The best-supported answer is Alberto Giacometti’s bronze L’homme au doigt (also known as Pointing Man): Guinness World Records reports that it sold for $141,285,000 at Christie’s in New York on 11 May 2015, the highest price paid for a sculpture at auction. That is an auction record, not a verified ranking of every statue sold privately or publicly.
The auction record: Giacometti’s L’homme au doigt
Made in 1947, L’homme au doigt is a slender bronze figure, 180 cm tall, pointing with one arm extended. Guinness World Records identifies the Christie’s sale as the highest auction price for a sculpture and separately lists it as the record for a bronze statue sold at auction. The reported $141,285,000 is a historical sale result from 2015, not a current appraisal. It establishes a record within the auction category reported by Guinness; it does not establish the highest price for every sculpture transaction, including private sales.
The living-artist record: Jeff Koons’s Rabbit
For sculpture by a living artist, Guinness World Records names Jeff Koons’s 1986 stainless-steel sculpture Rabbit as the auction record-holder. Christie’s reported that it sold in New York on 15 May 2019 for $91,075,000, including buyer’s premium, and called the result “a new world auction record for a work by a living artist.” Christie’s describes the sculpture as 41 inches high. The $91,075,000 figure is the reported 2019 sale price, including the buyer’s premium. It is lower than Giacometti’s reported overall auction record, but the two records describe different categories: one is the overall sculpture auction record and the other is for a work by a living artist.
What “most expensive” means in these records

The amounts are historical nominal sale figures; they are not adjusted for inflation. A different transaction type, record category, or price basis can change what a “most expensive” claim means.

The cited records support naming Giacometti’s work as the highest-priced sculpture at auction in Guinness World Records’ category, and Koons’s Rabbit as the living-artist auction record. They do not establish a comprehensive ranking of every statue or sculpture ever sold worldwide, particularly private transactions. For a precise answer, keep the auction qualifier, record category, sale date, and premium basis attached to the figure.
