one-time purchasers receive a one-time bundle of 2,000 AI credits, while subscribers receive 2,000 monthly credits. Use Corel’s comparison page and credit information at checkout. The supplied secondary coverage reported US$549 one time and US$269/year for subscription, but those figures should be rechecked before publication or purchase.

Choose CorelDRAW when production tooling, CDR compatibility, and ownership options outweigh the advantage of Adobe’s wider ecosystem. It is overkill for a marketer who only needs template-based social graphics.

Canva: best for beginners and high-volume branded marketing

Canva is the fastest route from a blank brief to a competent social post, presentation, flyer, email header, or campaign variation. Its strengths are templates, stock content, brand controls, resizing, collaboration, and publishing rather than microscopic path editing or prepress control.

Canva’s US pricing page lists a free plan and Canva Pro at US$144 per year for one person. The free plan includes access to Affinity, templates, stock content, 5GB of storage, and a limited AI allowance, but verify the exact plan labels, content rights, and AI limits at publication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Canva is professional enough when the deliverable is an on-brand digital asset produced quickly and repeatedly. It is a weaker primary source-artwork tool for a logo system, complex illustration, demanding typography, spot-color packaging, or a printer that requires a carefully prepared production file.

Canva states that user content is not used to train its AI by default and that an opt-in setting exists. That is a vendor policy statement, not a blanket guarantee for every plan, integration, or third-party asset. For confidential client work, read the applicable terms and team or enterprise controls.

Best companion: Illustrator, Affinity, or Photoshop for master artwork; Canva for resizing and campaign production.

Adobe Express: best lightweight Adobe companion

Adobe Express occupies the space between Canva and Creative Cloud. It is designed for quick branded graphics, social content, resizing, scheduling, lightweight video, and template-led production. Adobe lists Express Premium at US$9.99/month, including premium templates and assets, 250 monthly generative credits, one-click resize, more than 200 million Adobe Stock assets, more than 30,000 fonts, scheduling, 30-day version history, and 100GB of storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those features make Express useful for a marketing team that wants Adobe assets and brand controls without opening Photoshop for every variation. It is not Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign: it favors speed and repeatability over deep document structure, path editing, advanced masks, and print engineering. Details are available in Adobe’s pricing and Premium documentation.

Inkscape: best free and open-source vector option

Inkscape is the most obvious choice for a budget-constrained or Linux-based user who needs vector graphics. It is free and open source, runs on GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS, uses SVG as its primary format, and supports importing and exporting SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG.

The project identifies the 1.4.x line as its stable bug-fix branch and reported version 1.4.2 on May 12, 2025. Check the current release page rather than assuming an article’s version number is still current.

Inkscape can teach genuine vector fundamentals without a subscription. The compromises are usually interface polish, commercial file fidelity, plug-in ecosystems, and prepress convenience. “Opens AI” does not promise perfect preservation of live effects, fonts, meshes, symbols, or Illustrator-specific objects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GIMP: best free and open-source raster editor

GIMP is a capable choice for image manipulation, compositing, basic retouching, and Linux-based workflows where proprietary software is not an option. GIMP 3.2.4 was released on April 19, 2026, and GIMP 3 introduced non-destructive editing for many commonly used filters and improved PSD and file-format exchange.

It remains a raster editor, not an Illustrator or InDesign substitute. Before adopting it for paid production, test your color-management requirements, typography, plug-ins, PSD interchange, and export process with actual client files. The 3.2.4 release announcement and GIMP 3.0 announcement provide the relevant version context.

Krita: best free digital-painting alternative

For painters, Krita is often a better first recommendation than a general graphic-design suite. Its strengths are brushes, textured strokes, painting-oriented layer workflows, illustration, and animation. It is designed around making marks rather than assembling brand systems or preparing long documents.

Krita’s official release pages list 5.3 and 6.0 release lines in 2026, including 5.3.2.1 and 6.0.2. Verify the appropriate version and build for your operating system at the official release page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Krita is not the best choice for a logo library, multi-page brochure, UI component system, or client workflow built around AI, PSD, and Illustrator interchange. It is an excellent focused painting tool when brush control and animation matter more than a broad production ecosystem.

