The Sept. 17, 2024 Harvest Supermoon appeared in photographs as more than a bright full Moon: Cleveland landmarks frame it in NASA Glenn’s gallery, while images from Los Angeles and New Hampshire capture people watching and the partial lunar eclipse itself. “Best” is a matter of composition and what each image reveals, not an objective ranking.
What made the Sept. 17 Moon notable
The September full Moon was both the Harvest Moon and a supermoon, and it coincided with a partial lunar eclipse. During a partial eclipse, only part of the Moon enters Earth’s darkest shadow, or umbra. NASA described the Sept. 17–18 event as the sunlit lunar nearside grazing Earth’s umbra. NASA’s eclipse explainer and Sept. 20 Astronomy Picture of the Day provide context.

NASA Glenn notes that the Moon appeared full from the evening of Sept. 16 through the morning of Sept. 19, with its brightest appearance on Sept. 17. So the date in the title marks the peak, even though the full-looking Moon was visible over several nights. NASA Glenn’s gallery and viewing notes identify the window.
Four Cleveland compositions from NASA Glenn
NASA Glenn’s gallery is the strongest place to start for a set of credited images that show different relationships between the Moon and Cleveland. Its short captions describe the photographs; they are not quotations from the photographers.

“Complex”: Moon above the Guardians of Traffic
Sara Lowthian-Hanna’s composite places the Moon above a Guardians of Traffic statue near downtown Cleveland. NASA’s image record dates the image to Sept. 17, 2024, and credits it to NASA/GRC/Sara Lowthian-Hanna. The composite makes the landmark and Moon part of one designed scene rather than simply documenting the Moon alone. NASA’s image record supplies the date and credit.
“Shy”: a Moon emerging over a hangar
Quentin Schwinn waited for the Moon to peek through clouds above a NASA Glenn hangar. A plane crossing the Moon’s face adds a fleeting second element, making this the most eventful of the gallery’s sky-and-building moments.

Jef Janis photographed the Moon above the illuminated Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in downtown Cleveland. The lit building gives the image a strong city-night setting and a clear local landmark.
“Dramatic”: contrails across the Moon
Jordan Salkin’s photograph catches wispy aircraft contrails crossing the Moon. Unlike the landmark views, its visual interest comes from marks passing directly through the lunar scene.

Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles
A Reuters Connect listing credits Mario Anzuoni with a Sept. 17 photograph of a couple taking a selfie during the event at Griffith Observatory. It brings human activity into the story: the Moon is not only a subject in the sky but also part of a shared observing night. Reuters labels the photo licensable, so check its terms and obtain permission before using it. Reuters Connect’s listing identifies the image and rights status.

Sky & Telescope: a visible measure of the eclipse
Sky & Telescope’s gallery includes an image made Sept. 17 at 7:44 p.m. PDT. The gallery reports that 8% of the Moon was in Earth’s dark shadow at mid-eclipse. That makes it a useful choice for readers looking for the eclipse itself, rather than a photograph of the bright full Moon without an obvious shadow. Sky & Telescope’s eclipse gallery gives the image time and figure.

EarthSky: three moments from New Hampshire
EarthSky identifies Patricia Evans’s three views from Seabrook, New Hampshire, as moments from the Sept. 17 partial eclipse. A sequence conveys change over time in a way a single frame cannot. EarthSky’s gallery identifies the photographer, location, and sequence.
How to choose a photo for what you want to see
- For Cleveland landmarks: start with NASA Glenn’s “Complex,” “Shy,” or “Epic” images, each of which places the Moon in a distinct local setting.
- For a fleeting moment in the sky: “Shy” includes both clouds and a plane crossing the Moon; “Dramatic” uses contrails instead.
- For people watching: the Griffith Observatory image shows a couple taking a selfie, but its Reuters listing is licensable.
- For the eclipse shadow: consult the Sky & Telescope image and EarthSky’s three-view sequence. The Cleveland photographs emphasize compositions and settings; the other galleries add clearer eclipse-focused material.
These are different kinds of photographs—composite, single-frame scenes, and a sequence—so a universal ranking would obscure what makes each one distinctive. Credits and image-use terms also differ by source; confirm permissions with the source before publication or reuse.
