Choose The Met for art across cultures and thousands of years, MoMA for modern and contemporary art, or the Guggenheim for exhibitions in a landmark architectural setting. Your best fit also depends on what is on view, where you’ll be that day, museum hours, and which admission rates apply to you.

Which museum matches your interests?

Museum Best fit Location Planning resource
The Met Fifth Avenue A broad collection spanning regions, media, and historical periods 1000 Fifth Avenue, near 82nd Street Interactive map, Bloomberg Connects guide, and artwork audio
MoMA Modern and contemporary art; its collection covers art and artists from the 1880s to today 11 West 53 Street Digital guide with map, audio, highlights, and self-guided tours
Guggenheim New York Exhibitions and collection highlights in a distinctive architectural setting 1071 Fifth Avenue, at 88th Street Digital Guide for exhibitions and selected artworks

Choose The Met for breadth

The Met is the strongest match if you want to move among art from different places and periods rather than focus on one era. Its official Museum Highlights tour covers works across 5,000 years; other tour topics include ancient Egypt, European paintings, arms and armor, Greek and Roman art, Japanese art, and fashion. The museum advertises free guided tours in nine languages. Check The Met’s visitor information.

Choose MoMA for modern and contemporary art

MoMA is the clearest choice if that is the art you came to see. The museum describes its collection as spanning the 1880s to today, and its digital guide offers audio, highlights, self-guided tours, and an interactive map. See MoMA’s visit information.

Choose the Guggenheim for art in an architectural setting

The Guggenheim pairs exhibitions and collection highlights with a building that is central to the experience. Its visitor information includes a Digital Guide for exhibitions and selected artworks. Treat the architecture as a practical reason to choose this museum if it appeals to you, not as a claim about what every visitor prefers. Check the Guggenheim’s visitor information.

What do admission, hours, and location mean for your plans?

The official pages checked on September 30, 2026, showed $30 general adult admission at each museum. Hours and prices can change; confirm the details for your date on the linked official visit pages before setting out.

Museum Regular schedule shown Admission details shown
The Met Fifth Avenue Sunday–Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Friday–Saturday, until 9 p.m.; closed Wednesday $30 general admission; pay-what-you-wish admission for New York State residents; children 12 and under free
MoMA Daily, 10:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.; Friday until 8:30 p.m. $30 general admission; children 16 and under free; New York State residents can visit free Friday from 5:30–8:30 p.m. with an advance reservation
Guggenheim New York Daily, 10:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. $30 general admission; children under 12 free; discounted admission for students, seniors, and visitors with disabilities

These are normal schedules, not guarantees for holidays or special dates. MoMA says advance online purchase is required to guarantee entry, though limited on-site tickets may be available. The Guggenheim recommends advance online reservations. The Met offers online ticketing; review its current ticketing policies before purchase. MoMA and the Guggenheim mention CityPASS options, but those references alone do not establish whether a pass saves money for your itinerary.

Fit the museum to your route

MoMA is the most centrally located of the three for a Midtown itinerary. The Met and the Guggenheim are both on Fifth Avenue on the Upper East Side, at different cross streets. Use a map to plan the day’s route rather than assuming the locations imply a particular travel time.

How should you decide for your visit?

  • You have a short visit and a specific art interest: choose the museum whose collection best fits that interest, then check the exhibitions open on your date.
  • You’re visiting with children: compare the age cutoffs. The Met lists free admission for children 12 and under, MoMA for children 16 and under, and the Guggenheim for children under 12.
  • You live in New York State: compare The Met’s pay-what-you-wish admission with MoMA’s free Friday evening program, which requires an advance reservation.
  • You’re deciding between Wednesday and Friday evening: The Met is closed Wednesday. On Friday, MoMA’s listed hours run until 8:30 p.m. and The Met’s until 9 p.m.
  • You’ll bring a bag: The Met says small backpacks must be carried or worn on the front and that large bags or luggage are not allowed. Check each museum’s latest visitor rules before leaving.

If you are considering two museums in one day, compare their locations with the time you actually have, then account for travel, entry, and how long you want to spend in each collection. The stated hours and addresses can help you plan, but they do not determine whether that schedule will suit your visit.