Adobe Fresco: best free tablet-oriented drawing option, subject to platform verification

Adobe describes Fresco as a free professional-level drawing and painting application with thousands of brushes, vector brushes, raster brushes, live brushes, animation tools, and synchronization with Photoshop or Illustrator. That makes it appealing to illustrators who sketch or paint on a supported touch device and finish elsewhere.

There is a platform caveat. Adobe’s current product page prominently emphasizes iPadOS and iOS downloads, while the current PCMag roundup also lists Windows. Confirm current Windows availability and feature parity before choosing Fresco specifically for a PC or Windows tablet. Fresco is best viewed as a focused drawing companion, not a replacement for Photoshop, Illustrator, or a page-layout application.

Adobe versus Affinity versus CorelDRAW

Concern Adobe Affinity by Canva CorelDRAW
Payment model Individual Photoshop and Illustrator plans are subscription-based; Creative Cloud Pro bundles 20-plus apps for US$69.99/month, annual billed monthly. Canva announced the new unified core application as free. Confirm current optional services and account requirements. Subscription, maintenance, and one-time purchase paths exist, with different inclusions.
Raster work Photoshop is the deepest specialist choice in this comparison. Pixel editing is built into the unified application. PHOTO-PAINT handles image editing alongside the vector and layout tools.
Vector work Illustrator has the most established specialist workflow and client acceptance. Strong value for users wanting vector, pixel, and layout in one application. Strong production-oriented vector and node-editing workflow.
Page layout InDesign is the specialist choice for long documents. Layout is part of the unified application’s stated scope. Page layout is included in Graphics Suite.
Typography and ecosystem Strongest combination of Adobe Fonts, Libraries, applications, plug-ins, and established handoff. Less ecosystem dependence can be an advantage, but validate fonts and imported documents. Well suited to CDR-centered shops; ecosystem fit depends on vendors and collaborators.
AI Photoshop offers multiple generative features, with plan-level credit rules. Canva says Affinity content is stored locally and not used to train Canva AI features; treat this as a vendor statement. 2026 adds AI features and has edition-specific credit allowances.
Best reason to switch Client compatibility and mature specialist tools. Free, broad desktop coverage without a mandatory Adobe subscription. Print, signage, production workflows, and an ownership option.
Biggest switching risk Recurring cost and ecosystem dependence. Incomplete feature fidelity when importing complex Adobe files. Edition differences and whether collaborators accept CDR or exported formats.

Adobe Creative Cloud Pro is listed at US$69.99/month, annual billed monthly, and includes 20-plus applications, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Adobe Express Premium, Firefly features, 100GB of storage, and 4,000 monthly generative credits for premium AI features. It can be good value for a designer who genuinely uses several Adobe applications, but poor value for someone who needs only one.

Affinity can replace a large portion of common vector, pixel, and layout work. It does not establish a complete replacement for Photoshop-specific AI, Illustrator-specific effects, InDesign-specific publishing, Adobe Fonts, linked Creative Cloud Libraries, plug-ins, or agency pipelines. CorelDRAW may be the better Adobe alternative when the real requirement is signage, apparel, engraving, CDR exchange, or one-time ownership.

Figma versus traditional graphic-design software

Figma wins when the deliverable is digital and collaborative: a responsive interface, design system, prototype, or developer-ready asset set. Components and libraries prevent repeated manual edits; auto layout helps designs respond to content; variables and prototypes support product behavior; Dev Mode gives developers a shared inspection and handoff context.

Traditional graphic-design applications win when the deliverable depends on sophisticated illustration, pixel retouching, color-managed print, complex typography, high-resolution painting, or long-document production. Figma Draw makes Figma more capable for digital illustration, but broader illustration support should not be confused with complete prepress or Illustrator parity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A common practical stack is Figma for interface structure and collaboration, Photoshop or Affinity for image work, and Illustrator for complex vector assets. Exporting a PNG from Figma does not solve the source-file or print requirements of a professional illustration project.

Which applications are genuinely free?

