Air-dry eucalyptus by hanging small, loose bundles upside down in a cool, dry, well-ventilated room. It usually takes about one to three weeks. If you want flexible leaves for wreaths or shaped arrangements, preserve the stems in a glycerin-and-water solution instead; that treatment takes about two to six weeks and usually changes the foliage to brown or another muted shade.
Choose the right preservation method
Both methods remove or replace moisture slowly so the leaves keep their shape. University of Florida IFAS Extension describes the basic principle as removing moisture gradually while preserving as much original shape and texture as possible.

Air drying needs little equipment and creates less mess. Glycerin takes longer and requires a container and solution, but it is the better choice when brittle leaves would be a problem.
How to air-dry eucalyptus
1. Prepare fresh stems
Choose healthy, undamaged eucalyptus. Strip off leaves that would be trapped inside the bundle or sit below the intended hanging point. Damaged or crowded foliage dries unevenly and is more likely to hold moisture.

2. Make a loose bundle

Hang the bundle upside down in a cool, dry, dark or low-light, well-ventilated space. Avoid a humid bathroom, a sealed cupboard or a location where condensation forms. Good airflow is your main defense against mold.

4. Check for completion
Inspect the stems after the first week and continue until the branches feel stiff and the leaves are dry. Thicker stems and heavier leaves can take longer than thin, airy sprigs. Once dry, move the eucalyptus to its display location without bending it unnecessarily.
5. Clean and store it gently
Keep finished stems away from humidity. Do not wash dusty foliage; water can reintroduce moisture and damage the leaves. Instead, use low, cool air to blow dust away. Store extra stems in a dry box with room around them rather than compressing them.

How to preserve flexible eucalyptus with glycerin
1. Select and cut the branches

3. Mix the solution
Start with one part vegetable glycerin to two parts water. Mississippi State also describes solutions of approximately 30–50% glycerin, so the exact concentration can be adjusted for the foliage and conditions.
4. Keep every cut end submerged
Pour only a few inches of solution into a container, then place the stems so every cut end remains below the surface. Keep the container at room temperature in a dark location where it will not be knocked over. Check it regularly and add solution if the level drops; exposed stem ends stop absorbing.

5. Finish and dry the treated stems
Wait until the foliage has taken up the solution uniformly. Remove the branches, rinse off any oily residue, pat them dry and let them air-dry with good circulation. The leaves commonly turn brown or another darker color. That color change is normal: glycerin’s purpose is flexibility, not preservation of the original green.

Vase stems
Place a few finished branches in a clean, dry vase for the simplest display. Use air-dried stems when you want a crisp, sculptural look; glycerin-treated stems work when you need to adjust the spread of the leaves.
Bouquets and wreaths
Combine eucalyptus with other dried foliage and secure the stems mechanically with floral wire, twine or a concealed tie. Build the shape before hanging the wreath, because dry branches can snap when repeatedly repositioned.
Garlands and wall arrangements
Use only fully dry material. Attach stems to a base or support rather than relying on wet adhesive, and keep the finished piece away from condensation, damp exterior walls and direct sources of steam.

Safety and ongoing care
- Maintain air circulation throughout drying and glycerin treatment to reduce mold risk.
- Do not use an oven or electric heater to accelerate air drying. University of Florida IFAS Extension warns that doing so can be dangerous.
- Wear gloves when handling eucalyptus branches. UC Davis advises gloves because the branches can be sticky.
- Keep preserved eucalyptus dry and out of standing water. Gentle, cool air is safer than washing for removing dust.
- Discard any branch that develops visible mold or a persistent musty smell rather than mixing it into a finished arrangement.
Practical decision guide
- Choose air drying when you want the simplest, lowest-cost process and do not mind crisp foliage.
- Choose glycerin when flexibility matters more than retaining green color and you can monitor a solution for several weeks.
- Use small batches whenever possible; loose spacing dries more evenly than a dense bunch.
- Plan the final arrangement first so you can choose stems that are long enough and preserve them in the texture your design requires.
