macOSicons is the best place to find ready-made replacement icons for Mac apps. For applying them, Finder’s built-in Get Info workflow is the safest option. If your goal is custom folder artwork rather than a downloaded app icon, Iconic or Image2icon is a better fit. There is no reliable modern equivalent of CandyBar that installs a complete system-wide theme.

What “icon packs” mean on modern macOS

Older OS X customization tools treated icons as a single system-wide theme. Modern macOS is more restrictive and more fragmented. You may be changing an application icon, a folder, a file, an external drive, or merely the cached representation of an app in the Dock—and each has different limitations.

  • Replacement icon packs: Downloadable PNG, ICNS, or similar artwork for individual apps and folders.
  • Icon utilities: Tools that help apply or preserve custom application icons.
  • Folder creators: Apps that turn images, emoji, symbols, or templates into finished folder icons.
  • Design libraries: Asset browsers and generators that create artwork but do not necessarily modify installed apps.

That distinction matters: a design library is not automatically a Mac icon pack, and a folder generator is not a system-theme installer.

Best source for finished Mac app icons: macOSicons

macOSicons is the strongest current recommendation when you want to replace the icon of a particular Mac application. It is focused specifically on macOS application icons rather than generic symbols or interface glyphs. Its catalog showed more than 31,000 searchable icons during the research period and included recent 2026 additions.

Search for the exact application, then choose a visual style that works as part of a set. A coherent collection usually looks better than mixing unrelated one-off downloads. Check whether the asset is supplied as PNG, ICNS, or another format, and look for light, dark, clear, tinted, or Tahoe-oriented variants where available.

The catalog is an asset source, not a universal installer. Individual creators may set different terms for personal use, commercial use, redistribution, or attribution. A free download does not automatically grant permission to bundle or resell the artwork.

How to apply an icon with Finder

For most third-party apps, files, and folders, Finder is the safest starting point:

  1. Open the downloaded image in Preview and choose Edit > Copy.
  2. Select the target file, folder, or application.
  3. Choose File > Get Info.
  4. Click the small icon at the top-left of the Info window—not the large preview image.
  5. Choose Edit > Paste.

To restore the original, open Get Info again, click the small icon, and choose Edit > Cut. Apple documents this workflow in its Mac customization guide.

For supported folders, select the folder, open the Action menu, choose Customize Folder, and select a color, symbol, or emoji. This is often enough for project folders and requires no downloaded pack. Apple’s standard workflow does not provide the same customization for system-provided folders such as Applications, Library, System, and Users.

Best folder-icon creators

Iconic

Iconic is designed for making personalized folder icons from images, emoji, symbols, pictograms, and other supported artwork. Its App Store listing names formats including JPEG, PNG, WEBP, PDF, AI, PSD, and ICNS, and describes updates for newer macOS visual features. Those compatibility and feature claims come from the listing, so check the current version before buying.

Choose Iconic when you want folders that look deliberately designed. For changing one application icon, Finder is simpler.

Image2icon

Image2icon can turn images into Mac-oriented assets, including ICNS files, folder icons, external-drive styles, and designs with text or emoji. It also offers light and dark folder templates. The app is free to download, while some templates or exports may require in-app purchases.

FolderIco

FolderIco is aimed specifically at folder organization. Its Mac download page advertises custom folder icons, Tahoe-style folders, and the ability to create, import, and export icon libraries. It is a better match for someone building a reusable folder collection than for someone seeking a complete application theme.

Design libraries and generators

Pichon by Icons8

Pichon is a native Mac design-asset browser with more than one million icons, illustrations, and photos according to Icons8. It is useful for finding artwork and building a visual system, but its large library does not mean every asset is a finished, correctly prepared Mac application icon. The product and App Store listings describe free access with additional paid features or formats.

CandyIcons

CandyIcons generates original app-icon artwork with AI. It may help when no suitable existing icon is available, but generated images can vary in perspective, detail, and visual weight, making a cohesive set harder to maintain. Its pricing and usage-rights claims are vendor statements; review the current terms before commercial use.

Apple Icon Composer

Apple Icon Composer is for developers and designers creating production icons for Apple platforms and integrating them with Xcode. Apple says the current download requires macOS Tahoe 26.4 or later. It supports a layered, appearance-aware workflow, but it is not a consumer tool for changing Chrome, Slack, Finder, or a folder.

Personal customization and app development are different tasks. A developer changing an icon for a published app must create a new app version and submit it for review, as described in Apple’s App Store Connect documentation.

How to choose a pack that will age well

Apple’s current icon guidance favors centered artwork, simple forms, high-resolution source files, and appearance-aware designs. Current Mac app-icon specifications use a 1024×1024 layout and account for default, dark, clear, and tinted appearances.

  • Prefer ICNS for Mac application use and high-resolution PNG for Finder copy-and-paste.
  • Look for centered artwork that remains recognizable at Dock size.
  • Avoid tiny text, excessive fine detail, and pre-rounded corners that may look doubled.
  • Choose one visual era—such as Big Sur, Sequoia, or Tahoe—instead of mixing incompatible styles.
  • Keep the original icon and downloaded asset in a backup folder.
  • Check the individual creator’s license before sharing or using the art commercially.

A PNG is convenient, but it is not equivalent to a properly authored ICNS file or a layered Apple icon asset. The right format depends on whether you are customizing a personal file or shipping an application.

What not to use

CandyBar was historically important, but it is unsupported and should not be recommended as a modern solution. Changes to application packaging, code signing, App Store apps, and system protection make broad replacement increasingly unreliable.

Also avoid random download mirrors, unmaintained theme installers, and instructions that ask you to disable System Integrity Protection merely to change an icon. Modifying protected system components can interfere with code signing, sealed system volumes, updates, and security. For ordinary customization, leave system files alone.

Common problems

The Dock still shows the old icon

Confirm that you changed the application in the actual Applications folder, quit the app, and remove and re-add it to the Dock if necessary. Finder, Spotlight, Launchpad, and the Dock do not always refresh simultaneously. If the old image remains, logging out and back in may refresh the cache. Avoid unverified cache-reset commands because behavior can vary by macOS release.

An update restored the original icon

An update may replace the application bundle or reset its metadata. Reapply the icon and keep a backup of the asset. Utilities such as Pictogram claim to preserve custom icons after updates, but its own site says it requires macOS 11 or later and cannot change preinstalled macOS apps or App Store apps. Treat it as a limited utility, not a universal theme engine.

The icon looks blurry

Use a larger source image, avoid enlarging a small raster, and keep important content centered. Blurring can also result from poor cropping, baked-in corners, or excessive detail that disappears at small sizes.

It works for Chrome but not Safari or Finder

Third-party applications are generally more realistic targets than protected Apple applications. System apps and App Store apps may be restricted by signing, permissions, updates, or the particular utility’s exclusions. Do not treat a successful change to one third-party app as proof that the same method works everywhere.

Best pick by scenario

  • A matching icon for one Mac app: Find it on macOSicons and apply it through Finder.
  • Prettier project folders: Start with Finder’s colors, symbols, and emoji.
  • Polished custom folder artwork: Use Iconic.
  • Templates, ICNS export, or many folder formats: Use Image2icon.
  • A large professional artwork library: Use Pichon, remembering that it is a design tool.
  • A production icon for your own application: Use Apple Icon Composer with Xcode.
  • A complete old-style system theme: Modern macOS does not offer a dependable, low-risk equivalent.