“Free” describes several different arrangements:

  • Free proprietary applications or cores: Canva’s free plan, Adobe Fresco as Adobe currently describes it, and the free core of the new Affinity announced by Canva.
  • Free tiers with paid upgrades: Figma Starter, Canva, and Adobe Express. Storage, collaboration, premium assets, publishing, or AI allowances may be restricted.
  • Free and open source: Inkscape, GIMP, and Krita. These avoid license fees but may require more manual setup, font management, plug-ins, or file checking.
  • Free only for a narrow task: browser editors and template tools can be sufficient for a social post but not for a full identity system or press-ready publication.

Before calling a tool free, ask whether it requires an account or internet connection, whether it can save and export the formats you need, whether commercial use is permitted under the relevant asset licenses, whether collaboration is limited, and whether AI features consume credits. Free does not mean zero friction, and Canva’s description of Affinity as free is a dated vendor promise rather than an independently enforceable guarantee.

What print designers should check before switching

PDF export alone does not make an application suitable for professional print. Confirm all of the following with the printer or production vendor:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • CMYK document and conversion support.
  • ICC color profiles and the profile expected by the printer.
  • Spot colors and current Pantone availability.
  • Bleed, trim marks, slug areas, and safe margins.
  • PDF/X export requirements.
  • Transparency, blending, overprint, and knockout behavior.
  • Font embedding, licensing, or outlining requirements.
  • Linked versus embedded images.
  • Effective image resolution at final size.
  • Preflight or an equivalent inspection process.
  • Whether imported PDFs remain editable rather than becoming flattened artwork.
  • Whether the exported file survives the printer’s RIP and proofing workflow.

Common failures include RGB artwork sent to a CMYK printer, missing bleed, substituted fonts, incorrect rich black, hairline strokes disappearing, transparency artifacts, unsupported spot colors, low-resolution images, and effects flattening during export. Perform a small proof or production test before moving an important client job to a new application.

File compatibility: opening a file is not the same as preserving it

Software marketing often says that an application “supports AI,” “opens PSD,” or “exports PDF.” Separate those claims into four questions:

  1. Can it open the file? The application may display the artwork.
  2. Can it edit the important objects? Text, masks, gradients, layers, symbols, and effects may not remain live.
  3. Can it export the required format? Export may flatten or rasterize elements.
  4. Can it round-trip successfully? Reopening the edited file in the originating application may reveal changed fonts, missing effects, or altered transparency.

Use real files, not a simple test logo. Include live text, masks, gradients, effects, embedded and linked images, clipping paths, transparency, and the fonts used by the client. Record what becomes uneditable. Affinity’s stated support for PSD, AI, PDF, SVG, TIFF, and IDML is encouraging, but it should be interpreted as interchange support rather than a promise of complete Adobe feature fidelity.

Adobe describes Photoshop Generative Fill as using a generative layer. Canva says content is not used to train its AI by default and provides an opt-in setting. Canva also says Affinity content is stored locally and is not used to train Canva AI features. These are vendor claims that should be checked against the current terms, plan, geography, and any third-party model involved—especially for confidential client work.

Choosing by skill level and creative goal

For a beginner making general visual content

Start with Canva or Adobe Express. They reduce the time to a competent first result through templates, guided layouts, stock assets, and resizing. They are not necessarily easier to master at a professional level because they intentionally hide much of the underlying document control.

For professional vector fundamentals

Learn Illustrator, Affinity’s vector tools, CorelDRAW, or Inkscape. Choose based on client compatibility, budget, operating system, and whether you need an open-source workflow. Learning vector concepts—paths, nodes, fills, strokes, Bézier curves, boolean operations, type, and alignment—transfers between applications.

For photo editing

Choose Photoshop for the deepest established workflow, Affinity’s pixel tools for a broad non-subscription desktop option, or GIMP for free/open-source work. Test your RAW, color, plug-in, and PSD requirements before committing.

For UI and UX

Learn Figma first unless your team has a specific Sketch or other-tool requirement. Components, auto layout, prototyping, libraries, comments, and developer handoff are more important here than traditional print features.

For digital painting

Choose Krita for a free painting-focused workflow, Adobe Fresco for supported tablet drawing and Adobe synchronization, or Photoshop when painting is part of a wider photo and compositing pipeline. A painter who primarily needs brushes should not buy a page-layout suite merely because it appears on a general graphic-design list.

