The best instant camera depends first on the print size and film format you want, then on whether you value simplicity, creative control, portability, or previewing shots before printing. For an easy everyday camera, consider the Fujifilm Instax Mini 12; for group photos, the Instax Wide 400; for selective digital-to-film prints, the Instax Mini Evo; and for manual Polaroid controls, the Polaroid I-2.
These recommendations draw on the cited outlets’ reviews and manufacturers’ product information, not firsthand testing by this publisher. Film costs fluctuate, so check current local prices and compatibility before buying.
Quick comparison
| Camera or format | Best suited to | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 | Simple everyday use | Instax Mini film; TechRadar names it best overall in its July 2026 guide, while noting bright-light overexposure and a slippery feel. |
| Fujifilm Instax Wide 400 | Groups and events | Analog Wide-format camera; TechRadar highlights group shots and weddings, but says the body is bulky. |
| Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo | Previewing before printing | Hybrid camera-printer with a rear display and image storage, according to WIRED. |
| Polaroid I-2 | Manual creative control | Polaroid’s support guide documents manual aperture and shutter control, exposure indication, and flash control. |
| Polaroid Go | Portable Polaroid prints | Uses dedicated Go film; TechRadar notes bright-sunlight limitations for the third-generation model. |
| Instax Square SQ1 or SQ40 | Square-format prints | Both appear in Fujifilm UK’s current lineup; available evidence does not establish one as better. |
Best simple everyday choice: Fujifilm Instax Mini 12
TechRadar’s guide, updated July 17, 2026, names the Instax Mini 12 its best overall instant camera. It uses Instax Mini film and is praised for ease of use and viewfinder accuracy. That is TechRadar’s review judgment, not a test performed for this article.

- Note: Film Packaging varies, Includes Two twin packs each containing 20 sheets, in retail packaging
TechRadar also notes two drawbacks: the camera can overexpose in bright light and may feel slippery to hold. Consider those trade-offs if you often shoot outdoors or want a more secure grip. Fujifilm’s current UK catalog lists the Mini 12 in its camera range.
Best for group photos: Fujifilm Instax Wide 400
The Instax Wide 400 is an analog camera that uses Instax Wide film. TechRadar recommends the format for weddings and group shots, where a wider image area gives people more room than a Mini print. Its main compromise is size: TechRadar describes the camera body as bulky.
Choose it when the larger group-friendly frame matters more than carrying a compact camera. Check current film availability and price in your region before committing to the format.
Best for previewing prints: Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo
The Mini Evo is a hybrid camera-printer rather than a purely analog camera. WIRED describes it as having a rear display and internal image storage, allowing users to review an image before deciding whether to print it. Previewing can help avoid prints you do not want, but the evidence does not establish a fixed amount of film or money saved.

- Compact and cute design. Easily twist the lens to turn on and off
- Built-in selfie mirror for easy selfies Close-up mode with parallax correction
- Features automatic exposure and flash control for bright photos that are not “washed-out”
- Prints out high-quality, 2” x 3” INSTAX MINI instant photos in approximately five seconds (Development time thereafter is approximately 90 seconds). Uses INSTAX MINI instant film, which is sold separately.

It suits people who want the option to select images before using film. If you prefer the simplicity and unpredictability of printing each exposure immediately, a basic analog camera may be a better fit.
Best for manual control: Polaroid I-2
The Polaroid I-2 is a specialist option for photographers who want manual controls rather than a simple point-and-shoot experience. Polaroid’s official support guide, updated October 5, 2026, calls it “our first analog instant camera with built-in manual controls” and documents manual aperture and shutter control, exposure indication, and flash control. That description is a manufacturer statement, not an independent comparative finding.
Polaroid’s guide lists compatibility with i-Type, 600, and SX-70 film. Confirm the exact film format and camera instructions before buying film, especially if you also own other Polaroid cameras.
Best compact Polaroid option: Polaroid Go
Polaroid’s official guide describes the Go as a travel and portability camera, and it uses its own Go film. TechRadar also includes the third-generation Go in its guide, describing it as small and simple while noting limitations in bright sunlight.

Choose it for portability, not as a substitute for a larger Polaroid print. Go film is a separate format, so check its ongoing availability and cost before choosing the camera.
Choosing a print format
Print dimensions are a useful way to compare formats. TechRadar lists the following image-area measurements in its 2026 guide:
| Film format | Image area | Consider it for |
|---|---|---|
| Instax Mini | 46 × 62 mm | Compact prints and portable cameras |
| Instax Square | 62 × 62 mm | Square compositions |
| Instax Wide | 99 × 62 mm | Groups and wider scenes |
| Polaroid i-Type / 600 | 79 × 79 mm | A larger square Polaroid image |
These are image-area dimensions, not necessarily the full outside dimensions of each print. TechRadar supplies the measurements; WIRED similarly advises choosing an Instax camera or printer based on the print size you want.
How to choose in four steps
- Choose the print size. Compare Mini, Square, Wide, and Polaroid image areas against how you plan to use or display your photos.
- Decide whether you want analog or hybrid shooting. An analog camera prints exposures directly; a hybrid such as the Mini Evo lets you review an image before printing.
- Match the controls to your experience. A simple model favors ease of use, while the Polaroid I-2 offers manual controls for photographers who want them.
- Check film compatibility and ongoing cost. Film formats are not interchangeable. Prices fluctuate, so compare current local prices and pack contents before buying a camera.
What to know about review evidence
TechRadar says its instant cameras were tested by its expert reviewers and dates its guide July 17, 2026. WIRED describes testing varied scenes, lighting, color, and tones in its 2026 guide. Those statements describe the respective outlets’ reported review processes; they do not demonstrate testing by this publisher.