For print layout

Choose InDesign, Affinity’s layout tools, or CorelDRAW depending on document length, printer requirements, client compatibility, and licensing preference. Use a printer-approved test file before production.

A practical selection decision tree

  1. Are photos, retouching, compositing, or pixel effects the main output? Start with Photoshop, Affinity’s pixel tools, or GIMP.
  2. Must the artwork scale cleanly as a logo, icon, diagram, or illustration? Start with Illustrator, Affinity’s vector tools, CorelDRAW, or Inkscape.
  3. Is the deliverable a brochure, book, report, magazine, or other multi-page document? Start with InDesign, Affinity’s layout tools, or CorelDRAW.
  4. Is it a website, app, design system, or prototype? Start with Figma.
  5. Do you need dozens of branded social or presentation variations quickly? Start with Canva or Adobe Express.
  6. Is free painting and brush control the priority? Start with Krita; consider Fresco if your supported tablet and Adobe workflow make it a better fit.
  7. Is avoiding subscriptions decisive? Compare Affinity, CorelDRAW’s one-time-purchase edition, Inkscape, GIMP, and Krita—but validate the files and features before migrating.

What a credible software test should include

The accessible 2026 roundup from PCMag, syndicated by Yahoo, provides the current tested editorial baseline: Photoshop for raster and layer editing, Affinity as the free all-in-one suite, Fresco for drawing and painting, and Illustrator for vector editing and illustration. This guide uses those selections alongside current official product documentation; it does not present an undocumented independent lab score or pretend that every product was tested in the same local environment.

A defensible hands-on comparison should disclose the test date, application version, operating system, hardware, plan or license level, internet requirements, source files, task assets, and whether exported files were inspected independently. The task suite should include:

  • Raster: open the same RAW or high-resolution TIFF; test layers, masks, adjustment layers, healing, cloning, selections, object removal, generative edits, 16-bit and CMYK handling, PSD export, and reopening.
  • Vector: build the same logo or icon set; test pen and node tools, booleans, gradients, patterns, variable-width strokes, text on a path, typography, tracing, and SVG, PDF, EPS, and AI interchange.
  • Layout and print: produce a four-page brochure; test master pages, paragraph and character styles, grids, linked text, tables, bleed, slug, preflight, CMYK conversion, PDF/X export, font embedding, transparency, and overprint.
  • UI: build a responsive mobile screen set and component library; test variants, auto layout, constraints, variables, prototypes, comments, version history, developer inspection, export, and simultaneous editing.
  • Marketing: create an Instagram post, slide, flyer, email header, and alternate aspect ratios; test templates, brand controls, resizing, assets, copy replacement, review, scheduling, and export consistency.
  • Interchange: open PSD, AI, SVG, PDF, TIFF, or IDML files where supported; modify important elements; save, reopen, and compare the result in the originating application.

The last test is often the most revealing. A replacement application can feel excellent until a client sends a complex AI file, a printer requests a specific PDF/X variant, or a collaborator needs to edit a live effect that was silently flattened.

Questions to ask before you buy or migrate

  • Can the application launch and open local files without an active subscription or service connection?
  • What happens to fonts, libraries, templates, and linked assets offline?
  • Can the team recover files if an account closes or a cloud service is unavailable?
  • Does the application support the exact PSD, AI, SVG, EPS, TIFF, PDF, or IDML features your clients use?
  • Does it preserve live text, masks, effects, transparency, and vector objects on export?
  • Does it support the printer’s color profiles, spot colors, bleed, PDF/X, and preflight requirements?
  • Are AI features available on the free plan, and how quickly do credits run out?
  • Are confidential references uploaded to a cloud model, retained, or used for training?
  • Does tablet support include pressure, external displays, large documents, offline editing, and the same features as desktop?
  • Can a client open or review the deliverable without buying the same application?

“Works on iPad” does not establish Apple Pencil support, desktop feature parity, external-display support, font management, plug-in access, offline editing, or large-document performance. Treat platform claims as a starting point and verify the exact current build.

Bottom line by reader profile

Professional image maker: Photoshop is the safest primary raster tool, with Illustrator or InDesign added when the work moves into vector or publication territory.

Professional illustrator or brand designer: Illustrator remains the strongest compatibility-first choice. Affinity is the most compelling free desktop alternative, and CorelDRAW deserves serious consideration for signage, apparel, packaging, or CDR-based production.

Freelancer rejecting subscriptions: Start with Affinity, then add Figma for collaborative digital product work and Krita, GIMP, or Inkscape when a focused open-source tool is preferable.

UI or product designer: Choose Figma. Use Photoshop, Illustrator, Affinity, or another specialist tool for assets Figma is not designed to produce.

Marketer, teacher, entrepreneur, or occasional designer: Choose Canva for the broadest template-led workflow or Express when Adobe Stock, Adobe Fonts, and Adobe’s surrounding ecosystem matter.

Digital painter: Choose Krita for a free painting-first workflow, Fresco for supported tablet drawing and Adobe synchronization, or Photoshop when painting is one part of a larger compositing practice.

Print shop or production designer: Choose the tool that matches your printer, vendor, file exchange, color workflow, and equipment—not the one with the longest feature list. CorelDRAW, Illustrator, InDesign, and Affinity can each be suitable in different production environments, but the final PDF and round-trip tests decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Photoshop still worth it in 2026?

Yes, when your work depends on advanced raster editing, compositing, retouching, PSD compatibility, or Adobe’s wider ecosystem. It is less compelling as an only application for logos, multi-page publications, UI design, or users who need to avoid subscriptions.

Can Affinity replace Adobe?

Affinity can replace a substantial amount of common vector, pixel, and layout work, and its new unified core application was announced as free. It is not automatically a complete replacement for Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign features, Adobe Fonts, Libraries, plug-ins, specialized AI tools, or agency compatibility. Test the actual files and handoff requirements in your workflow.

Is Canva professional enough for graphic design?

Canva is professional enough for many branded social posts, presentations, flyers, and marketing campaigns where speed, templates, resizing, and team production matter. It is not the best primary tool for complex logos, advanced illustration, demanding typography, or printer-specific prepress.

Is Figma good for graphic design?

Figma is excellent for UI and product design, prototypes, components, design systems, collaboration, and developer handoff. Figma Draw broadens its illustration features, but Figma is still not a universal replacement for Photoshop, Illustrator, or print-layout software.

Which application is best for logos?

Illustrator is the safest professional default for logos because of its vector precision, typography, ecosystem, and client compatibility. Affinity, CorelDRAW, and Inkscape are credible alternatives when their file exchange and production requirements fit your workflow.

Which free program is closest to Illustrator?

Inkscape is the clearest free and open-source alternative for vector work, especially on Linux. Affinity is a broader free desktop option with vector, pixel, and layout tools, but it is a proprietary product rather than open source.

Which free program is closest to Photoshop?

GIMP is the main free and open-source raster alternative. Affinity’s pixel tools offer a broader unified desktop workflow, while Krita is usually the better choice when painting and brushes—not general photo manipulation—are the priority.

Can these applications open AI and PSD files?

Several can import or export AI and PSD, but compatibility is not binary. Check whether text, masks, effects, gradients, symbols, layers, transparency, fonts, and linked assets remain editable, and perform a round-trip test in the originating application.

Which graphic-design tools work on Linux?

Inkscape and GIMP are the clearest open-source choices with official Linux support in the supplied product information. Do not assume that a Windows, macOS, browser, or iPad application has equivalent Linux support through a compatibility layer; verify the current build and feature behavior.

Do I need more than one graphic-design application?

Often. A professional stack commonly separates raster editing, vector illustration, page layout, UI design, and marketing production. For example, Illustrator plus Photoshop plus InDesign covers different Adobe specialties, while Figma plus Photoshop or Affinity is common for digital products. One application is convenient, but specialization and reliable handoff can matter more.

The Bottom Line

Choose the tool for the deliverable, not the headline. Photoshop is the strongest raster default, Illustrator the strongest compatibility-first vector choice, Affinity the most attractive free all-in-one desktop option, Figma the collaboration leader for UI, CorelDRAW a serious print and signage contender, Canva and Express the fastest marketing tools, and Krita or Fresco the better painting-focused choices. Before switching, open real client files, test the export, check print requirements, and calculate the total cost of the plan—including AI credits, storage, collaboration, and the time spent repairing incompatible files.
